Whllo there Is no new font tire In the
freight rtu situation , the tension between
the conflicting lines la becoming so high
that there may bo annthor break before
long1. The Western Trunk Line committee
ban taken up tbu Biihjcct and the repre
sentatives of flvo wcBtcrn road * , with Chair-
mnn Pnrkcr , will meet with the eastern line
reprcnontatlvcw of the water and mil routes
nt New York on July C. A supreme effort
will be made at that time to bring about an
understanding between the warring elements
and If It falls there will follow a further
reduction.
It la agreed among the cast and west
lines that no further notion toward meeting
the rate of the southern lines will be taken
until after this conference has been held.
Uill notwithstanding this agreement there
IB a suspicion on the part of many of them
that others arc quietly meeting the new
rate made from the gulf. It Is not be
lieved that any road In Omaha has quoted
these figures , but they arc all constantly
vigilant In their effort to detect a break In
llio agreement. Conferences between some
of thi ) frnlght representatives of the roads
arc held almost dally.

O Minim People ScM'UliiK I'litcrx lit
Which to Sprint the Hummer.
There Is n , Wg exodus of Omaha people
who arc seeking a cooler spot In which to
spend a portion of the summer. Railroad
men say It has been several year * since the
travel out of Ouiuha has been so heavy as
at present. People are going everywhere
and there are sections of the city which are
being almost depicted of population as a
result of this movement.
In explaining the situation one railroad
man said that last year nearly everybody In
Omaha remained nt home on account of the
exposition , expecting to entertain friends
from outside of town , and that previous to
innf vnni * fhn nffm a nf thn nnnln kent manv
at homo. Now It Is said that times are
bolter and as the good people of the city
do not desire to spend two consecutive years
entertaining friends they have decided to
epend n part of the present summer in being
entertained toy others.
In canvassing the trains leaving the city
ono will find Omaha people bound for Wis
consin , for the lakes In Minnesota , for Hot
Springs , S. D. , for Colorado points and for
Interior places to visit relatives , while a
few are going to California ,
It Is predicted that the Fourth of July
business this year will be the largest on
record In .this vicinity. Already the trans
portation departments of the several roads
are finding themselves overtaxed to meet
the demand for cars. Low rates of course
have much to do with this extraordinary
travel , as It has been many years since
there wcro so many rates In effect for travel
In so many different directions.

the New York Central & Hudson Illvcr Rail
road company will meet tomorrow to formu
late a proposition to the Boston & Albany
stockholders looking to a lease of that rall-
loail for u long term of years. Ttie propo
sition to bo drawn. up tomorrow embraces
only overtures to the Boston & Albany and
nothing will bo done nt this meeting about
drafting propositions to other lines which
arc reported likely to bo absorbed by the
New York Central. The plan for the ab-
norptlon of the Chicago & Northwestern , the
Union Pacific and the Oregon Short Line are
maturing rapidly. It Is said , and may come
to a focus almost any time. The Big Tour
and the Chesapeake & Ohio are said to be
Included In the scheme of consolidation and
In due tlm and under proper conditions
will merge Into the New York Central.

On and after next Saturday ticket agents
In the west will not receive BO large com
missions upon their snips as they have been
receiving during the Inst two months. Up
until May 1 the rate of commissions , taking
n few cases as samples , were 75 cents on
tickets from Chlcaso to Omaha or Denver
and $1.BO on tickets from Missouri rivpr
points to the Pacific const and to the north
western states gpnerally , with $3 for the
round trip. Owing to the unsettled condi
tion which came upon the pnffiensor huslnt-sa
thrniiRh the threatened disruption of the
Western PasseiiRer association , these com
missions were advanced until It was dilll-
cull to tell just what the schedule really
waf. Since the reorganization of the asso
ciation , however , the commissions are to be
eliminated and the old schedule will again
go into effect , dating from July 1.

Health Commissioner Spaldlng has deter
mined that some of Omaha's physicians ,
who habitually violate the law In regard
to reports of births nnd deaths , shall be
made to suffer for their negligence until a
radical reform has set In. Reports of
deaths come to his office dally which either
give no cause of death or some vague state-
j mcnt not really an explanation of the death
| at nil. Prominent physicians send In "In
flammation" or "shock" as n cause of death ,
and expect the health department to Issue
a burial permit on the strength of that
statement. Recently n report came In which
gnvc no other clue to the cnuio of the death
than the fact that two physicians had at
tended the deceased , which almost led the
health commissioner to a determination that
all blanks after the word "cause" In the
report should be filled In with the name
of the attending physician.
Other physicians neglect to report a
death until long after It has occurred ,
whereas the law specifically provides that
the report shall bo mndo within twenty-
four hours after death , and Imposes a pen
alty for delay. Recently n physician re
ported n death resulting from morphine
poisoning to which the coroner's attention
had not been called , or at least the report
did not show that It had. The regulations
provide that In case no physician certifies
to a death from natural causes the signa
ture of the coroner must bo affixed to the
report , ns un evidence that there ore no
suspicious circumstances attending the
death.
It has also come to the notice o'f the
officials that burials are sometimes mndo
before the report of the death Is In. In
every such case the sexton of Home ceme
tery hns violated the law In allowing a
burial to bo made without receiving the
permit of the Board of Health allowing
It. It has been decided that the next time
such a thing occurs nn example will be
made of the offending sexton.
The general character of the reports ,
their lack of promptness , their Incomplete
ness , Illegible handwriting nnd Inaccuracy ,
have 'been ' the cause of great dissatisfaction
ever slnro the-system was Inaugurated.

It Is scarcely possible that Dr. Pcrln

A Mliliviiy Interview.
"It's a good Idea , sure enough , remarked
ono of the young men superintending the
arrangement of the Artists' Studio on the
Midway. "I mean the scheme of an exhi
bition of a practical studio , as it Is In life
and not In novels , and to show to the
public the actual1 work of picture making.
I am satisfied that we are In an enter
prise that will Interest the public , for in
every city , American nnd European , invi
tations to Studio affairs always are quickly
accepted. "
The artist went on to explain something
of his plans. The studios are to be furnished
characteristically and beautifully with draw ,
ings , paintings , oriental rugs and brlc-a-
brac that Mr. Sherman and Mr. Klnney
have plundered from their own establish
ments In Chicago. The models , who have
been carefully selected , will be posed to
represent the figures In famous paintings.
The public will then have the opportunity
of seeing the artists at their actual work
of reproducing upon canvas the beauties
of form and color before them. From
sketches of the stage as It Is to be , it is
evident that the entire scene will be a
tableau of wonderful beauty. Among the
masterpieces of painting that will be pro
duced are several religious pieces , including
Munkacsy's "Beheading of John , the Bap
tist , " and Scheffer'H "Temptation of
Christ. "

DOGS ASSUME NEW DIGNITY
Mnj > ot HP I ncrrrmnnlntiftly Dumped
Into the Itlvrr or .Hliot
After Mntnriln ) .
Owners of docs are wondering Just what
effect the new law making dogs personal
property , which goes Into effect July 1 , will
have on the city ordinance * requiring dogs
tu be tagged and authorizing the city dog
catcher ! ) to take them Up and Impound them
for redemption. When the dogs become per
sonal property It will not bo lawful for ths
police to kill them , although there frcms
to be no reason why the dogs may not betaken
taken up and impounded Just as stray cow *
or horses are. The probability Is that the
canlnen will be rounded up as usual and
that their owners will have to redeem them
by paying the tax nnd putting the tags on
them as n sign that the tax has been paid.
The city poumlmaster , however , will have
his kennels overllowlng with dogs If he haste
to hold every one taken up until the owner
appears to claim It. Such , It In understood ,
will bo the effect of the now law , If It has
any effect at all ,
The number of dogs on which the tax has
bpen paid and for which tags have been
Issued ha * just paused the number for last
year. Up to Wednesday evening 2,810 tags
had been Issued , two more than last year's
number. It Is expected that the now law
will decrease the number Issued during the
rest of the season somewhat , as the owners
of dogs may not have to put tngs on them
In advance to prevent their ibclng killed by
the police.
