CHICAGO , June 29.-Hcavy additions to
Blocks In the northwest were a pliase of the
Ituatlon In wheat today that caused U to
woaksn after a considerable show of
trength. September closed at a decline of
% c , compared with yesterday. Everything
else on the Moor was heavy , corn declining
WiiVtC , oats closing a shade lower and proVisions -
Visions 2'/4f(5c ' ( lower.
Weakness characterized the opening In
wheat. Weather was favorabU for the har
vesting of winter wheat and the growth of
cprlng. Liverpool cables were somewhat
disappointing , showing slight declines In
dome futures and northwest receipts , though
tihowlng some falling off , were still too
heavy to permit of any bullishness from
( that source. There was in addition an In-
J cllnatlon to even up on trades over the holl-
; dnyft and these factors ruled the market
lor the llrsl half hour. September opened
nt "I'.lc ' , compared with yesterday's closing
price of 74',4c. ' u goon declined to "IHc , then
gradually turned strong and , thuoghmany \
minor fluctuations occurred , the tendency
in the main was toward higher prices until
late In the afternoon. Reports from the
northwest were for from satisfactory con-
c'ornlnKgrowing wheat. Many complaints
of damnKD were received , principally from
.rust , while from the winter wheat country
reports of harvesting operations were dla-
nppolnllng In some cases. The northwest
markets showed strength even when this
mnrket was declining and , as this was re
garded as evidence of the truth of the dam-
ige reports , It had a strengthening eft ct on
the local mnrketr Russian news became
somewhat of a factor again. Private ad
vices from Russia declared that country
would not produce over half n crop and a
noticeable increase In the buying occurred
when this became known. Minneapolis and
DtllutU receipts were 511 cars , against 53o
last week and 713 a year ago. Chicago re
ceipts were 122 cars , 11 of contract quality.
Total primary receipts were 792,000 bu. , com
pared with W,000 ) bu. last year. Atlantic
port clearunots were large , 791,000 lui. , but
Now York reported only ten loads taken for
export -odny. St. Louis reported that new
wheat arriving was of the best grade In a
number of years. There was considerable
covering by shorts during the session ana In
tbo absence ot selling ot Importance the
September price gradually moved up to
74ft7474c. Shortly after noon the market
turned weak. Minneapolis stocks ot wheat

NEW YORK , June 29. The stock markets
showed the effect of continued prollt taking
today. It was considered a foregone con
clusion that this should prove to bo the
case and most of the traders came to the
board .room this morning bearish In senti
ment. The approach of n triple holiday ,
coupled with tne week's sharp advance in
prices , was considered sulllclcnt reason fern
n reaction. The lively buying after the
opening for London account seemed for a
time to refute the. position of the bears , but
later In the day when this demand has been
satisfied and an announcement was made of
a $2CK ,000 gold shipment to go on Saturday
In splto of the low price for sterling exchange -
change the bears gained renewed .confidence
and the market sagged away without much
Interruption untl1. the last. There is a con
tradiction dlfllcult to explain in the facts
that the needs of the London money mar
ket nre responsible for the drain of gold
from New York , with Us deleterious effect
on stock values In this market , while the
buying for London account , In spite of the
money stringency there , was about the
only factor of strength In the New York
market.
'iiie statement of the Bank of England
shows that the bank has succeeded In In-

Its lonn of over $26,000,000. The proportion
of reserve to liability Is thus reduced from
42.44 to 33.C9 pec cent , a very striking change
In view of the widely expressed uneasiness
In England over the present low stngo of
the bank's gold reserve. The fall In British
consols of 5-1G was due to cash sales , prob
ably connected with the state ot the bank's
reserve. That the return did not hnvo u
greater effect on the Lonaon stock market
was probably due to the reassuring opinion
ot the British chancellor of the exchequer
expressed last night on the subject of the
reserve of the Bank of England.
The locnl stock market , owing to the mis-

CATTLE The fnt cattle market was good
again today and entirely to the liking of
Fellers. The movement was active and
values steady to strong. Bueyrs wanted
the cattle and were out early so that an
early clean ce was effected. Th quality
of the cattiu was generally pretty good ,
which also helped the market. By 10 o clock
the cattle were practically all sold and
weighed up.
Cows and heifers were In light supply and
the market at least firm on everything de
sirable. The offerings for the moat part
changed hands very soon after the opening
of the market. Good bulls , both stock and
fat , were good sellers at steady prices. In
some cases holders of thin or canning bulls
did not thing the market was quite jio
strong as it has been. Veal calves were
scarce and some fairish veals brought $ i.OO.
No new developments wer > reported from
the stocker or feeder division. The few
cattle of that description In the yards sold
! n about the sama notches that they have
all the week. Representative sales :

HOGS Values were a shade higher tills
morninff In splto cf thu fact that th re
ceipt.- , were again liberal rind that Chicago
did not report any nure than a steady mar
ket. Demand on the part of local packers
was very qood and the movement active at
the prevailing prices , so that practically
everything changed hands In good season.
Thu long string of mixed hess went at
$3.07' , $ , as against $3.05 yesterday. ( Some
choler light sold up to ? 1.72Mi and some
rough nnd heavy loads brought only $3.03.
The maiket as a whole was entirely eatls-
factory to the sellers.
The market has been higher every day
this w-ek , as will be noted from the tablu
of average prices ut head of column. On
Monday the average price paid for all the
hogs was only J3.03 , so that the murket today -
day was lust about 5o higher. On Thurs
day of last week the average was only
Ji.tS. With the exception of Tuesday and
Wednesday of lafct week the hogs today
sold at the high point of thu month. An
other thing tnat will Iv.- noted from the
tablu of average prices Is that the hogs are
now elllng just about where they were a
year ago , thougli the averagu for the whoU
month has been lower this year. Repre
