NBW YORK , Juno 19.-Speculatlon In
stocks" has evidently reached a sort of
cquatorlnl tone nnd Is hopelessly becalmed
In the doldrums , with not enough headwny
to Indicate In which direction Its course
shall bo fin illy shaped. Denllngs todny con
tinued profoundly dull nnd outside of move
ments of a few special stocks which were
Influenced by Individual causes the dny a
events were Inconsequential As Is only
natural In a market where the bujlng de
mand Is practically nil. HIP drift of prices
was downward , even with a very small
body of offerings to weigh on the market
There was In addition the sympathetic ef
fect of an active liquidation , coupled with
bear pressure In Steel and Wire The net
rcnults for the day are losses In almost
all ca es nnd In quite a number of cases
amount to as much as n point or over
Steel nnd Wire showed Its weakness from
the opening and dropped by successive
singes without any determined support be
ing manifest tt a level nearly $1 per share
below the price of Saturday. The confu
sion nnd uncertainty as to the declaration
of n dividend nt the coming meeting , duo
to the contllctlng utterances of those con
nected with the property , showing the ex
istence of a dispute among the directors
themse ves , nre responsible for this wenk-
ness. He.'vy lines of this stock were tikfn
on by operators on the confident assump
tion thnt n dividend was to be declared
Federal Steel nnd other stocks of com
panies In the steel trade dropped In sym
pathy. A buying demand for Tennessee
Coal , which spread to Colorado Fuel , hnd a
large inllucnce In checking the decline In
the whole group nnd affecting a partial
re-coverv , except In Federal Steel , which
sold at the lowest on the last sale at a net
decline of over 2 points. The temporary
strength dlsp'.ajed by Sugar nlso served as
a sustaining Influence. The early drop In
the wheat market Htlffened the grangers for
nwhlle , but they yielded ngaln. The pre
vailing depression on foreign exchanges
was an Influence and the bears sold trac
tion stocks on the theory that western
street railway strikes might spread.
The Baltimore & Ohio stocks were rather
conspicuously weak , with no further ex
planation apparent than the decrease In
net earnings compared with last jeir. It Is
evident that the public and operators In
stocks are waiting for the future course of

Cotton Market.
NEW YORK , Juno 19 On light Liverpool
buying the cotton market opened steady .n
tone , with prices unchanged to 1 point
lower. As the session progressed trading
narrowed down" to opera'tlonsi ' of scalpers
and an effort ofotlio prominent Wall street
houses to dispose of July headings for reInvestment -
Investment in January. At no time during
the day could speculation have been called
active , nor did the course of values glvo
the least Idea as to the tendency of senti
ment generally. It was what brokers term
"a 1-polnt market. "
Initial English cables reported well sus
tained prices for spot cotton at Liverpool ,
but less activity than expected and a
nerveless sagging future department. The
reverse was cab efl from Manchester , trade
being reported as heavy at strong prices
Domestic news hold out no Inducement of
account to possible investors , Indicating
little If any change In tnc situation as n
whole. With the weather south favorable
the crop was said to be doing famously ,
though a superabundance of rain came to

CATTLK The week opened with liberal
receipts of cattle , c ese to 100 cars of corn-
fed steers being among the offerings.
Quito a good many of tnese cattle were
shipped In In anticipation of a large export
demand , which did not nmterlalire. This
of Itself would have , been against the mar
ket , but In addition Chicago came way
lower and the result was a sharp break in
values nt this point. As a general thing
the market wan lOc lower and very slow at
the decline , In spots It was 15c lower. On
an average heavy cattle were the worst
sufferers , but at the same time there were
sales of light cattle which showed fu.ly as
much decline as heavy. The market as a
whole was a drag- from start to finish and
was very far from satisfactory to sellers ,
who were unwilling to make the concession
demanded. As a result the morning passed
with very little being done and It was late
before anything like a clearance was
eflected.
Cows and heifers were in light supply and
the maiket did not show any material
change as compared with the close of last
week. Buyers seemed to want supplies and
offerings were practically all taken In good
season. Bulls also sold at just about steady
prices , but It Is the time of year when It
would be only natural to expect heavy bulls
to sell a little lower , most any time ,
especially If the extremely hot weather of
the last two days continues.
There were a few Block cattle in the
yards , but speculators were not very
enthusiastic nnd the market was not very
acthe As to values they are not quite so
strong as they were the middle of last
week. Representative sales :

American GIn Compnny Secklnp ; Kx

the present officers have secured options o
fully 80 per cent of the window glass fac
torles of the country and will form a trus
along modern lines , with a capital of $24 ,

The notice , containing , as It does , a velloa
threat to all Jdhbers and manufacturing con

Whllo the combination allowed the dis

during the last year n fair margin of profit ,
there Is no guarantee that It will do the
same this ypnr. In fact , with the Jobbers'
capital In its own coffers , there Is no reason
why thu cumulnntlon should consult any
body except Itself In this llttlo mntfpr , nnd
IhH Is one of the points over which the
