NEW YORK , Juno 16-There was n small
number of stocks whose prices were
marked up at thn opening today nnd for
which a buying demand fxlsted at Intervals
during the day. The coalers were conspicu
ous , especially the Heading Issues , and they
rose on an average of about l',4 points.
Mho Flower groui > also moved upward and
Ravi some semblance of strength to t"io
general market. Aside from this dcni.iml
the market was almost wholly n ; lc'ed
nnd In the hands of a smiill coterie u.f p'ro-
fess'.onal traders. The utmost endeavors of
these operators did not serv. to move
C rices more than a small fraction , except
l a few Isolated cases. Tne advance In
the coalers wtis pretty well held. It was
attributed to the return from Europe of a
prominent financier , who has tlgur"d In
many railroad reorganization * nnd to the
closing out of options on Lehish Valley by
sympathetic control. Some of these rail-
rouds displayed a rnther llrm tone In
sympathy with Rending , but the movement
of prices In them was Inconsequential. The
advance In the Flower stocks was not so

CATTLE-Most all the cattle reported In
today were cornfed steers , there being
fifty or more loads of that kind on sale.
The market , In spite of the very moderate
offerings for two days , was very slow and
draecy , so that the forenoon was well ad
vanced before a clearance was effected.
Huyers acted very Indifferent and It did not
look much as If they cared whether they
got any cattle or not. Such cattle as were
of handy weights and pleased them sold
In the. end at Just about steady prices , but
in spots the market was a little lower.
If the cattle happened to be aittlc rough I
or not Just the right weights there was a i
strong Inclination to neglect them. i
Only a very few cows and heifers were
on sale and the market on that kind of I
cattle was without change of any Im- I
portnnce. Bulls , stacs , calves , etc. , sold
at about the same o'.d prices. Good calves
brought $7.00 , the same aa they have been
doing for some days back.
No fresh receipts of stock cattle of any
consequence were reported. The cattle that
came In yesterday and the- day before were
many of them still In the hands of
speculators , the country demand not prov
ing very active. . The feeling among buy
ers was weak , and from the feeling among
speculators It would be safe to say that
had there been any fresh receipts they
would have had to soil lower. Ke-present-

HOGS Values were a shade lower UIH !
morning under the Inlluenco of u lower
market at Chicago and liberal receipts.
The demand was good at preval.ing prices ,
and. though the market was a little slow to
open , It was fairly active when the trading
was OIICP under way. U was not long until
the big bulk of all the hogs hud changed
hands , and the feeling nt the close , If any
thing , was a little bettor than at the open
ing. Considering the liberal receipts tills
week the market yesterday and today was
In vtry fair condition.
The hogs sold today at $3.6033.621.4
principally , with a sprinkling at J.3.65.
Yesterday over liu'f of all the hogs sold at
} 302 , and the balance principally at $3.65.
The Tlecllno today was hardly 2ic ! , ns the
proportion of sales at $3.60 today was not
BO largo as at $3.62' < . yesterday.
It will be obsprved from the table of
average prices that the mnvket is now at
thn low point of the week since Monday ,
but that U is still 5c higher than the Ilr.st
