I.nnnrx I'lilly llrcovprvil ,
NEW YORK , June 2.-The bears suffered
n , complete rout on the Stock exchange to
day and rushed to cover oulstandlng ac
counts , wllh symptoms of distress. Prices
were marked up In the laft half hour of the
trading In a way which showed plainly the
eagerness of Iho shorts to close out th lr
contracts , so that they were bidding prices
up on themselves In many cases , No more
complete reversal of speculative sentiment
could be Imagined and the week's earlier
losses were wiped out In all but n few
cases nnd the general level of prices brought
back to about those of last Saumlay. i
The bears did not yield the Held without a
struggle , the opening of the market showIng -
Ing declines In a number of stocks which
have been favorite targets for the bears In
the recent markel. Sugar was raided down
n point and Rrooklyn Transit , Manhattan
nnd n number of the steel slocks were un
der pressure , while the opening gain In Met
ropolitan Street Railway was almost wiped
out. Hut the strength In the railroad list ,
especially In the International stock ? , In
sympathy wllh the earlier rise In London
nnd on buying for London account checked
the earlier efforts to force a decline. Metro
politan Street Hallway , Sugar and Hrook-
lyn Transit nil developed quite a buoyant
tendency nnd the bears drew off their forces
and awaited , developments , By the time the
buying for London account had been cx-
cculed the market became dull nnd the
bears returned to the attack. They produced - '
duced some Impression on the tobacco
stocks , American Mailing preferred , Rubber ,
Minneapolis & St , Paul nnd St. Paul &
Sault Stc. Marie , but almost no effect on
the general list.
A 2-polnt decline nflcr midday In Sugar
was the only subsequent evidence of any
weak point In the market nnd the stubborn
resistance of prices Induced the bears to
abandon their campaign nnd to rush prices
tip In the final hour In their pnnlc-slrlckcn
efforts to cover. Net gains throughout the
list ranged from 1 to over 4 points nnd nro
over 2 points for ihc mnjorily of ncllvo
slocks. The announcement made af ler bus
iness hours yesierday of the engagement
of $1,000,000 gold for export came ns u sur
prise nnd was grceled hopefully by the
bears. Uut the operations served to relieve
the London market nnd thus awaken a buyIng -
Ing movement In the stock market there
which spread to the American section and
was reflected back upon the New York ex
change. The renewed strength In wheat
was equally Ineffective Jn depressing prices .
of stock ? , as the reported failure of Rus
sian crops was expected to bring out largo
reserves of American whent. In the out-
sldo market there was n very strong recovery - ,
covery In the stock of the Amalgamated '
Copper company , which touched 93. This ,
was accepted as a resumption of aggressive '
supporting tactics by the powerful Inter
ests behind that combination. Good reports
In the nnthrnclte trade and the expectation
of a favorable hank statement by reason
of contraction of loans nil contributed to
upturn In prices.
There were yielding points In the bond
list , but prices of many Issues turned up
ward. Total sale ? , par value , $2,000.000 ;
United States. 4s , registered , advanced U
nnd United' ' States 4s , coupon , % In the bid
price.
The Commercial Advertiser's London
financial cablegram says : The markets hero
were Idle today except In mines. The tone
was weak , but It hardened finally. Amer
icans were dull nnd Inactive until after
noon , when New York-bought steadily and
the close was at the best. There was no
speculation In them here. Coppers opened
flat , but recovered. Paris sold tlntos per
sistently , but London bears closed , causing
a rally from 46 to 47W. Anacondas fravo
been 10 % and closed at 111-16 on New York
purchases ; Utahs were 7i , Bostons 2 ; Span
ish 4s were es geo'/i. Money Is almost un-
lendable. but the bank Is expected to check
any further fall In rates , silver was weaken
on local cash sales. The Japanese loan Is
out and 2,000,000 has been subscribed by
Japan. Only 8.000,000 Is offered. Dealings
In the subscriptions opened nt a small dis
count and closed at a small premium. Ja
pan announces that it will refrain as far
ns possible from disturbing the London
money market.

CATTLE With the coolers full of beef
and a good liberal run of cattle In sight the
packers seemed to feel themselves In a posi
tion where they could afford to take the
bear sldo good and strong. Some of the
buyers remarked privately this morning
before they went out Into the yards that
they would buy thrir cattle lOc lower or
leave them. They nad not been In the
yards long before their bids showed that
they meant what they said. SMlcrs , how
ever , were not of the same mind , and the
result was that it was after 10 o'clock be
fore any business tosp - ak of was trans
acted. Buyers did not In all cases succeed
in getting tne cattle as low as their first
bids , but they bought them as a rule S lOc
lower than ysterrtrfy , or 20c lower than the
high day , which was Tuesday , in some cases
possibly 25c lower.
The market on butchers' stock was equally
slow and dull , and It was very lat ? before
anything of any importance was done.
Prices paid were generally nil of lOc lower
than Tuesday , and In many cases as much
ns 20c lower. Bulls. If good , sold pretty
wll , ibut the general market was lower In
sympathy with the decline on other kinds.
Veal calves sold the same as yesterday ,
the best bringing $7.00.
'Stockers ' and feeders were In such light
supply that there w re not enoug-n here to
talk about , and that kind of cattle did not
cut any figure In the day's transactions.

HOGS The mark t on hogs today was
active at an advance of 5if/10c. / The demand
was good and l < ical packers went after the
hogs , and It did not take them very long
to clear the ponx. Th ? prices paid ranged
mostly from J3.55 to $3. 5 , with the long
string nt J3.57U. Yesterday almost every
thing sold at J3.50. with the top only $3.53.
They put back what they took off yester
day , so that the hoes sold In about the
sam ; notches ns on Wednesday.
Today's advance was largely duo to the
fact that It was learned by packers yester
day that the monthly report would show a
largo fulling off In the storks of provisions
lit Chicago ns compared with a month ago ,
and also that the total stocks would l > -
shown to bo considerably below expecta-
Today's advance puts the market a little
ahead of what It was a week ago , and
IPOVOS It only A ah.id" below what It van
< ho first of the week. Representative nalesi

SHEEP .Some fourteen cars wsro re
ported In the yards this morning , but four
cars wore from Kansas City , consigned
direct to a packer. Three cars were Colorado
rado lambs , sold to arrive , nnd nt private
terma. That left only a few spring lambs ,
some of them small and undiilrnble , and a
few sheep , none of whlohvero good. The
result was a slow market. There appeared
to b ? a good demand for good muttons , but
the common to fair stuff Is almost unsala
ble , ns no one seems to want it. The ar
rival at other points of southwestern grass
sheep has forced the market down on all
kinds , and quotations arc lower than they
were a few -lays ago.
