the outset. Apparently there had been a
quiet picking up of stocks for the Ions nc-
count in the recent depression and the hold
ers were n ? willing to take profits. If they
could get them , ns the shorts. They pro
ceeded , therefore , to bid up the market and
Induced quite nn active covering movement
for both accounts. The decision of the
Stock exchange to keep closed over ft double
holiday from the coming Saturday until
Wedmsdny was n. motive for closing up ac
counts bom lone nnd short.
The market hesitated only momentarily
nt the opening1 , nt which tlmo low prices
for the day were made In nearly nil cases
and then moved quite strong.y nnd conll-
dently upward. There were occasional
pauses and setbacks nnd some Irrecularlty
und a realizing movement In the Into dealIngs -
Ings brought prices generally below the
high level , but very substnntlul net gains
remained In nearly all coses. H hns been
obvious for .several days that the short In
terest wns becoming rather unwieldy nnd
a premeditated attempt wns arranged to
take the market nwny from the shorts pre
vious to the. coming holiday. Some ot the
fnoto a which assisted the bul'.s were the
excellent reports of railway earnings for
the third week In Mny , which continued to
bo received this morning. This was es
pecially true of the southwestern roads ,
of whl-h the shorts were rnther free sellers
yesterday.
The rather buoyant tendency of the wheat
market on continued crop scare was there
fore Innorcd and the grangers nnd South-
westcrns were quite freely bought. Reports
were circulated with the appearance of au
thenticity that the dividend disbursements
for the current period on the Atchlson pre
ferred stock had been practically decided
ux > n. The shorts who had sold on doubts
of this were therefore driven to cover. The
passage of the modified Ford franchise bill ,
amollor.Ulnir the. . conditions Imposed upon
New York municipal corporations , lifted
that group of stocks quite markedly. Lon
don was a buyer of stocks to ft moderate
extnnt and this was nn Influence In the
easier tone of sterling exchange , which re
lieved some slight apprehension of possible
gold exports. Sugar and the coalers were
easily manipulated for n rise by the bulls
nnd there were evidences of strength In
Southern Paclflc nnd Central Pacific. These
conditions were too much for the equan-
Imltr of .the . bears and they Joined In the
buylnir movement , with results as nbovo
Indicated. Pressed Steel Car was the most
conspicuous exception to the. prevailing
Rtrcncth. *
There was a continued large demand
for ull available classes of bonds , govern
ment Included , nnd prices are higher nil
around. Total sales , par value , $4,643,000 ;
United States 3s , coupon , nnd the new 4s
advanced < i and the 5s V In the bid price.
The Commercial Advertiser's London
financial cablegram nays : This was the
auletest day of the. week In the markets
here. Stocks opened weak , but became
harder later , Americans were stagnant ,
but remained slightly above parity through
out ; Spanish 4s rallied to 63 on strong-
Paris support ; tlntos were 49049 % ; Anacon
das , 12 % ; Utahs , 8 % ; Boston. ? , 2'g. Berlin
still buys Canadian Pacific. Money waa
harder , expecting tightness at the end of
the month. .The bonk return was disap
pointing owing to the outflow of gold and
the reduction of the market deposits. The
Bank of Bengal 'has reduced Its discount
rate from 6 to 5.

CATTLE Other markets all reported a
considerable break In values on beef cattle
and as there were about eighty loads of
cornfcd steers in the yards at this point it
wns only natural to expect a mean market.
However , the very KOOU local demnnd saved
th.- day nnd the market , instead of being
menu , wns very good in comparison wltn
the way cattle are selling at othar points.
Duyers generally started out bidding lower
prices and in some cases they bought the
cattle at a llttl ; easier prices , but on the
other hand a good many cattle sold at
; ndy prices. The market could best be
scribed as steady to So lower. The trade
wns active after tlio market had once
opened nnd everything wns sold at an early
hour.
Cows and heifers were in active demand
nnd p > lc < s on that kind of cattle did not
materially differ from yisterday. Bulls
brought good strong prices and the demand
was sufficient to clean up everything of that
description In a very short tlmo. Veal
calves were steady.
Stockers and feeders were In light supply ,
as , wns the case yesterday , and the market
did not show much change , at least no
quotable change. Some little stuff sola at
$5.25 , which wns steady , or possibly a little
stronger. On the other hand , stock heifers
nnd cows sold at prices that In some cases
loked lower. Representative sales :
