NEW YORK , Mny 21-Prlccs of Blocks
drifted to a lowSr level -today In the uncer
tain nnd Irregular manner which Is chnr-
ictcrlstlc of a dull nnd undecided market.
The dullness of the market Is entirely nor
mal for this lime of the year , when the
fate of the coming crops , on which so much
depends , la still In the balance. In present
conditions , however , the market has several
unfavorable factors to contend with. In
the first place there Is evidently hanging
over It some of the largo homings that
wore taken 'on for the purpos * of averting
* panic nnd which are offered for realiz
ing purposes at n certain point In any ad
vance. In today's market also It was rather
obvious that some of the newly Honied In
dustrials were not having an easy time.
This was especially true of the various
companies which were to have been aggre
gated In the projected great stotl nomhln.i-
tlon , the plan for which seenvs to nave. hcn
materially altered. American Hoop , Tinplate -
plate , Steel and Wire and National Stfel
were all quite acutely affected and the late
dealings In Federal Steel and Colorado Fuel
nlso succumbed lo attacks.
The continued heaviness of Amalgamated
Copper In the oulslde market also gavo.
evidence of the saturaled state of the pub
lic domnnd for now Industrial securities.
Added to these Incidents of weakness , con
tinued fears that the coming crop would
turn" out 'badly , and the bears 1iad a good
field for operations. Ther was very mile.
reslslanco offered to their manipulation , but
their operations were not very hold and not
on a very large scale. The early sirenglh
In Sugar served lo dcler Ihcm somewhal.
The failure of the foreign wheat market
after 'tho ' recent holiday to be Impressed
with the /ears expressed .In Mic domfstlc
market regarding the crops also had tls
Influence Invrcstrlctlng the operations of the
bears. The break In Sugar , however , and
the persistent weakness of the steel stocks
nnd Ihe rally In wheat encouraged a late
lattack on Ihe markol , which was directed
principally against the so-called Gould
Southwcsterns and .Broklyn . Transit.
The whole railroad list showed Ihe effect
of the raid , but Ihe grangers and Atchtson
preferred showed the best resistance. Net
Josses are the rule , but In the railroads nro
restricted to fractions except for n fw
cases. Sugar was the leader In point of
nctlvlly and , after covering 3'i points ,
closed 1 % points lower. The lobacco stocks
nnd Anaconda were also notably weak , the
latter on account of London selling , ac
companied by further decline In Iho price of
copper. Airbrake lost 11 % points.
The demand for railroad bonds continued
active and the market was strong , many of
the reorganization 4 per cents continuing to
make new high records. Now Issues which
are In course of disposal by underwriting
syndicates nnd second grade bonds are
about all that have not been put at prohibi
tive prices. Totnl sales , par value , $2,790,000.
There Is a good Investment demand for
government bonds , which are at record
prices. The 3s , the &s and the old 4s , reg
istered , advanced H In the bid price. .
The Commercial Advertisers London
financial cablegram says : Business was
slack In the markets here today on the approaching
preaching setllemcnt. The tone was de
pressed. The feature was the slump of
Spanish 4s to 6114 , for the reasons m'nlloned
yeslerday. Olher foreign slocks were
sympalhellcnlly affecled. Tlnlos were 4S % ;
Anacondas , 12 ; Ulahs , Si i ; Boslons , 27-16.
Americans opened flat and remained slendy ,
laler hardening slightly , but they were very
Idle. New York began firm , but the street
was plngnant and the. closing was heavy.
Canada Pacific weakened to under par , but
Berlin and Amslerdam bought freely to
101 ? ; . There Is some contlnsnlal demand for
gold that prevents arrivals from reaching
the bank. The day's session of the ex
change was preceded by 'hearty ' singing of
the national anthem , accompanied by two
cornets , , one played by a veleran member.
The demonslratlon was In honor of the
queen's blrlhday.

OF THE WOOI < MAUICET.
" \Vcckly Report SlKMVM tlint Recent
Good Prlccn Still Prevnll.
BOSTON. May 24. The American Wool
and Colton Reporter will say tomorrow of
the woo' tmde : The slrength nnd activity
nroviouslv noted in the wool market have
been well sustained during the week under
review and in some respects the movement
partakes of the characterlsllcs of a verit
able boom. It is not as yet , -however , a
manufacturers' market , although consumers
have been a little more In evidence than
previously. The greater portion of the busi
ness done consists" o'f purchases by dealers
themselves , although as a rule , \vhero
manufacturers have bought they have been
obliged to pay higher prices or they have
not succeeded In getting the wool. A
number of dealers' are not offering their
wool at all and are practically out of the
market.
The advance in the price of territory wool
in this market has * resulted in checking the
export , movement .and. the few remaining
lots of Australian' wool in bond owned by
dealers are held at higher llgures than
foreign buyers will pay.
.The sales of the week at Boston'amount
to 6,031,000 pounds domestic nnd 657,000
pounds forelsn , making a total ot G.CSS.OOO
pounds against a total of 3,315,500 for the
previous week and a , total of 2,310,000 for the
corresponding week last year. Sales since
January 1 , 1S99 , amount to 96,201,500 pounda

CATTLE Beef steers were strong and
active again today and the offerings , which
numbered close lo 100 cars , were all taken
at an early hour. It Is safe to say that the ]
market Is on an average ofiflOc higher than
on Monday , and some would call It better
than that , As was polnUd out yesterday
local packers appear to want the cattle and
they buy them in a hurry. Every packing
house buyer was in the saddle early this
morning und they rode as if they wanted
the cattle. The quality of the cattle was
good today , Dhat Is , there were some of the
best cattle that have been in the yards this
year , and as high as $5.30 was paid. The
market on a whole was entirely satisfactory
to the sellers.
Cows and heifers sold In about the same
notches as yesterday. Good cows and heif
ers were in demand and sold readily , but in
a few Instances holders of common old cows
thought they did not move off : quite as
readily as on some days. Bulls were good
sellers , the'market ' being aJlttle higher und
activ& at. the. advance , 'and It Is safe to say
that prisent prices-are 10@15c higher than
last week.
Stockers and .feeders were fortunately in
light supply , as the demand was very lim
ited. Speculators reported that the cattle
were moving very slowly into the country ,
in spite of the fact that prices are lower ,
and an might be expected they did not care
to buy many unless they could get them at
a low price. The few -hue sold about like
yesterday , certainly no higher , and fully
25c lower than the early part of last week.
