NEW YORK , May 16. Today's market
was remarkably quiet after the recent ex
citement , th total sales being little moro
than half the number of shares sold during
the panicky two hours of Saturday. Ap
parently thcro was no such thing as n bear
speculator In existence , but with the ex
ception of slight Irregularity In prices nt
the opining nnd a slight relaxation In values
In the last hour of tlio market , the course
of prices was steadily held or moved un
ceasingly upwards. This was rather con
trary to the general expectation , which was
that prices would tend downward In the
abs.nco of buying by shorts , who were
largely closed out by yesterday's rise nnd
with a less strenuous support from the
powerful alliance of capitalists who came
to the. rescue of the market. This combina
tion was believed to be simply for tip purpose -
pose of sustaining the market against any
precipitated attempt at liquidation. The
bull movement , which the late Mr. Flower
nnd his associates had Inaugurated previous
to his death was f-lt to be bold under exist
ing conditions and Its continuance In full
force was hardly looked for. Under these
circumstances there seemed a fair mr : b-
ablllty that Rome of the uncertainties Inci
dent to the season might cans ; n reaction
ary tendency for a time. But the profes
sional traders after the early transactions
tobk the long side of the market and thcro
was uninterrupted absorption of an ex
tremely varied list of stocks -throughout
the day.
Any interruption to 'the advance threw the
market Into a. lethargy nnd nothing but a
resumption of the rise brought any activity.
London was scarcely a factor either way ,
the market thcro being nf elected on account
of uneasiness over the situation In China.
A slight hardening In the rate of exchange
had no other oxplanatlpn than this same
uneasiness. Money In New York , however ,
worked decidedly easier under the Influence
of receipts from the Interior. The money
market benefited also from yestsrday's
payment of the llnal $3,000,000 installment
to Spain on account of the Philippine pur
chase. The Flower stocks , especially Pee
ple's Gas and Brooklyn Transit , enjoyed the
greatest advantage In the day's movement ,
but there were notable advances also in
the stocks of other .Nnv York municipal
corporations. Stocks of the various steel
and iron companies were also strong nnd
thcro were activity and strength In Chicago
Terminal. In the railway 'list Central and
Southern Paclllo rose nearly 3 per cent on
a belief of a benoflclal effect of the unlllca-
tlon of the system. A number of other
railroads advanced a point or over , and
Sugar is up 3 points on the day. Tobacco
gained 514 points. The closing was near
the 'top and flrm , but quiet.
The advancing tendency of prices was
marked also In the bond department. There
was a heavy absorption of Rock Island 4s
nnd the Atchlson adjustment 4s nnd Wis
consin Central firsts were also strong and
nctlvs. Total sales. $3,770,000. United States
3s declined % In the bid price.
Commercial Advertiser's London financial
cablegram says : Saturday and Monday ore
Whitsuntide holidays and the market was
slack In anticipation. They were Irregular
In tone. Americans opened weak nnd hung
dull about parity till New York Itought
Central Pacifies freely , lifting the. market.
London Is again quite apathetic. Spanish
4s were 62 % on the rumor that the coupon
tax would bo remitted. Paris sold and they
closJd at 62ii. Copper has risen ten shill
ings , but the shares were , unaffected. TItnos
were 49V6. Anacondas 12Vi. Ten thousand
pounds sterling gold In bars was bought by
the 'bank. ' Silver was weaklsh. The fort
nightly statistics In copper shows stock
1,072 tons and supplies Increased 628 tons.

close to 175 loads of corn-fed beeves were
on sale. With s uch largo offerings it was
hardly to be expected that the market would
open very strong nnd buyers' ilrst bids were
Ktmeruliy lower. In fact , some of the buyers
announced rlgnt at the start that they
would buy cattle lOc lower. Buyers , however -
over , did not have thilngs all their own way

evident that there was a good demand and
Instead of being lower handy light and me

steady. The most of the cattle of that de

Heavy cattle were not quite as active
sellers , but when good they gold well. The
heavy cattle sold all the way from steady

coarse cattle.
Cows and heifers were In good demand at
steady prices and the offerings of the good

Btockers and feeders were far from plenti

HOGS Receipts of hogs today were the.
largest since January 4 laat , when -M.Uu1 -
head were reported In the yards , With
Riioli an unusually good run It was only
natural that buyers should act on the bear
sldo and accordingly they started out , as a
rule , 'bidding Co lower. The market turned
out to too 2'/siBo ' ( lowr than yesterday.
Sellers , however , were slow to makn any
concession and accordingly the market waa
slow -from fctart to finish and It was IMC
lietoro anything like a clearance , had been
enacted.
The hogs bold very largely at I3.COQ3.65 ,
With a good many at $3.C2'4 ' , and with $3.75
the top , Yesterday the hogs sold largely
at $3.COij3.67ii and with several loads at Ji.70.
It will lie noted from the tableof average
prices that the market lacked considerable
of being So lower and that It was a trlfla
lower than It was on Tuesday of laat week ,
The demand on the part of local packers
waa good and buyers seemed ready to take
everything In sight ut prevailing prices , but
sellers , us noted above , were unwilling to
tie 11 nt the bids nnd that was the only
reaion for a slow market. In the end
everything changed hands. Representative

Hints fia to the framing of plclurcg , s.iys
the Critic , nro Jn place every few years.
Taste develops , and frames that wcro in
general nao twenty-nvo yeais ago are now
rcjcctcil as hideous. .Heavy black walnut
molding * -were then usetl for charccal rind
crayon drawings at all exhibitions. Noth
ing else was thought of and any af f
against the tradition of the framer fit
fraught with peril to the artist. Now BUCK
frames are only attic lumber. The aim of
framing Is not to exhibit the frame , but
the plcturo , to make the plcturo look lu
best. Hence anything that calls off the
attention .from the plcturo to the frame
should 'bo avoided , The frame must bocouio
the picture , bo subordinate to the plcturo
and be well made and utrong enough to hold
the picture. A good oil painting dcaervca
n rich , claborato frame. The bright gold
of the frame only seto oft nnd becomes the
color ot the painting. If placed In a shadow
or shelter box , the lining of the box should
bo In harmony with the gold frame , ot some
unobtrusive color , llko ollvo or old gold ,
but never of glaring crimson plush. Water
colors should bo framed after n moro nlmplo
fashion and olchlng or engraving moro sim
ply yet. Water colors of the popular Dutch
school , which have almost ns much depth
of color as an oil painting , can be treated
moro llko oil paintings. Gold mats and
rich frames may only enhance their beauty ,
but light water colors , especially thcso
where body color Is not used , require light
mate of rough paper , white or cream ; and
cream-white , white and gold , or very slmplo
gold frames.
A water color , In distinction from nn oil
painting , requires a mat to bring out tta
color nnd a glass for protection , Thla glass
should 'bo ( lawless , clear ( not green ) ; and ,
with the mat intervening. It cannot touch
or Injure the face of the picture. Thick
boards of the frame to prevent the wood
from staining the plcturo from behind nnd
paper should bo pasted over the back of the
frame to keep out dust. In the cholco ot
matf , remember that cream tints turn sev
eral shades darker In the course of a year
or two , but they are moro generally becom
ing than the blue whlto. Still , some dellcato
paintings cannot bear the cream tint ; BO It
Is well to test the different shades of whltu
with the plcturo in hand. The complexion
of a water color should 'bo ' studied In the
cholco of a mat as truly as that of n hrldo
In the selection of the right shade of whlto
for her wedding gown. This Is also true
of etchings and engravings. An etching
should be framed as carefully , neatly and
becomingly as a water color ; for etchings ,
llko women , are kittle-cattle and their Idio
syncrasies should 'bo humored. Light natural
wood oak , nsh , chestnut , cherry or holly-
well made , In a olmplo style , are suitable
for meet etchings. They arc unpretending ,
unobjectionable and do not distract the at
tention from the picture , which Is the point
of attention , not the frame. Bronro , gold ,
whlto and gold and cream-whlto frames are
also suitable for etchings. Landscapes re-
qulro slmplo frames ; figure pictures can
bear something jnoro dressy nnd n slnglo
head requires the meat elaborate frame of
the three ; but In each case the danger is
In ovcrdocoratlon. An old engraving or
etching may look well In a black frame ,
but black must -be - used judiciously. Woods ,
like oak or chestnut , gilded , but showing
the natural grain and made up in a flat ,
plain molding , are admirable for frames
and are moro suitable than overwrought
gilt molding.

torpid liver and all Irregularities of the sys
tem. Try them and you will always use
