NE\y YORK , April C8.-Irregularlty per
vaded today's dealings on the Stock exchange -
change anel the temper of the. market was
extremely profisslonal , resulting in irregu
lar net changes , with losses predominating ,
London traded both ways and commission
house business was on a very restricted
cale. Traders were disposed to let stocks
go in anticipation of an unfavorable bank
statement tomorrow nnd one of the large
operators changed tactic * and took the bear
side. Forecasts of the bank stat.'ment are
usually unreliable , but bank reports for the
week seemed ito Indicate a loss in cash on
all accounts ot nearly $3,500,000. Anaconda
Mining fluctuated widely , ending with a
net gain of nearly 3 points on the announce
ment of the largo copper combination ; silver
certificates sold at 65c at one time , the high
est price recorded In a long time. The passage -
sago of the franchise tax bill by the legis
lature was responsible for weakness In most
of the local Blocks , there being declines of
5 points in the Brooklyn Union Gas. 3 > i In
Metropolitan , nearly as much In Consoli
dated Gas and a sharp break In Manhattan ,
although It left oft only 1 % down ; Thlr Ave
nue on the contrary rose 3 points. A reason
for weakness In Manhattan was the ad
verse report of the Board of Health on Its
Ninth avenue structure. The announcement
of a settlement of a litigation held Brooklyn
Transit up In spite of the weakness In simi
lar shares , generally nnd the stock gained
over a point. Excepting Colorado Fuel and
Iron Improvement was noted In 'the Iron
and steel properties. Other strong spots
wera New Jersey Central and Northern
Pacific. The general railway Hat was In
clined to droop on moderate dealings. The
market closed heavy.
Today's bond market lacked a decisive
tone , but the undertone was healthful nnd
some Issues were in keen demand. Business
expands from day to day , today's transac
tions reaching $4,375.000. United States new

CATTljE Lighter receipts yesterday and
today has given the market a little breath
ing spell and the feeling In consequence
ought to be omewhnt improved. Handy
light and medium weight cattle commanded
llrm prices today and the demand for that
kind was a little more nctlve than It was
earlier In the iveek. The market on heavy
beeves was .juat about steady , but Slow.
The market as a whole wns reasonably
nctlve , the most of the offerings changing
handy In good season , about everything be
ing sold and weighed up some time before
midday. There were some cattle In the
yards good enough to bring J5.00 , as will bo
noted from the sales which follow.
Cows and heifers were In demand at the
same old steady prices. As noted yesterday
there has been no quotable change In the
cow market In over n week , light receipts ,
good demand and Orm market being the
situation every day. Heavy bulls were
llttlo slow , as Ima been the case tbo most
of the lima lately , but light bulls were
Not much was doing In the stockcr and
feeder division for the very good reason
that there were not enough cattle of that
description here to really make a test of the
market. Such cattle as were offered sold at
Bteady prices and there Is nothing new to
add to what wns said ; ! Hterday and the
day before as to the state of the trade in
that klnd'of cattle. Representative sales :

Chicago Tribune ; In moody silence , with
lowering brow and folded arms , the young
man stood before her.
Ho was a returned soldier , a volunteer
ofllcor , honorably discharged from the fcorv-
Ice of his country ,
Ho had coma back , as ho supposed , 'to
make the dear girl happy who had hung upon
his neck when ho bade her good-by to go to
the wars ,
Hut the dear girl had rocoivcd him coldly.
A hustling commercial traveler had taken
advantage * of his absence and supplanted him
In her affection ! ) .
"So ! " he wild nt last. "You huvo no ro-
niorsd for your faUhlcBSiK-Hs ! "
"None , whatever , " uho replied.
"You prefer that chap with tbo sample
case to me , do you ? "
"Uathor. "
Ho draw himself up etldly ,
"Miss Grenadine Corklim. " ho imld , "I
leave this house forever. I leave It,1' ho
added , picking up his hat , "drummercd out ,
but not drummed out ! "
And as bo marched out of the room with
a military step the bcartlcBB girl called out ,
"Left ! left ! left ! left ! " after him.

Dr. Waetzold , a famous Herman authority ,
thinks that the chlororien and neurosea , from
which BO many young girls Buffer , may ho
largely attributed to the alniho of the piano ,
It Is necessary , says the author , to abandon
the deadly habit of compelling young glrla
to hammer on the keyboard before they are
10 or 1C years of ago. Even at this ago the
oxcrcltiu should bo permitted only to those
who are really talented and are possessed of
a lobust temperament.
Dr. Wnetzold shown that out of 1,000 young
drU studying the pluno before the ago ot
12 years , COO wore nflllctcd with uurvnus
troubles later on , while tbo number having
affections of this kind WOB only 200 for those
who commenced the study of the piano ut a
later aao and only 100 wpro affected umoua
< hc o who bail never touched this Instru
ment. The study of the vloln produces oven
more disastrous results than those attrib
uted to tbo piano.
