NEW YORK. April 23.-Dcallng In stocks
today was rather dull. The market was
generally heavy In Iho forenoon , while In
the afternoon utrongth appeared especially
amonc those stocks whieh had bc ii the
most depresswl early. The grangers Ini
tiated the Improvement coincident with the
weakness In wheat. London was a seller of
the Intcrnallonals , particularly of Loul -
vllle & Nashville. Although the professional
element W.IB bearish , speculation through
out dlsp'uyed an undertone of resistance
which caused many of the trading clement
to reverse their tactics. Among the gener
ally Inactive shares very material advances
aimenred In Minneapolis & St. Ix > ul. . De
troit Gas , Canadian Paolllc and Illinois
Central. Anaconda Mining advanced
sharp'.y on continued gossip connecting It
with the proposed consolidation. Sugar ,
Glucose and Mctropolllan were well sup
ported , nnd Tennessee Coal moro than re-
covetvd from Its early weakness.
Gossip was revived of some alliance
among the Sugar nnd Glucose Interests , but
nothing dcllnlto was made known In this
connection , parties who should know being
noncommittal. In the money and sterling
exchange markets steadiness prevailed at
practically unchanged quotations. Strength
prevailed In the dealings until near the
close when heavy realizing , especially In
Manhattan and other transportation shares ,
cut off part of the advance , leaving the
market weak , although a number of shares
retained good advances on the day. Business
in bonds was well distributed today and
prices were , In the main , higher. Tolul
sales , $3GS3,000. United Slates 6s , coupon ,
declined H In the bid price.
The Commercial Advertiser's London
financial cablegram says :
The markets here were Irregular today ,
the features being Canadian Paclllc and
Coppera. Tlntos were 43 ; Anacondas reached
13 % ; Utahs were IIH bid , 10 % asked. It Is
said hero that Standard Oil Interests have
now secured a maj&rlty of Ihe shares of the
Anaconda , mine.
It Is reported that Mr. Rockefeller and
the Lewlsjohns have nn agent here with
2,500,000 credit to acquire control of the
Iron market like the copper. A squeeze Is
certainly proceeding. Americans opened
llrm , went half a point above parity and
then dwindled tl'.l the close. In the street
they recovered. The general contango was
4WIVi. Canadian Paclllc opened t 91 % nnd
closed at , 93. It Is said that the company
has got money to buy the Manitoba bonds.
Sllv T was hard. NInety-flve thousand dollars
lars In gold in bars was bought by the
bank.

CATTLE With liberal receipts In slRht It
was not In the Ica.n surprising that buyers
In a Rood many Instancts Marled out by
blddliiK lower prices on corn fed steers this
mornlii . It Is also possible that a few
cattle may have sold lower. Sellers , how
ever , wi-ro feeling tlut the break in cat
tle had gone far enough and that It was
time for a halt , and as a rule were hold
ing on pretty llrmly , so that the early mar
ket was none too active. A little later It
became apparent that the buyers wvmted
the cattle , and the market became reason
ably active at good , Meiuly prices. De-
alrablo kinds of handy we-lghl slcers met
with quite r.nrty sale and the sreat bulk
of all the CMttlo changed hands by 10
o'clock , the market closing stronger.
Cows and heifers were fairly active sellers
and the market ful'y as strong as It has
been for the past Wfiek or more. Bulls sold
at steady prices and the same was true of
calves.
At ) noted yesterday the feeder market Is
not as good as It was the early part of last
wvek. The latter part of last week It be-
g.in easing off and has continued along
that line until It Is safe to say that today
It was 23c lower than the high time last
week. The receipts arc not large , but the
country demand for a week or so has bewi
very light , and at the same time the break
in fat cattle has had some Influence upon
the market on stockers and feeders. Rep
resentative sales :

SHEEP About the same number of cars
were reported In today as wore here yester
day and a. week ago , and though the run so
far this week has been larger than for the
corresponding 'lays of recent weeks they
were none , too large , to satisfy the demand.
The market could be summed up In the few
words , "a good steady and active market. "
Practically everything , that Is everything
that tellers would let go of , changed hands
early In the morning. Everything was soon
weighed up and the sheep barn deserted.
