Inicrcnt In Slock Speculation on n
niniliilNlicd Scale.
NEW YORK , April lO.-lntercst In stock
speculation today wus on a diminished
scale , the dealings aRgreRiitlnir a little over
600,000 shares. Prices moved In an uncer
tain manner nnd a number of market net
Io2sea resulted. There wns n flurry nt the
opening ? nt which the specialties specially
participated , a midday rally led by the
Vnnderbllts nnd an afternoon decline. In
which the grousers were prominent , The
liquidation of Friday permitted a number
of brokers' to return borrowed money and
call rates were Kcnerally easier , Cfi7 per
cent prevailing th sreater part of the
day. Several million dollars of sterling
loiins were made and call money closed
3ff4 per cent , Foreign bankers apparently
n.ssumt'd that comparatively good prices
were probable hero for money for n moro
or ' .ess protected period.
The rterlliiK loans were responsible for
nn easier tone In the sterling exchange
market , The recurrence of syndicate opera
tions and the dotation of Industrials Is the
basis of the expectation of fair rates at
least for money.
This week $2S,000.000 approximately Is to
be. called In connection with the flotation
of the American Pump company , the Clil-
catro & Alton syndicate deal and subscrip
tion payment on Manhattan , white the call
for aulvcrlptlons Involving several million
dollarn on the steel hoop combination has
l > een postx ] > ned. Commission house busi
ness fell oft considerably , but there was
evidence of nn effort to stimulate Interest
In the market In some specialties mraln ,
now that Friday's decline had wiped out
weak holdlnRs * . Sonic Inrfre accounts were
closed out today , causing the early decline.
One b ock of 15,000 shares of Brooklyn
Transit was sold Just after the opening.
The Vanderbllt shares , which all advanced
smartly , retained part of their rise. Gossip
about subscription privileges advanced
Great Northern preferred. Consolidated
Gas broke S points , presumably because of
the published Interview with a prominent
politician favoring municipal ownership of
that Industry. The selling of the grangers
in the afternoon was dtir to apprehension
as to the possible c'liarncter of the govern
ment crop statement to be made known
this afternoon. The market closed steady.
Transactions in railway mortgages were
rather light and while the market lacked
a decided tone , 'the changes either way
were only fractional. Total .sales , $2,235,000.
United States 5s declined U per cent and
the new 4s , coupon , j per cent in the
bid Drlce.
The Commercial Advertiser's London
financial cablegram says : The markets
were Irregular today on closing before to
morrow's settlement. Investment stock *
were dull on dead money fears. They
rallied later. Americans opened above
parity , but were Idle here. New York came
dull and became a shade harder. The close
was midway between the best nnd worst
The only features were Chesapeake & Ohio
and Jvie/w York Contra ) . The latter spurted
sharply on New York buying. Tlie market
here regards the N w York money squeeze
as merely a. shakeout of weak Industrials.
Parli sold Spanish 4s down to 5774. They
rallied to 58 % . Tlntos were 42 > A. The bank
bought \OW \ In gold bars. There arrived
10.000 of gold from Holland. The bank
bought at 71s 9 id a part of nn African
parcel. Trade returns show exports In
creased 7.15 points , but this is due mainly
to new shipping not Included last year
Imports decreased 4 points , mainly owing
to 'tiio rise In copper and tin.
