UNCOIA . April " . ( Special. ) The fu- slonlsts of Lincoln refuse to be comforted since the city election of last Tuesday. It had been slvcn out by them that the open ing wedge of the fall campaign was to bo driven In the capital city nt this election. They put tip the man that they all consid ered their strongest leader , A. I ! . Weir , for ma > or , and began their campaign with an air oflctory about them. Mr. Weir had twice led their forces to victory In the city and he Joined his political brethren In prophesying that ho would again bo elected They were well organized and raised nil the campaign fund that fusion ofllclals In the city could bo Induced to contribute. 1' . H. Cooper , their campaign manager , mndo several trips to the state house to solicit aid. aid.On On the other hand no especial effort was made by the republicans. Less money was expended than In former campaigns , and as a consequence many political workers whose politics Is gauged by the money they receive were noticed driving fusion vehicles and peddling fusion cards on election day , when In former days they had been on the republican side. The fuslonlsts had also nominated n strong candidate for treasurer In the per son of C. II. Imhoff. Mr. Imhoff has been n resident of Lincoln for years nnd Is known throughout the city as a man of strict In tegrity. Then ho was pitted against City Treasurer Altkln , who was asking for a third term , something that is not at all popular with many voters. 1'ojiilrr'H Vi'lii it rne < or. The republican managers only claimed Dr. Wlnnett's election by 7BO majority. Hut while the campaign was at Its height the governor took occasion to deny the boys of the First Nebraska any praise for hclr gallant conduct In the Philippines. The effect was noticeable. At every polling place Tuesday the action of the governor was denounced , nnd when the totarvote was re corded the republican nominee had n clean 1,000 more than his opponent , who stood as the very strongest vote-getter the fu- sionlsts could put up. Altkln for treasurer beat Imhoff by SOO votes. Thcro Is gloom In the populist camp nnd the "opening wedge" has rebounded In a way that causes their lenders to wear a look of dismay. Their one desire since the 1SOG election has been to turn the city of Lincoln over to the side of Mr. Bryan , so that It might not be said again his own precinct , ward and city had gone agaitiBt him. The only result has been a realization that Lincoln Is returning again to Its old- tlmo republican majorities , and that there Is no hope for the fusion pie-eaters in this city as long as the republican party nomi nates men who have the confidence of the voters. The defeat of Darth , republican candidate for exciseman , and Lavvlor , republican can didate for the council In the Second ward , have been considered by the majority of the city as a republican victory. Uarth was nominated nt the republican primaries by packing the primaries with the "liberal" vote of all parties in the Kirst and Second wards , and'stood as the "wide open" can didate. As a result he was badly defeated , being cut In eveiy\i:50bllcan stronghold In the city. The republicans control the board , having the other two members who do not belong to the "liberal" element. An important fall campaign will soon be begun. With three Judges of the district court , a clerk of the dlbtrlct court and full complement of county officers to be elected the re-publicans arc well pleased with the situation. All that Is needed is the nomi nation of a clean ticket and the campaign will be like a summer pleasure party in Lancaster county. Their JiiiiUi'lliiR CoiiiiiilUceM.
