NEW YORK , April 7. Today's sen a-
tlonal stock market war markablp for
great deoMnes that took place In practically
nil specialties. Ix > s es of Importance re
mained nt the end of the day , although the
closing was strontr.
The potential Influence behind today's
plunge In prices was HIP money market ,
whre discrimination wan exerclfiil ng.iliuil
tltt * Industrial securltlps. The Inability of
pome large llrms to renew loans on these
share1) as collateral made It necessary to
saerlllco stocks nt the best prices obtaina
ble. Call rates for money ranged from 5
to 15 per cent , but Ic-ft oft nt the lower
llgum1. The forced sales by many commi -
s lon houses lent renewed courage to the
bears , who constant.'y found new spots of
weakness. A number of money lenders on
the lloor of the exchange refused to pay
any attention to the bids madft by some
brokers , who were known to be trading
heavily In the Industrials.
The calling In of some loans also helped
lo arouse alarm nnd Induced general soil
ing. The w aknefH of nvany standard
slocks and bonds was due to no other cnuso
asccrtalnnble except the selling of them
by weak holders lo protect securities of
le. s certain vnlu or lo secure funds to buy
the shares which 1iad been most depressed
in hope of profit on the rebound. Iximlon ,
which of lutp has been an unimportant fac
tor In the dealings , bought upward of BO-
nharcs of His decline hen.
Whl'.o I'he ' so-i'.illed bull leaders appeared
aputlHtic on the downward rupli of prices ,
he-avy buying prevailed , carrying with It
the conviction that the buyers did not bell -
ll vo the violence of the bear movement
could last. This gradually checked the
Ilerco onslaught on prices and reverses en
sued.
Much thought wn given to the probable
aspect of tomorrow's bank statement. The
rally was found In the offering. * of several
million dollars to the loan crowd by nu
Interest lately very prominent among the
bull leader * ' . When prices were not far
from the lowest a number of commission
houses frply advised purchases whew the
buyer could take , the securities outright or
glvo substantial margins. Buying of this
character had mudh to do with checking
the rush to sell.
Many Interests which had been out of Iho
street for a long time thought the time
opportune to repurchase , ns It appeared to
be one of the bargain days which have de
veloped at various times of recent years ,
This buying gave a considerable momentum
to the afternoon rally , which embraced
evcrvthlnc on the list and resulted In re
ducing the net losses to very small proportions
tions In some cases and In establishing
slight advances In others.
An Idea of the wide- movements \vlilt9i oc
curred In given by the fact that although
Brooklyn Transit broke 15M , yet the- net lessen
on the day was only 51. Metropolitan lost
16 and gained 12i. . 'Manhattan yielded 9 ,
but regained K4 ; Sugar sagged 13'i. but only
showed 2'4 net loss at the close ; Air Brake
dropped 15 , but rallied 13Vi > ; American To
bacco cased off 10 points , but figured for
only 3 points net on the day : National
Steel dropped 13U. but got back 9i of It ;
People's Gns sagged 12U. but rallied
stronslv nnd closed with 3 % net loss.
Hallway and mlycs'-laneous bond prices
also showed a yielding tendency today , with
transactions of $3,000,000. United States 4s
advanced % and the old 4s , coupon , U In
the bid. price , while , the Bs reacted U.
The Commrcial Advertiser's London
financial cahlpgrnm says : Thn marknts
here were very dull ttnd Idle. American *
were featureless till the close , whe-n Central
Pacific broke , sharply. There was a semi-
panicky feollng In the street on the talk of
a money squeez.8 In New York. A partial
ral'r set In n nr the close. Germany Is
selling on the apprehension that New York
will take gold. Tlntos were 92U , a new
record. The story Is current in Paris that
three years' output has been sold at 74
par ton. Two hundred thousand pounds
sterling of gold was taken for the Cape ;
60,000 In bars was bought by the bank.
Monsv was hard .and bank loans were re
newed.

CATThtl For a Frldav the receipts of
cattle were considerably larger than -ual >
nnd a very large proportion of all the
cattle consisted of cornfed beeves. There
were probably llfty loads or over of cornffd
cattle on sale tind buyers could afford to
take 41. little itlme about making selections.
There appeared to be u feeling among buy
ers Ihat the decline .here . yesterday WOH nut
large enough and that prices here were too
high as compared with other markets , for
they started out with the evident Intention
of pounding the market. Th ? early bids
were Jower , salei-men as a rule repor.lin.ir
them as lOc lower. Later on some of the
llrwt bids were raised a little where the
cattle happened to be handy weights und
well finished. The market as a whole , how
ever , was lower and as a rule lO loc lower
than Wednesday.
As was the case yesterday , cows and
heifers were in good , active demand and
the decline on bof iitecrs did not appear to
make any difference with the cow market.
Buyers of that kind of cattle were all at
work In good season and practically every
thing of any a ceo unit was cleaned up early
at aUtidy prices. As was noted yesterday ,
nnd In fact all the week , fat bulls were very
dull , slow and weak. Holders of such bull's
found It no easy matter to unload. On the
other hand good stock bulls arc good sell-
eri1 , as there seems to b a steady demand
for that kind. Veal calves sold at steady
prices.
As the week drawr 'toward ' a cloie the
feeder and slocker market usually experi
ences a slackening up In the demand , so
that It was not to be expected that buyers
would take hold with quite as much eager
ness as they did earlier In the week ; still
they took hold all right this morning and
about everything In the line of stock cuttJe
changed hands In good season , and at prlcew
as high as any time. Some yearlings and
calve * brought J5.15. The feeder buyers
also took Homo of the warmed-up cattle at
prices not much different from those paid
yesterday. Representative sales :
