\VOOED BACK TWO OITHEM. .

Been Mnrrletl 1'lfijTlmeK. .
Charles W. Woodruff , the most success
ful bigamist ever arrested in New York
state , since he has been in the Erie county
Jail awaiiinc trial has wooed and won two
farmer wires who caused his arrest. So
complete has txen his conquest , relates tha
New York World , that they refuse absolutely
to testify against him , and as a result tha
police admit that they -will have to liberate
WoodruH. These two wives -were the only
ones whom the police could use as witnesses.
The remaining wives are cither not to ba
found CT are averse to testifying owing to
tie unpleasant publicity that would result ,
An effort has been made to find some of.
the several icoie nf wives tnat Woodruff
has deserted In the larger cities , but the en
deavor has been tnavallins- is known
that Woodruff has been married at least
fifty limes. He has admitted It. He has
idves ia every large city west of Buffalo ,
and he confesses that he would not know
them If they were lined tip In front of hlni.
Woodruff is 50 years old , faded and shabby
In appearance , but he has a magnetism , a
fascinaiion thnt is noticeable at first sipht.
His home Is anywhere. For many years
he has made Buffalo his headquarter * . , but
his wives became BO numerous here that he
had to move.
He returned last summer , believing that
the change which added years had made ia
him would screen hira from Identlficaiion.
But In this he was mistaken. He was ia
Washington etreet one day when a woman
whora he married seven years before and
deserted a day later spied him. He Ignnred
her , not wantonly , but because he did not
recognize her. She was displeased at what
she considered a flight and she caused
Woodruff's arrest.
It was learned that Woodruff had fi'o
wives in this city , and the police sought
them all in an endeavor to procure witnesses
against the prisoner. Three of the women
bad remarried and are now living ia coso-
fortable homes. They refused absolutely to
testify against the man. Two other women
whom Woodruff married are still single and
both of them agreed to appear acalnst Wood
ruff. An indictment was accordingly found
against the prisoner and his trial was de-
i fem-d till .the police could work up a tbor-
ough case against him. About six weeks
ago Woodruff got word to one of the two
prospective witnesses. She called en hita
at the jail at his request and he employed
his artfulness to win her from the police.
He had tome difficulty In the fulfillment of.
his quest , 'because the woman felt that tha
was acting unwisely in tolerating a man
who had once played tb part of. deceiver
with ber. But zbo gradually fuccnmbod to
the polygamlst's winning ways and deserted
the side of the prosecution. Woodruff's n-xt
move -was to get word to the second -vrifa
and witness. She came to him at the Jail ,
but , by Woodruff's arranr&Juent. at ttac * .
when tbe other wife was not there. Sba
was stern at first. Sbe was eatU&ed that
the had been wronged and ill treated and
Ebe was incllnwi to rpurn Woodruff. But
in Eotne manner , known only to tbe poire * *
mist and ber , tbe prlsone/ won ber over.
Tbe conquest of these two wornen tool :
Woodruff about a week.
A week ago tbe police bad their evident- * ,
as tbey thought , in proper form to present
( o a court and tbe trial of Woodruff -was
j arranged lor. When the two -women on
i whom the dctetUve * bad relied for testi
mony were sought they refused to be wit-
cefcfcee. When told that they -would be sub >
, poenued regardless of their Inclination , tbry
; Bald they would cot swear tbat Woodruff
had nmrrit d them. Tbat left tbe police In

witnesses. 6ucb of them whose wnercabo-'s
are known are reajarried and living In p-od
circumstances. Tbey will not come to Bnf-
1 falo to make public tbeir former misdrnQgi
and errore. The police thought that to
