NEAV YORK. .March 21. The professional
character of the trading- today was shown
iby thi fact that of the 030,000 shares traded
In nearly half were In the two Mocks which
moved most erratically , Sugar and Brooklyn
Transit.
Immediately after itho opening Ihe leading
Industrials were , prottscd foraulo sympatheti
cally , with the suddin declines In Sugar und
Rapid Transit. An Idea of the violence of
the movement In the specialties Is conveyed
by the fact that Sugar dropped 34 points
from the highest In the morning and
Brooklyn Transit 4H. Subsequently they
cndi recovered 7 points from thj lowest ,
leaving Sugar 3 per cent off oh the day and
Brooklyn Transit 1 % up. Accompanying the
decline In Sugar there was disseminated the
denial by an anonymous ofllclal of the com
pany that any deal with compstHlve firms
wn < In existence. The early decline Sn
Brooklyn Transit appeared to bo realized on
the announcement of the company's ab
sorption of 'Brooklyn Elevated. The rally
scemod to bo 'buying ' on advance informa
tion that the iBrigihton BcacOi railway had
been bought In the Interest of the Transit
company. Th prospect that the Third Ave-
nus line might nave to give up Us Amster-
Oam avenue privileges resulted In a break
of 124 In Third Avenue , which dipped to 200.
The general market allowed moderato
sympathetic movements with the leaders
and developed weakness wh n call money
rates reached 6 per cent and then milled
when money worked ajlcr to 3 per cent.
The buik of the business was transacted
around 5 per cent for call money and time
money was up % to 4 per cent for four to
six months on railroad collateral , with In
dustrial collateral accepted at higher rates.
Besides the financing of industrial com-
'blnatlons ' there are several reasons for the
present stiff money rates. Ono Is the s-et-
'tlemient ' every ten days , making six pay
ments In all , of $1,000,000 to the government
In sottlement'of "Central " Pacific obligations.
Another reason Is the preparation for April
dividend and interest disbursement and a
third Is a tendency to discount an Interior
movement of money -whlcn It was calcu
lated would last about three weeks.
London was a seller today of moderato
amounts of the Union Pacific , New York
Central and St. Paul , which stocks , how
ever , showed fractional advances. Ameri
can and Continental Tobacco , after wild
fluctuations , closed Tvhh some * Improvement.
The Pacifies , except Northern Pacific pre
ferred , w ro up fractionally , While Central
Pacific and Southern Pacific gained over a
point each. The grangers moved but
slightly either way and tne market closed
with an unsettled tone.
The bond market lacked a decisive tone
and gave alternate aippearances of weak
ness and strength with the upward ten
dency in vogue at the end. United States
6s advanced U and the new 4s , coupon , Va
In the bid price. The old 4 ? , coupon , de
clined U.
The Commercial Advertiser's London
financial cablegram says : The markets
hero were generallv stagnant today , Ameri
cans were quite Inactive. They opened nrm ,
but the feature being Union Pacific and New
York Central on the amalgamation story.
New York ( bought slightly , then the market
petered out , closing depressed. Spanish 4s

there will be no 'acrense of the dividend.
Utahs were Stt ; Tlnto-s , SOVWJSSSfc. Gold was

CATTLE The market OR b f Blears was
again .ower today owing to the Urge re
ceipts and reporud condition of other mar-
koti. For the two days the market in on
an average just about 15c lower. In some
Instances sales would show more than that
decline possibly , and In others not as much ,
b" ' for the two days the market IB Just
about 15c lower. Many of the trains were
late in arriving- , and that fact delayed busi
ness somewhat , while the lower tendency
of values had the oeual rwult of rendering
th * trade rather Mow. SHU th r seemed
to bo a pretty good demand , and the most
of the catt.esold In reasonably seed scaion.
Cows and heifers were In light supply this
morning as compared with tne offerings of
beef stters , and as there was the usual
good demand the markst on that kind of
cattle was in fairly good condition , suca
cow .stuff as was desirable sold in many
cases early at steady prices. In a few in
stances ycllers thought they did not sot
quite as good price * us yesterday. Veal
calves , etc. , sold in about the same notches
as yesterday.
There were very few stock cattle In the
yards , and anything desirable In that line
could safely be quoted IIB sttady. Thsre
was also a scarcity of feeding cattle , except
warmed-up cattle , which were quite plentl-
fu. , and for which feeders did not appear
to be especially anxious.
It will b3 noted from the-ible of receipts
that the receipts so far this week are way
ahead of previous weeks , and to that H
might be added that the day's run was
the largest of tha month to date , In fact
the . largest of the year so far. Repre
sentative sales :

It will be noted from the table of overage
