THE OMAHA DAILY 1VEI5 : FRIDAY , MATCCII H , 1800. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Bearish Orop News Causes Great Amount of Soittered Liquidation WHEAT LOSES 11-8 BUT PARTLY RECOVERS Corn TnriiN WeriU In Sympathy wlfli When ! I'firk Up 71-1 ! CentN , Lard r. CentM mill llllm Merely Xoiiiliuil. CHICAGO , March 2.-Doeldedy ! bearish crop news today caused a peed dcnl of scat tered liquidation and Slay wheat at onetime time during the sc. slon showed a decline of IHc. Near the Mid , however , shorts be came alarmed on account of heavy export takings nnd doubt ( is to the correctness of the e.arly claims of uninjured fall wheat. May left oft with a net decline of % e. Corn is a shade lower and oats lost Vic. Pork fidvanced GfiT'/ic and lard Gc. Illbs closed u shade hither. All the early news was against the prlco nnd wheat started weak. The weather was moist and mild , the Liverpool market was % tl lower nnd the Price Current weekly nummary said the wheat plant was not In jured to any widespread extent. Under such conditions May wheat commenced % ( JHic lower nt 73f73V4c ? and buyers were jiot numorouH at over Zc. The domestic re ceipts were fairly liberal , 111 earn at Chicago cage and 403 at Minneapolis and Duluth , A year ago Chicago got 72 cars nnd Minne apolis and Uiiluth 273. Numerous buying orders were received from country points In Indiana and Illinois for July wheat and , coming ns they did. from people- who were In a position to judge of the condition of the winter plant , some local buying was nlHo done on the strength of It , The mar- Jcet held stubbornly firm around opening prices until about an hour from the start , but after that selling Increased and Ilnally nfter a severe struggle around 73c for May the boars got the upper hand and broke the prlco down to 72140. Additional rains were falling In California and It was gen erally believed that the drouth situation liad been thoroughly relieved. IlccHptH at western primary markets were 510,000 bu , , against 437,000 bu. the same day a year ago , Atlantic port clearances of wheat and Hour were equal to &G9.000 bu. The market continued heavy with offerings In excess of the demand until about twenty minutes from the close , when , on an at tempt of early sellers to buy back former holdings , the prlco shot up so rapidly that llttlo covering of short wheat could bo done. May wheat hud In the meantime got down lo 729ic and from that It rose to 72c , the closing price. The change In sentiment was brought about by reports of 41 boatloads disposed of for export at the Atlantic coast and doubt as to the correct ness of the Price Current report of the condition of fall wheat , as other authori ties differed from Its conclusions. Corn was rather heavy in sympathy with wheat. Hecelpts were nulte moderate and the seaboard clearances heavy , but country offerings F.howod nn increase and cables were' % d lower. Receipts were 313 cars. Mny opened Vic lower at SGHifMy.c. an- vanccd to 3Ge , then declined reluctantly und very slowly to SG'ic and recovered to 3Gc selling at the close. Trade In oats was small nnd without spe cial incident , fluctuations being governed entirely by corn and wheat. Hecelpts were 183 cars. May began H'ftUc ' lower at 2S@ 23'Ac , declined to 27c and closed at 2Sc. The prlco of provisions took quite a Jump at the start , when It was shown that the Increase in stock of cut meats and lard was considerably less than had been looked for. Shorts covered freely , but when that demand had been satisfied the market be came calmer and the prlco settled down considerably. The Mrmness with which wheat closed , however , caused another up turn and the loss was partly regained. The Increase in local stocks comprised 12,000 bbls. of pork , 24,000 tierces of lard and 258- 000 Ibs. ribs. May pork opened 1012Vic higher at J9.55 , rose to $9.57 % , then slid off to J9.42Vand Improved to and closed at $9.60. There was no news lo account for the decllns ex cept for n Ilrmcr tone to money , cell rates touching 3 ! * per cent , attributable to a call Issued preliminary to the settlement be- tw en the Central Pacl'lo railroad and the government. Although the trade was inclln.d to drag buyers seemed to want the cattle < ind In the end the pens were pretty well cleared. One thing that helped to weaken the market was the tact that feeder buyers were not taking many of the warmed-up cattle and packers have been pour buyers for that kind right along. Advlcts from other markets w.re. not en couraging and there did not appear to be anything to give life or strength to the trade. The general run or the cattle are now selling 2uiil c low r than last week , the heaviest decline as a matter of course being on the common to medium kinds of cattle. The market on cows and heifers was slow , but as u general thing the nmrk.t was not much , If any , lower than yesterday. Of course some salesmen who happened to be fortunate yesterday in having such cattle as were good sillers were not able to do as well today and were reporting the market as lower. Most everything In the way of good cowa and helfery sold In good season. Bulls , as noted yefterday , wer * lower , but today there was not much change in the market. Good veal calves sold at JG.EO. The stockcr and fieder trade was very slow and draggy. Speculators had a good many cattle on naiul and were not inclined to load up with many more until the country demand was more promising1. Besides that the sharp break in fat cattle seemed to put a WJt blanket on the feeder trade. Buyers were neglecting almost entirely the warmed-up cattle , which they have bten buying quite freely heretofore. Th ? result was a slow and lower market In sympathy with the decline on fat cattle. Of the cattle reported In the yards today there wire three cars conslgne-d direct to Hammond , eight to the Omaha Packing Company , seven to Armour and three to Cudahy , all of them bought on the Kansas City market.
