The 110,000 dinner given by Councilman
Guggenhelmer of New York at the Waldorf
Astoria on the night of the llth Is said to
have originated from a joking suggestion
made soon after Mayor A'an Wyck was
elected that Tammany's victory should be
celebrated by such a feast as described In
"Quo Vadls , " with Richard Croker as Nero
at the head ot the table with a wreath ot
laurel on his brow. Mr. Guggenhelmer
failed to see the tiumor of the thing and
took it seriously and the dinner was the re
sult , although , for fear of the talk that it
might have created , the "Quo Vadls" ban
quet was not closely copied In all respects.
The dinner at which Mr. Guggenheimer
entertained forty ptrsonn ! and political
friends was given beneath the spreading
vine In a garden which exhaled the fragrance -
granco of flowers and was melodious with
the roundelay of nightingales , blackbirds
and canaries. Heal grapes hung from the
trellis beneath which the guests wore seated
and flowers actually growing nodded at
their feet.

It was like sunrise In the spring. The guests
wcro walking down a garden paiU. Tullpa
raleed their chalices where once had been a
well waxed floor. A bank of ferns bearing
the dews of morn had upon the top the
roses of June. Between hedges along the
path walked the guests to a summer house ,
In the midst of a tropic jungle of palma.
Full , round bunches of grapes hung from
the leafy canopy. Over all was the light
which came from Venetian lanterns wrought
from Iron , after the manner which made fa
mous the artificers of mediaeval Italy.
There was a marge from which the white
cloth showed. Beyond were bed * of floweru
and In the center of all a bronzed boy , leanIng -
Ing jigalcit a stork , looked with laughing
eye < Tat a purling fountain. Meanwhile the
music from the mandolins was ravlEdlng ,
There wag no lavish display of silver.
There were Instead flowers and fruit , the
most psrfect known to roan. The menus
were painted In letters of gold upon cocoanuts -
nuts , from a part of the shell of which thorough
rough fiber had been scraped away. The
menus at the places for the women guest *

In the odd little town of Derby. Conn. ,
there passed away a few days ago. relates
the New York World , a gentle-faced oU
lady whose gray eyes had watched the evolution
elution of the human panorama through all
the changes of more than 100 years. And In
her strong , rugged toco , lined nnd seamed
with trial , sorrow , Joy nnd hope , was found
the lesson of what a woman's patience may
endure.
It was In the spring of 1SH that the town
of Rye , N. Y. , then ns now n residential cen
ter , was awakened out of Its lethargy by the
arrival of Richard Seaton of Manchester ,
England. Englishmen were not exactly pop
ular In these days , The memory of the war
of independence was too sharp and distinct.
The Briton with moral courage sufficient to
seek his fortune lu America needed more
thnn the regulation supply of Anglo-Saxon
grit and sovereign determination In order to
hold his ground.
It is probable , therefore , that Richard
Seaton would shortly have ended his visit
to America eave for ono powerful Influence
that of his uncle. Dr. Richard Bailey , who
had landed in America in the days when
this country still owed allegiance to the
British crown and who had tended the
wounded soldiers of the revolution.
But Seaton , In spite of his uncle's pow
erful Influence , would have had but a bar
ren time In Rye had not one of these for
tuitous accidents which shape th { course of
human destinies thrown him In the way of
Miss Hetty Purdy. the beauty of the county.
Came the war of 1812 with the partial re
vival of all the old desperate hate , and thu
doctor was for the time again In the shadow
His unfailing good nature and tact In deli
cately parrying every kind of verbal aasauli
won his neighbors In spite of themselves.
Above all , he possessed now an Influence
more powerful than all else to help him
the love of Ephralm Purdy's beautiful
daughter. Peace was declared and then to
the bewilderment of all Rye Hetty Purdy
promised to marry Richard Seaton.
"I have received this man under ray roof
because I owed to him the life of my daugh
ter. In the war just ended I extended to
him the protection of my name. 'But ' marry
him and you arc a traitor to me , a traitor
to our country aud I'll have no more of
you , " said the father. The crisis had come.
Richard Seaton stood alone. That ho had
dared to win the love of an American girl
and dared to hold by that love aud by her
faith to him was enough to arouse the bit
ter hatred of all. Hers was the last face
that looked at him as he sailed away for
England ; her words were the last to linger
In his cars , as with her arms around bla
neck she whispered : "I'll wait , wait until
you come to me , and then wo will know
rest. "
It took five weeks to got to England In
those times and five weeks to get back ;
again. These were not the days of ocean
cables or telegraph , and Hetty only know
of the end of her lover's quest for the
money when a tough looking , bronzed man ,
with a touch of the sea in his dress , stood
before her as she sat reading in the old
orchard behind the farm.
There had been a rough voyage on the
way out -from England. Ono or two of the
men had been taken down with fever. Dr.
Seaton bad been on board and would insist
upon attending them. He was very anxlcua
about his patients ; had nursed them day
and night night and day wouldn't Icavo
them even when the captain wanted him to
do so. Then the men got better , but the
doctor himself was taken down with the
fever and and
Her eyes fell upon the little package held
out toward her. She looked at the sailor's
face and saw there the end of her story.
And then , without word or cry or other
sound , she tumbled In a heap on the
ground.
On the walls of her little parlor in the
old house at Rye hung the portrait of the
lover , for whose return she waited.
"Lay it in the coffin by my side , " she
whispered , when at last she saw the shadow
of death. And it was done.

U la not often than a man's funeral Is
funny enough to make his near relatives
laugh. That , however , Is what hapyiiiiud at
the funeral of Dr. Kellogg of Ashland , O. ,
reports the Chicago Inter-Ocean. The Kcl-
Icgg family Is an old and respected one In
town and , as often happens In old fa nil I lea
of small towns' , Is connected with nearly
every other family In the town.
Dr. Kellogg died In Now York. Ho was
a widower , without any children , and left
orders In his will for his body to bo cre
mated and the ashes deposited In the grave
of his wife at Ashland. Mrs. Patterson , a
cousin , was directed to carry out this ro-
quEst. The death of the doctor cast a gloom
over this whole -bis family of kinsfolks ,
Mrs. Patterson telegraphed directions for
the cremation of the body and watched anx
iously for the arrival of the remains. Ono
morning the exprwmnan drove up with the
box. A funeral was held pnd was attended
by Ashland In a body. The wife's grave
was opened , the box deposited solemnly and
the mourners dispersed.
A few daya afterward Mrs. Patterson 10-
celved a small zinc box , about the elze of
the first. She was horrified to find that this
Inst box undoubtedly contained the ashes
it her cousin. Dr. Kellosg. she know , of
course , at once that something elss , no
telling what , had been deposited In the
cemetery In lieu of the dotor. A quiet In
vestigation was made. It was found that
another Mrs. Patterson In Ashland , a sis-
ler-ln-law , had sent a drees to a dye firm
in New York. The box containing this
dress had been deposited in the grave of
the late Mrs. Kellogg.
A second and very quiet burying waa
held , at which only iMra. Patterson and the
sexton were present. The story was t o
gooj to keep and was soon passed around ,
