"I was In Intimate relation with Admiral
Dewey for eight or ten months and I never
heard him once mention politics. There
fore I have no sort of knowledge as to the
admiral's political views or inclinations.
Broadly speaking , politics Is never dis
cussed by the officers on board American
war ships. The navy has no politics. Its
business and sole purpose Is to do the work
assigned to it as one arm of the national
defense. "

Birmingham , Ala. , to an Age-Herald re
porter. Mr. Worthlngton graduated from
Annapolis in 1882 and wns assigned to the
Junluta , commanded by Dowcy , who at that
time held the rank of commander In the
navy. Mr. Worthlngton was at that time nn
ensign and woe a flag odlcer for Dewey.
Ho resigned from the navy to engage In
private business , but retains some extremely
interesting impressions of the now famous
admiral. 'He ' is very reluctant to speak of
these matters , hut his friends managed In
some wny to draw him out privately yester
day.

Commander Dewcy's health was bad and got

tell. Nobody knew. Doctors Invited on
board were no wiser 1ban 'tho rest of us.
Finally Dowcy ga\'o orders for the ship to
sail for Gibraltar. Arrived ithere , our sur
geon went ashore nnd got two army sur
geons of the British garrison to come off to
the ship and consult with ( ilm regarding the
commander's condition. They failed to dis
cover the cause ofthe patient's Buffering.
Wo remained at Gibraltar for a time and
proceeded from there to Malta. At Malta it
was decided to 'take Commander Dewey to
the hospital. It was there discovered by
ono of Uio doctors that the commander was
Buffering from nbscc-ss of itho liver ,
"A surgical operation was decided upon ,
but the < lo tors Informed ithe sufferer that
the chances -were 'greatly against his re
covery , Dewey mode his -will and prepared
for death. Ho dictated .to . mo letters to mem
bers'of .his family and they were mailed , I
also , under his Instructions , drew up a de
tailed statement as to Jils private affairs , so
that Ihero might be no neceesary trouble
after his death. The surgeons performed
the operation and , of course , the use of the
knlfo made the patient weaker than ever.

came convinced afterwards that Dewey
could not long survive , end they told tilm

A number of experiments liav been mad
with men to learn how thoroughly fish is
digested and to compare It In this respect
with other foods. H was found that flsh nnd
lean beet were about equally digestible. In
each case about 95 per cent of the total dry
irattcr , 07 per cent of the protein nnd over
90 per cent of the fat were retained by the.
body. Other experiments indicate that salt
flsh Is less thoroughly digested than fresh
flsh. The leaner kinds of flfih are moro
easily digested than the fatter Id a da. It
should bo remembered , however , that per
sons differ In respect to the action of foods
in. the digestive apparatus ; and fish. Ilka
other food materials , Is subject to these in
fluences of personal peculiarity ,
The chief uses of flih an food are to
furnish an economical source of nitrogenous
nutrients and to supply the demand for
variety In > the diet , which Increases as
civilization advances ,
There Is a widespread notion that fish con
tains large proportions of phpepborus , and
on that account Is particularly valuable as
brain food. The percentage of phoaphorim In
specimens thus far Analyzed IB not larger
than is found in the flesh of other animals
used for food. But , even If the flesh were
richer In phosphorus , there la no experi
mental evidence -warrant the assumption
that finli is moro Valuable than meats or
other food material for the nourishment ol
the brain.
Tlio opinion Of eminent physiologists Is
that phosphorus Is no moro essential to the
brain than nitrogen , potassium or any other
element which occurs in lie tissues. The
value commonly attributed to the phosphorus
in based on a popular misconception of
statements by one of the carry writers on
such topics. In discussing the belief that
"fish contain certain elements which are
adapted In a special manner to renovate too
brain and so < o support mental labor , " a
prominent physiologist Bays : "There is no
foundation whatever for thla view. "
