CHICAGO. Jan. 27.-Ncrvousncss , as In
dicated by rapid and frequent lluctuatlons ,
characterized the day's trading In wheat.
Uuttng the last half hour of the session
May showed a gain for the day of Hie. but
the greater portions of the advance was lost
on account of heavy realizing and May
closed Uc higher. Corn left off at an ad
vance of $ ac and oats are unchanged , Pork
and ribs rose 7Hc cath and lard 5',407'/4c. ' '
Wheat started under much lets oxclte-
rncnt than It closed jcsterday , but with no
Indication that the bull feeling had abated
to any considerable extent , May opened a
Hhado higher at from 78c down to T7siC , nnd
while some outside buying orders wcro being
executed Improved to 7S'Mt78fac. After this
demand had been satisfied several local
epeculators evinced an Inclination to sell ,
not only parting with long wheat that
Bhowcd a protlt , but tiylng the short side
on an experimental and conservative fash-
Ion.
Ion.As there seemed to be a disposition on the
part of traders with Wall street connection
to let matters settle somewhat before tak
ing on fresh holdings the market became
licavy and May , after a number of fluctua
tions between 77',4c and 78c. declined to
71o. About this time a cablegram from
Liverpool was received to the effect that
Argentina was offering veiy slowly on ac
count of the decreasing piemlum on gold
end that Russia , for political nnd financial
reasons , was not selling much wheat. Some
confidence In the legitimacy of the bull
Bpeculatlvo feeling was Imparted by the lat
ter Information , and the decline was ar
I rested in consequence.
In addition to this buying orders from
the otitjldo of an urgent nature became nu
merous , and May began to climb -again.
Ttecolntn here were 170 cars , of which four
teen were graded contract. Minneapolis and
Duluth got 46 carloads , compared with 391
n year ago. and the aggregate a.t western
primary markets amounted to 614,000 bu. ,
whereas only 351,000 bu. were received for
the name clay last year.
Atlantic port exports of wheat and flour
nrre enormous , arrountlng to 932,000 bu.
When the export figures were posted the
rrowd made a wild scramble to buy and
Jtav. hesitating around 7S'/c. shot up to 79c.
That was a rlso of 1' ' c for the day , and the
timntatlon to secure profits became so
Ftronjr tht munv holders sold out nnd May
fclumpfd off to 774C. During the last fif
teen minutes' buying It again became spir
ited and May rose to "SHc , the closing
price.
Cold weather and Increased country offerIngs -
Ings started corn easy. r.ocal traders dls-
jiosed of long lines , but the offerings were ,
readily absorbed by good commission house
buying. During the last hour of the scs-
mon rumors of heavy Wall street buvlng
Htartcd the crowd to cover and May rallied
Je from the low point of the. day. A large
demand for export was also a , helping fac
tor. Profit-taking during the last few min
utes caused a moderate setback. Receipt"
were 557 cars. Mav opened 'lf ? ! c lower at
BSyt(38lJAc , sold sparingly at 3SV c , advanced
quickly to 31'Jc , then reacted to 39Vic buy
ers at the close.
Oats kept In close touch with corn , al
though It did not show as much gain as
lld the latter. The speculative trade wa
Blow and the demand for cash was limited
to car lots. Receipts were 1S > cars May
lCgan a shade lower at 2SVJ2S'lic ? , declined
to 2S' c. Improved to 29c , then weakened to
CSHc , the closing price.
Provisions ruled strong1 and higher nil
nround. The volume of trade was largo and
for the first time. In wsveral months Impor
tant packing Interests were arrayed on the
liull side May pork opened .WlOc higher at
J10fi2i4filOI71A ( , declined to $10 55f10 57'4 , rose
to $10.70 nnd closed at $10.Ki buyers. The
range In lard nnd ribs -was small.

NEW YORK. Jan. 27.-The changes as a
result of today's trading were rather mixed ,
with gains predominating. The market
opened with hesitancy , but this w.is
speedily dissipated by an Influx of buying
orders and the market started up under the
Influence of strength In thu low-priced spe
cialties nnd standard stocks. London was
a free seller on that balance , the sales
amounting to 30,000 shares , which en
couraged the room traders to put out
larger short lines to check the tl o.
Commission houses had a hircc volume of
buying orders vv ll distributed throughout
the list which forced the bears to take back
stock after effecting only a slight relapse
In Iho market's strength. Prices wore forced
up under the leadership of Rock Island , Pee
ple's Gas and Brooklyn Rapid Transit. The
low-priced stocks were then taken In hand.

The Commercial Advertiser's London

Americans and Africans , hence business
was Impeded today. Nevertheless Africans
were rampant and Americans were brisk.
The latter began dull. Mr. Vanderbllt's de

Review tomorrow will say :
The packers are demanding higher prices
for every selection of hides on th list.
Hides decline rapidly In Intrinsic quality ut
this season of the tear , so thai the full ex
tent of the advance Is not evidenced In the
price. The taniurs appear to have no al-
Itrnnllvo bul to pay the rate ? , and In their
turn demand more money for leather. i

CATTLK Arrivals of rattle were small ,
asv\lll bo noted from table of receipts at
head of column , and out of that number
theie were nine ears consigned direct to
packers , o that the actual number on sale
was small. A < ? oed deal of what was sild
yesterday would apply cqu.illv well today
as there was a strong resemblance between
the two so f.ir as the condition of the trade
was concerned. That Is , It was a good ,
strong , active market on all kinds.
Thu few load" of cornfed steers here met
with ready sale at strom ? prices and the
trade was soon over with , as buyers all
wanted supplies and there were not enough
c.ittlo to KO the round" . Amonp the offer
ings were somp pretty Rood cattle which
sold nt f3 35. The market on beef cattle
has ) been In good condition all thin week ,
and though prices are not much If any
higher than they were a week ago , values
have been llrm right along. Possibly there
mav hnvo boon a lOc advance on some
Kinds , but as a general thing It would
eover It to quote the market as good nnd
strong for the week.
Cows nnd heifers were good sellers and
the lupply was all taken In a very short
time. The prices paid , as will bo noted
from the icpresenlatlve sales given below ,
were 1u t about the same as were paid
yesterday. Hulls , stags and calves also
s-old in the same notches and there Is noth-
Insr new to add regarding the trade.
Stockera and feeders In first hands were
In very small supply and the market with
out noteworthy change. As has been noted
before , Ihe market on stock cattle and feed
ers has been very slrong all the week and
the demand If anything In excess of the
supply. Representative sales :

HOGS The bltuatlon this morning was
decidedly slrong and the sellers had the
best of It from start to'flnUh. In the first
place ihe recelpls vvero light. It being the
smallest tun for a Frld.iv this month. In
addition lo that the repot ts from all other
markets were more favorable. Under such
Influences the market at this point opened
with sellers asking an advance of lOu and
buyers bidding at least -r > c higher than
yesterday's market. It ncemed to be a
little hard for buyers and sellers to come
togelher , for , while Iho buyer ? wanted the
hogs , they did not like to pay quite as
much ns fellers were asking. At the same
time sellers seemed to feel that they had
the best of the deal and that they wcro
entitled to all that they were asking. The
trade wan , therefore , a little Inclined to
drag , though the market was higher and
some little time was continued In effecting
a clearance.
In the end light and light mixed hogs
sold very largely nt H.50O62Vi. ! . 'is against
JMS'tfSK ypfcturd.iy : heavy mixed loads nold
mostly at $3 Will 1.65 , as against $1 65J03.57li
jeslerday. The besl heavy loads went at
J3 C& < R3 70. as upilmt $3 60fi1 ( u ytstrrduv.
The hogs sold today a little higher than
on Tuesday of last week or at the higherk
point touched by the market slnco October
21. The market Is now close to lOc higher
than It was on Filday of last week The
demand for hogs at this point continue * to
be In excess of the supply and packers
are forced to ship In a good many from
other market points. Today there were
