MAY CEREAL CONTINUES UPWARD COURSE

CHICAGO , Jan. 23.-he Wall street deal
In wheat merrily continued Its upward
course today nnd Homo of the gayness of
op I fit touched the traders In corn and
oats May wheat , after a slight dip early ,
closed ljc higher. Corn left off at an nJ-
vance ot 9 c. Oats were benclltcd ' .iQ ic.
Provisions are. about unchanged ,
The early Liverpool cabled allowed that
wheat wa making but llttlo response to the
mlvanro hero yesterday and this put some-
1hlng of u damper on bull enthusiasm at
the start In wheat. May opened Viti c
lower at 72'S73c , und with more sellers
than buyers It Bunk slowly to 72ic. At
"that " point , however , Wall street bulls sent
buying orders and the price soon bridged
the gap between 72c nnd yesterday's clos
ing quotation , 73Uc. Chicago receipts were
13 $ curs , against 27 a year ago , and Mlnnc-
upolla anil Duluth got 356 cars , compared
with 2fi7 for the corresponding day the pre
vious year. Aggregate receipts at western
) irltnai-y roarKets were CC2.000 bushels ,
tigaln t 301.000 bushels a year ago. Tim
fomjMratlvely heavy receipts were as llttlo
regarded as tut unsympathetic character ot
the Liverpool market
The bulls In wheat , paraphrasing a well
known rhyme , altered to apply to present
conditions ot heavy receipts , were In-
cllvidunlly saying : "What care. I how much
they bu while Wall street buyers stick to
me. " With that refrain In mind , and the
desired evidence that New York buyltm
orders could atlll be relied upon , they
Oiolsted May wheat to 73c buforu the ses-
tdon WUH two hours' old.
Clearances ot wheat and flour from At
lantic and uiilf imrts were equal to 418,000
bushels , considerably under their recent
volume , but that and everything olw.sug -
ircstlvo of caution In buying was disre
garded. A report was current about half an
hour from the close that 120 boatloads of
wheat had been taken at the seaboard for
export and on that Information , which
would. If correct , have Justified all the pre
vailing bullishness and encouraged more ,
the price of May was run up rapidly from
around 73iC to 71 ? c. It had previously sold
us high us 74c , but had reacted Ue on somu
lirollt taking. The newn of the heavy cx-
jxirt business proved too good to bu true
iinil the pricn .slid quickly back again to
73-iC on n. contradiction. It was discovered
that Instead of 120 boatloads of wheat being
disposed of for export the message should
have read 120.000 ouuhels of corn. That the
market , however , was running on lines
thoroughly Independent of export business
or other such ancient traditions was quickly
demonstrated. The price- was soon on the ,
boom again , with the- crowd growing
frantic In an endeavor to take on fresh
obligations , and a the bell sounded the end
< if the session May wheat was selling ut
75c , with neveral large buying orders loft
unfilled
Corn received a good speculative support
nnd WOA strong In the main after a short
period of weakness at the start. The mar
ket could not help being Influenced by the
bullishness of wncat" and made Its best
prices near the close Old-time bull leaders
came Into the market again and bought
heavily. A dlsjKitch from New York said
the demand from Uie continent was better
than at any time for a month and at a
higher premium for npot than previously.
Receipts were 40S cars May opened U&ttc
lower nt 37V437l > c nnd Bold sparingly at
37 ic. From that it rose to 3SJ c and closed
ut 3Sic sellers.
The oat market was slronc nnd showed
rather more Independence than usual.
Vrlces were strong from the start , although
liberal offerings from commission houses
wer encountered. Receipts were 120 cars.
Blay opened n shade lower nt 27i'32778C. '
Bold at 27iiic. then Improved to 28Vic and
closed at 2ii23'Ac.
Good foreign demand for provisions , In
cluding lard , waa offset by heavy receipts
of hogH. A disposition on the part of hold
ers to Bell was manifested and the strength
of grams did no more for the market than
to cnuBu the early loss to be nbout all re-
palncd. May pork opened 7MT12V4c : lower at
$10.301(10.33 ( and rose to $10.4214. the closing
price. The range In lard and ribs was nar
row.
Estimated receipts for Tuesday : Wheat ,

NKW YORK. Jan. 25. - Outsiders got
under tha wheat market ngaln with a
vengeance today and lifted prices over 2c a
bushel from early morning transactions ,
closing them practically nt the top nnd I'ili1
lc higher than the previous day. In fact
nu active was the demand that It kept right
along after the. close , advancing May to
79',4c on the late curb , or % c higher than
the olllclal close.
Today's strength was entirely n matter
of sentiment , backed up by litnvy outside
orders , Wall street was liberally Interested
In hoisting tha price. No one pretends to
eay where the present boom will end. There
\\-ns a good deal of unloading today , but
tne demand kept feverish and easily ab
sorbed nil offerings before they had a
ohancfi to affect the market.
A. question of considerable Interest Is thn
attitude ot foreign houses who nro believed
to stand heavily short of the market.
Should the advance force covering by this
Interest sensational developments would
1oubtlcss result. From the low point of
7G ic May advanced steadily to 78 ; c , clos
ing at 7SMc.
Total transactions In the market were
2fi\3,00 ( ) bushels.

NEW YORK. Jan. 23. There were gains
of 1 to 2Vi points In stocks today on trans
actions In excess of 1.000.000 shares , which
were widely distributed , many usually neg
lected shares figuring In the total. The
market hero opened hesitatingly In sym
pathy with Irregularity In London , which
wan a seller of toinu 20.0UO shares In thu
first hour.
The cit'ect or this Billing was but slight ,
owing to the report given by leading inter
ests. The professional element relieved the
pressure wmcn It hud been exerting uti thu
market and turned buyers.
The commission business was In fair volume -
umo and was disposed to follow advances
wherever they occurred. London took back
some of Its earlier sales on noting the im
proved tendency hero. Intlucnces bearing
on the situation were tne handsome In
creases In gloss earnings for the third week
in January snown by St. Paul , Missouri Pa
clllc and Canadian Paclllc.
There were u number of very Interesting
features in the market after the first hour.
Metropolitan street Railway started u sen
sational advance , which eventually reached ,
JlVi points aoovo last night's closing. Man
hattan sympathetically made uti extreme
gain of 3 jiolnts. These movements led lo
a revival of rumors that the relations of
the two companies had been placed on a
more harmonious * basis. The Impression In
the street that In spite of the denials ,
progrtss Is being made In the Vanderbllt
plans tor bringing the collateral parts ot
their system Into closer financial relations
was partially founded on the apparently
solid character of the purchases of Vander
bllt stocky. In tlila group extremu gains
\ver made by New York Central of ( i ? ; .
Northwestern 3U and Cleveland , Cincinnati ,
Chicago & St. Louis 7'-i. Union Paclllc pre
ferred mode a rlso ot 3\'s \ on revived belief
In the so-called Vanderbllt transcontinental
deal , while Lake Brio & Western preferred
was up 6H points on the Idea that the road
was b"lnB acquired in the Interest of New
York Central. The Interests switched thun
nto the low-priced shares and rises of
about 3 points occurred In Rubber. Chesa
peake & Ohio , Pacific Mall , Canada South
ern , Chicago Great Western "A" and Rio
3rande & Western preferred , while the ex
treme iinvance ii Toledo Ohio Central ,
Rio Grande & Western common and Ten
nessee Coai ana iron reached 5 points. The
strength of the Rubber stocks was on div
idend gossip , that of Paclllo Mall on reports
from Washington a to the disposition of
congress to suboldlze American shipping.
Continued talk of the prospect of rehablll-
tatlnc In the anthracite coal trade brought
a rise 01 from 1 to 2Vi In the coalers. The
grangers likewise were up from 1 to 2' ex
cept In the case of Northwestern , where
the advance was larger on Investment and
speculative absorption because of Increases
in earnings. New York Air Brake bounded
up 5 and Twin city Rapid Transit S points.
The largo umi confident purchases of Cleve
land. Cincinnati. Chicago & St. Louis and
Chesapoak' & Ohio encouraged the Idea that
the oft-repeated "Big Four" deal was on
toot again. The closing was firm , well up
to the top figures.
This bond markst developed marked
ettength as the day progressed and closed
active at about the best. Total sales , $5-
1)GO,000. ) Government bonds were unchanged
on bid pricea.
The Commercial Advertiser's London
financial cablegram says : Tne markets here
were active today considering the settle
ment. The. tone was good except In Amer
ican ? . Africans continue buoyant , diverting
attention from Americans. The latter had
a dull opening under a eteady pressure ot
Belling orders. Jobbers refused to buy.
There was u lull In the e-iirly afternoon on
the question of sales and some preliminary
buying before New York's opening which
caused a rally , advancing Union Paclllcs ,
Ontario & Western and Baltimore & Ohio.
The clore was feverish , with a sagging
tendency predominating. The public made
large deliveries at the settlement , showing
no disposition to. look up capital , but only
to scalp dollar prices. The general con
tango rate was about ( : for Atchlson pre
ferred It was lighter. Tlntos were So i , An
aconda 2',4. There was a fair American bid
ding for gold at 77s 9id.

CATTLE Receipts of cattle were again
quite liberal as compared to the average
inn this month. It will be noted from the
figures in the table of receipts at head of
column that so far this week there has
been a considerable gain In the arrivals of
cattle as compared with previous weeks.
Of the cattle here today sixteen cars were
consigned direct to Cmlahy and cloven cars
to Armour from Kansas City , so that the
number on sale was In reality not very
large.
Not many over a dozen loads of fat cattle -
tlo were on sale this morning and none of
them were choice ; fair to good was about
the best that could be said of any of them ,
the bulk being the kind that Is telling at
f I.75SC.OO. The demand on the part of local
packers was good and as there were so few
cattle on sale It did not take buyers long
to clc ir the pens. The prices paid were
Just about the same as prevailed yester
day , there being no quotable chanso In the
market. The caution as to shipping In
warmed-up stuff still holds g-ood.
Cows and heifers were In moderate supply
and the demand fairly good , so that the
most of the offerings changed hands In
good season. As was the case with fat
steers , the market was Just nbout steady
with yesterday. Canncrs sell mostly at
$2.505)2.75 ) ; fair to good cows at 53.00ij3.50 ,
good to choice cows , J3.50 < if4,10 ; good to
choice hetfirs , J3.75JJ4.40. A bunch of choice
llttlo white-face heifers brought Jt.40 this
morning. Bulls and stags a old well. The
good demand and consequent high prices
at which bulls are selling has had the
natural effect of increasing the rscelpts
somewhat. Veiil calves sold about steady
fit yesterday's decline , good veals generally
bringing J6.CO , as against $ t.50 ) last week.
Stockers and feeders were In very light
supply today and with the. demand of 'he
usual proportions the market was active
and fully steady. Some fair quality and
medium weight feeders brought $4.15 , nnd
some good Utah feeders $4.40. Represent
