In a retail way business last week was
rather qulU , as Is Invariably the rule nt
this f canon of the > ear. The winter Is now
BO far advanced that consumer. ! nre gener
ally supposed to luivu completed tha put-
clmt ) of cold weather merchandise and from
now on will only require now and then
Bomo article to piece out the season The
wnnt of an active buying demand la notice-
nb'o In practically all departments of the
retail trade. With , the contlnuincc of rea
sonably mild weather It Is hardly to be
expected that there will bo any marked
Improvement until the opening of spring
trade. Of course severely cold or t-tormy
weather would hive a tendency to stimulate
purchases some hat , nt least In sonic llncj.
It Is noticeable that the. feeling among
business men Is generally good and with
out exception nil are looking forward to
an acttvo buslnchH vtlth thu opening of
spring. Rank clearings are holding up well
is compared with the corresponding time
in previous years nnd the general business
Fltuatlon cin bo summed up as entirely
fc.itlsfnctory for the middle of Janu iry
Down In the Jobbing district , while quiet
It the ruling feature In some lines , no usual
ut this time of year , the i.encrnl situation
Is fill ! of promise and every ono seems to
bo well satisfied.

Wholesale grocers have nbout the sime
report to make ns n week nio. Trade In
all departments I ? fully up to the usunl
Htandnrd for this fceoson ntxl indications tire
all favoiablo. for nn exceedingly heavy run
of spring buslne'ss. The market last week
was almost featureless , but a few changes
In the schedule of price ? uhould bo noted.
The greatest chnngs took p'ace In tobacco
The Amerlcnn Tobncco company advanced
Its quotations on January 14 nbout 5 per
cc'nt Thu combination of the dlitcrent com
panies caused another price- list to be Issued
on January 10 , when quotations on both thu
I orlllard and the Sorg goods we-ro dropped
nbout 7 per cent. The coffee market Is
very firm nnd Arhucklo coffee Ins advanced
' 4-ecnt. Othoro lints nro quoted tl.o same
us a week ngo , but It U thought higher
prlcc.t will rule In the neir future.
In fai Inaccous goods bcnns arc qvotcd a
trllle higher , but the latest shipments of
Jnptn rlco that have been received nro going
n llttlo lower. The market on dtlcd peaches
Is very strong owing to Increased consump
tion nnd the limited supply. Prices on
nil drltd fruits In fact are very firm.
Canned goody and sugar remain unchanged.
Ilutilnarc- Salon Iiiirttely Increased.
Hardware men nro pleased with the pres
ent outlook. Trade Is much heavier than
It was p year ngo nt this tlmo and yet no
special effort hns been mntlc to crowd mat-
tors. A well known Jobber In speaking of
the condition af trndo said that sales for
the llijt half of Janunry showed an Increase -
cre-aso over corresponding period of last
jenr amounting to 70 per cent , while the
Incrogso lu collections wns SO per cent , and
bosldt. ) that last January wns by no means
a bad month Continuing ho said It simply
goes to bhow that there Is a good , healthy
consuming demand In the country and the
people are able to pay for what they want.
All the local jobbing houses icport busi
ness on the increase and the general feeling
Is that with n fnvor.ible spring the. volume
of business will exceed all previous records ,
The market , too , Is In the bast condition
jiosslbla. Thcro Is a llrm feeling In prac
tically all lines and Indications nro bald to
bo favorable for higher prices In the near
future. An advance In both nails nnd wire
Is already being talked of for next month ,
but as jet It Is difficult to tell whether or
not It will tnko plnco. Cartridges nnd
loaded shells ndvanccd 10 per cent during
the last week , but rope fell oft a half cent.
No other changes In the market worthy of
mention vvero reported.
Dry Good * Market A tl > c.
Dry goods men continue to talk very en
A couragingly. Reports received from eastern
markets Indicate , a gruit deal of confidence
In future business and a good demand at
Iho present time. Recent estimates of the
cotton crop seem to indicate a greater
shortage In the. batter grades than at llrst
anticipated , which fact Is having Its In-
Iluenca on the market for the Mulshed
product. I > rIc ° H on practically all lines nre
quietly stiffening up nnd no ono would be
j > irtlcularly surprised If considerable higher
prices ruled In the near future.
Regarding the local situation there Is no !
much to add to what was given out a week
ago. Jobbers aru rapldl > getting in thcli
eprlng goods and nro sending them into the
counti ; ' almost us fast. Orders are dally
Increasing nnd If the present rate be main
tained throughout the season this will with
out doubt be the banner jear for Omaha
JobLer.A local Jobber sized up the situa
tion by saving that the dry goods trade
Is better than It ever has been and it
better than ho ever expected it would b <
nnd better than It ever will bo again. There
Js ono thing noticed In the orders for sprint
goods received so far and that 4s the waj
counti y merchants are taking hold of thi
jnoro expensive ! lines. The cheap grades
peem to bo no longer w.mted and fancj
lines are also picked up rapidly. The Inv
jirovement in the demand for the bottei
trad 03 was noted last fall , but It was noi
as marked , then 'as now.
Shoo Trade Slow.
The demand for footwear is still verj
light. Jobbers at this tlmo of year , hon <
ever , do not expect to do much , so there li
nothing unuMinl in the present dullness
Orders nro being received every day foi
spring goods from traveling men , who an
covering practically the entire northwest
us well as tha neighboring states to the eas
nnd south , and they speak \ery favornbl ;
of the business outlook , rnrmers are ro
celvlng good prices for their crops , vvhlcl
rot only gives them n good supply of rend ;
money , but also makes them hopeful fo
the coming jenr. When there Us a goo <
feeling existing In the country It. is alway
noticed that trade In the spring opens ill
early nnd brisk from the start. Countr ;
merchants nro nccustomcd to rending thes
ttlgns and placa their orders accordingly
\\blch perhaps explains why traveling mei
tire having so little dlfhculty In gettlni
business.
It Is a dllllcult matter to estimate wha
the spring trndo In rubber goods will b
us the weather plays such nn Importan
j > nrt. Jobbers are of the opinion , how
ever , that If them Is the usual amount o
wet weather In this section there will bs i
peed demand for rubber sroods. Thcro I
nlrcnily considerable Inquiry for rubbe
IIOOIH and for mackintoshes as well , but I
always takes a rain to make the good
move freely.
Lumbermen Not Uuny.
The lumber market Is In much the sam
condition that It was a week ngo Ther
Is llttlo or no trade In the country nnd con
frequently lobbers nro Idle The marke
keeps on advancing with apparently ever'
llmllcatlon for prkvt * being maintained an
etlll stocks are not taken. That , of course
Is duo to the time of year and to the fnc
that country retailers nro fairly well sup
jilted and prefer to know more about wha
is to tuko place In the spring before placln
orders. Thcro Is , however , beginning to b
Homo inquiry for fence posts , but It is stll
early for much to be doing , ivcn In tha
line. Local Jobbers nro inclined to be
llovo that there will be a very liberal dc
mnnd for poxts a llttlo later , but still n
one is expecting an enormous trade In an
line.Tho
The hide market Is reported as nbou
steady , nlthough somewhat unsettled , n
prices fluctuate luck nnd forth throug
u small range . Receipts are still llghi
Ivclng consldeiably below the average fa
this time of year.
Trult niul I'roduiM' .
Thn usual January lull seems to bo on t
the produce district Dealers lu fruit an

Home-grown le-ttmo Is now on the in irk <
nnd Is quoted at 40o. Home-gro\vn onion
nro also to bo had for 30c.
In fruit * there Is not much of any changi
but hluhor prices on orungps are expevtc
for next wool : , because of tha advance o
the coast.
Egg receipts during the first part of th

MAY FINALLY CLOSES AT FOURTH ADVANCE
Movement In the Provision Mnrketi

elii Crop Ite-
l > ortn ,
CHICAGO , Jan. 21. A sort of contention
between bearlslh announcement * and bul
lish sentiment prevented much movement
In either direction in wheat today and May
closed at U&'ic advance. Corn left off un
changed and oata are a shade higher. Pork
closed unchanged , lard a trifle higher and
ribs at 2Mc , advance.
Wheat Htartcd steady but without much
vigor , May opening He higher at 7070c ,
The Improvements were only momentary ,
however , as London advices reported In
creased offerings of Aigentlne wheat , which
were becoming oppressive , and cables altii
advised that liberal chartem for wheat were
being made at Odessa , with the expectation
that the movement from that quarter
would increase rapidly.
The Argentina surplus was still a matter
of some uncertainty , but the latest advice *
suggested an exportable surplu * of between
46uuocw and 50ouO,000 bushels , or more than
double thu exports from there last year.
That put a damper on the spirits of the
bulls nnd as there were a few ouU'lde sel
ling orders to be executed May declined to
jO'/ic. Receipts here were 107 curs , of which
11 were graded contract. Minneapolis and
Duluth received 473 cars , against 35S for the
corresponding day a year ago. Primary
western markets received 6rt > ,000 bushels ,
whereas 378,000 bushels were the total a
year ago. Exports from Atlantic seaboard
were equal In wheat and flour to 824,000
bushels without returns from Oalvcstonund
Newport News. The world's shipments for
the week were estimated at 6.4WMWO bushels ,
of which 6,139,000 came from this1 country.
This had a strengthening effect , as It led to
the belief that Europe has not yet been
sensibly relieved from Its dependence upon
this country for immediate supplies The
continued activity of the security market
had a steadying effect and the possibility
that the furor In stocks might extend to
train held the average short seller in check.
The current belief that Wall street was al
ready Interested on the long side and might
reasonably bo expected to protect that In
terest was strengthened by the fact that
whenever the market got down to 70Hc for
May It received good support. Trade be
came active durliji ; the last half hour and
as offerings were carc May advanced to
70 % < 370c and closed at 70c.
Corn was qutot and Incapable of being
moved more than Ho away from 37c for
May. An attempt was made by several of
the bull traders to tlr the pit Into action
and Incidentally force prices up early In
the session , but their efforts met with little
response and the market became very dull.
Shipping demand wns poor , with what bids
that were received ' c out of line. Receipts
wore 670 cars. May opened a shade lower
at 367 < 337c , touched 37Ho and with many
chances from that to 36o finally closed at
37c.
37c.Oats
Oats possessed the sama characteristics
as the leading markets. There was no In
quiry for cash and lesa business was trans
acted In futures than any day during the
last two months. Receipts were 221 cars
Mny began a shade higher at 27Hc , sold at
27 ® 27c , rose to 27g27 } o and closed nt
7c.
A decided Improvement In the shipping
demand and higher prices for hogs helped
provisions. Buying by commission houses
with foreign connections resulted In a slight
advance all around. The shipments for the
week amounted to 12 801 000 pounds meat and
7,096,000 pounds' lard The range In pork ,
lard and ribs was of the smallest possible
kind.
Estimated receipt * for Monday : Wheat ,
120 cars ; corn , 490 cars ; oats , 200 cars ; hogs ,
40.000 head.

The cattle market hns been In fair shape

) ut the demand was also good nnd the mar
ket tended upward , so that by the middle
of the week the market could be. quoted lOo
higher nt least. On rrlday the markU
slumped off , especially on the common to
medium grades , so that for the week no
mnterlal gain was made. However , good
cows and heifers could be quoted ns strong
nnd sales as entirely satisfactory.
The market on stocekrs and feeders wns
strong and active all the week and at the
close prices on the moro desirable kinds
were , if anything , a little hlghsr. The mar
ket is now as high ns It has been any
lime this season so fai. The demand ,
though not especially large , has been fully
up to the supply and that has had a ten
dency to stiffen prices. Hspresentatlvo
