CHICAGO. Jan. 19. Heavy domestic re
ceipts , weak foreign markets , small sea
board clearances anil poor shipping demand
Jlnully won the struggle with bullish senti
ment In wheat today nnd May , after an ad
vance of % c , closed miic lower. Oorn and
onta left oft a shade higher ; pork , lard and
ribs aru practically unchanged.
Unfavorable news from abroad gave
tvheat a weak start. The Liverpool market
paid no attention to the advance hero yes
terday , but on the contrary was lid lower
nnd the continental markets also trended
downward , whllo nil advices continued to
epcrnk very encouragingly of the outlook
for a largo yield In Argentine nnd India.
Jlay aliened UOVio lower at "ffjili'Ovic , nnd
cilthouKh the crowd wns Inclined to buy , its
enthusiasm was checked by the execution
of heavy selling orders for futures from the I
United Kingdom in the hands of cominls- |
Mcin men. The northwestern receipts were ,
inlto moderate , howver , and that In the .
minds of local operators partially offset the I
bearish news from abroad.
Wall street stocks and cotton were steady
lo begin with and that was considered nn-
other nnd still moro important reason for
disregarding the depressing aspect of the
llnropcnn news , the consequence being that
the weakness nt the opening wasIn short
tlmo replaced by a spasm of sentimental
strength nnd May wheat ros quickly to
71 He.
Chicago received 171 cars , of which four
teen were graded contract. Minneapolis
nnd Duliith got 2,0 cars , against 412 for the
name day last week and 307 a year nno.
The aggregate r celpts at western primary
markets was 072,000 bushch , whereas last
year 321,000 bushels were received. Clear-
iincos of wheat and Hour for the day from
Atlantic ports wcn > equal to 420.000 bushels ,
or about hnlf what they were yesterdnv
mid only about one-third ns much ns oil
many recent occn lons. Now York reported
forty Ixutloads of wheat worked for export
it nn early period of the session and one of
the many small successes of the bulls In
the day's market followed that announce
ment. 'Sentiment In favor of higher prices ,
liowever , hnd about exhausted Itself an
Jmur or so from the close , wh n it was
found that there , was no demand for spot
wheat at 3'e a bushel below the onecnln-
tlvo price of May. Near the end early pur-
c-hns'ra became sellers nnd May began to
fag slowly. Ilnally working down to W.VS
TOYnC , nt which It closed.
Corn me-t with buying of a character
which led the crowd to believe that prom
inent parties were becoming interested. The I
( Strength In New York stocks tended to I
tiwaken speculations , ns there was very lit
tle selling pr ° ssure , early prices advanced
sharply. Receipts were * " > cars and ar
rivals at western primary markets were
very large , while the shipping demand had
dropped off entirely. This had a depressing
effect ns the session advanced and as scon
ns wheat began to decllm the demand In
corn dropned off nnd the. early gain wns I
nil lost. Mav opened a shade lower nt
S1' ' t i cj aIvn" ! < > lng to 37Uc then reacted

Oat > - followed corn closely , being Influ
enced bv the same reasons which governed
the lender. Trade wns active Receipts
were 173 cars. May opened n hnde lower

clined to 27H" , the closlnir figure. i
Higher prices for hogs , lack of offerings !
nnd the steadiness of corn held provisions3
Jirm nt n small pdvancc. May pork opened
2ic ! lower at $10.10 , advanced to $10.nK. nnd
closed nt J10.12M. The range In lard' and 1

NEW YORK , Jan. 19. The stock market
wns strong and active all day except for a
realizing movement around delivery hour ,
when prices receded about a , point In
many stocks , but toward the close picked
up sharply , nnd the closing was strong ,
with material net gains In all the lending
shares. The volume of business wns above
thn 1.000,000 share mark and London , nfter
being a seller for a long lime today re
versed Its position nnd purchased about
35,000 shares.
Following the example of the Imperiol
Rank of Germany the Bank of England re
duced Its rate of discount. A continuance
of easy money conditions here wns another
factor In the confidence shown today. The
grangers made new high record prices for
the current movement nnd the average
price of active shares wns nlso the highest.
The strong London tone encouraged a hleli
opening hero and as there was a large ac
cumulation of buying orders over night the
short Interests werei compelled to retreat In
many stocks. There was heavy realising
nt the advance , but the stocks sold were
well taken nnd the market broadened out.
The. greatest nctlvlty nnd strength was
shown by Manhattan. Burlington , St. Paul ,
Sugar , Atchlson preferred , Reading first
preferred , Northern and Union Pacifies.
The advance In Burlington seemed to be
accepted meaning that something was
under consideration In regard to n refundIng -
Ing scheme , although negotiations under
way were snld to apply to the Issue of only ,
a small amount of bomln. The Interests I
concerned were noncommittal and there
was no definite ) development ono way or
the other. The advance In Manhattan was
accompanied by a story connecting the
name of a largo outside Interest as likely to
take part In the financing of electrically
equipping the road , but the denials of this
were emphatic hitherto.
The Increase In the Omaha dividend of 1 %
per cent seemed to have been discounted , as
the stock was Inactive after thei announce
ment and then dropped In sympathy with
the realizing movement In the rest of the
market. Favorable earnings for the second
end week in January lent strength to
Louisville. Lake Eric & Western stocks
advanced on covering by the short inter
ests. The preferred stock advanced 5 % and
the common 2'A on the dissemination of
rumors of a deal with the Cleveland , Cin
cinnati , Chicago & St. Louis. The rumor
of thn prospective retirement of the Minne
apolis & St. Louis first preferred stock re
sulted In an advance In the > second preferred
of over 3 points There was an ndvance In
most of the Gould properties , some of which
linve been Inactive of late , Manhattan ris
ing 4tt and Missouri Pacific 2 points. Among
the Investment stocks New York Central
rose a point nnd a. half. There wns con
siderable liquidation In Kansas , Plttsburg
& Gulf stock and bonds.
The bond market showed relatively more
activity than the stock speculation. Marked
advances were scored aJ [ around , with the
undertone aggressively strong. United
States , registered , advanced H In the bid
rlco.
The Commercial Advertiser's London
financial cablegram says : The markets
hero werei moro active and strong today on
the reduction by the bank of Its discount
rate to 3 % per cent , though a rate of 3 per
cent was generally expected. In some
quarters It is thought the bank fears gold
withdrawals of 13,000 were taken for the
United States , against 12,000 bought. '
Americans were strong at every point and 1
there was a strong support. New York
came strong and the close was buoyant at
the top. The favorites were- Northern Pa
cific and Central Pacific. The Rothschild *
arei said to be buying the latter. There is
a flat denial of the report that the Central
Pacific scheme is ready and It is now
stated that it Is even settled how far the
government will gtvo way on the debt ques
tion. Coppers boomed. Tlntos touched 35 ,
closing at 34 % . Anacondas were 7. Money
was slightly harder on the small reduction
of the bank's rates. Sliver was in con
tinued demand from the east.

CATTLE The receipts of cattle were
liberal again today , more than double the
number of cars being reported In than a
wjelc ago. The packers hnd twelve cars out
, of the. number In the yards direct from
1 Kansas City. The market ns a whole was
I In fair shape and was not especially note
) worthy for changes.
I I The offerings of fat cattle were ex
tremely meager and It could hardly be said
that there were enough to make a test of
the market. In fact there were not enough
to excite any Interest among the buyers
and for that reason the market was not
especially active. Good fat steers sold at
| steady prices and the offerings were soon
' cleaned up. AH was the case yesterday ,
the common to medium stuff was not in
very active demand , buyers not appearing
to care whether they got It or not and sell
ers complained that the market on that
i kind was lower.
< Something like a dozen load ? of cows and
heifers were on sals and the market wns
fairly nctlvo at good , steady to strong
prices. Everything on sale changed hands
readily nnd the trade soon came to an end
for the want of morj cattle to sell. Bulls ,
stags nnd veal calves were nl.so In good
demand at steady prices and receivers did
not experience any difficulty In closing out
their holdings.
The receipts of stockers and feders were
very light , while the demand for desirable
stock cattle was good. The market on the
better kinds was active , and steady to
j strong , but holders of offish cattle or thosi
rather on the common order did not Hnd
i buyers plentiful by any means. Some very
! nlco llttlo stuff rold as high as J4.S3 , as will
bo noted from the sales given below. Rep-

HOGS Receipts of hogs at this point
this morning were somewhat In excess of
the record of a week ago when only 113
loads were reported In the yards. In
cluded In the day'H receipts wi-re six earn

to Cudahy from Kansas City. The quality
of the hogs was on an average fair , but It
Is noted that there are more light and
light mixed hogs coming , and It is begin
ning to be talked around the > yards by
the bulls that the- bent of the hogs have
been marketed and that from now on It Is
likely that the scarcity of corn and the
prevailing hlsh prices will have Its effect
upon the quality of the hogs.
There appeared to be n very good local
demind for hogs thi * rnoinlng , especially
good heavy and heavy mixed loads , nnd
the market opened fairly nctlvo nnd a
