The next matter 'to receive attention was the prospect of an Increase In the visible , Indi cations of which began to appear when the result of stock-taking at the various centers was made known. It looked at ono time 'ns If the Increase would amount to 1,000,000 bushels and on that probability May gradu ally sold down to 70c. The cash demand licre was slow and Atlantic port clear- nncos of wheat and flour were placed at 478.000 bushels. Liverpool and the conti nental markets closed strong in the /aco of an Increase In the Kngllsh visible supply of 1,601,000 bushels. Toward the end the longs showed a desire to Increase their lioldlnga and us the shorts were anxious to obliterate their record , May was bid up to 714S71c ! and remained at that llguro until the close , The strength In wheat and receipts away below estimates started corn firm. TrnniinctlonN Avnlii Itcncli the Million Share Mark. NEW YORK. Jan. lO.-The week opened with transactions again reaching the mil lion share mark , resulting In Irregular net changes , losses prevailing. London , It was estimated , sold altogether 75.000 shares here , nearly half of that amount In the flrst quarter of an hour. There was no new In the market of any Importance. Standard stocks were In heavy demand In the fore noon , all the grangers making new records for high prices. The evidence of support to leading stocks was followed by bursts of strength elsewhere after a period of hesi tancy In the early dealings. There was a rise in Federal Steel on the continued Eood demand for Iron products , but the advantage gatnid was not fully retained. Among other specialties in which , renewed Interest was displayed were Metropolitan , Consolidated Gas , Leather preferred and American Steel , while Air Brake made a sensational advance of 17 points. The Pa cific stocks were weak all day. The. heavy London Belling was of assistance to many hoard room traders In bringing about n reaction In the final dealings , although early In the day , when prlcss were offered down , there was an Increase of buying In- etead of selling orders brought Into the market. It was in the last half hour that practically all of the earlier gains In the niarkct were lost and In a number of shares the prices were carried sharply below Sat urday's close , especially In Union Pnclllc , Northern Pennsylvania , Louisville , Manhat tan , Southern preferred , Omaha , nnd Kan sas & Texas preferred. Previously the market had been rather quiet on declines , hut the greatest activity today was toward the close , when prices ran off. Among the coal dealers , Readingflrst and second pre ferred suffered about a point. Heavy liqui dation In Lake Erie & Western prefcrrerd dropped the price of that stock six points. The bond market maintained a good tone during the flrst of the day , but suffered in common with stock speculation In the late selling. Total sales , $4.875,000. U. 8. new 4's registered advanced % point and the coupons , the 3's , 4's registered and the 6's coupon H point In the bid price. The Commercial Advertiser's' Lopdon financial cablegram says : The markets hero today were active and good , though the closing was Irregular. Americans be gan strengthening and remained ilrm , with Erles till New York opened , when the bears sold freely , causing a temporary re action. There was good support , however , and the close was near the top. There was an active Interchange of buMness , but It is still noticeable that the public Is realizing , though the market is bullish to a man. Coppers were hard. The fortnight's sta tistics show stocks down 718 tons , and sup plies down 718 tons. Money was unlend- able. Eighteen thousand pounds starling of gold In bars was brought by the bank , which has also secured the bulk of the African parcel at 77s BVid. There Is no de mand. The official number of cars of stock brought In today by each road was : Cattle. " " ' rl'r'e. Sheep. 614 293 ' * 'tt20 935 941 Sll 07 4.C57 CATTLE The. receipts of cattle were very light today , only thirty-six cars being re ported In tha yards. However , the cattle received were all on sale , so that the offerIngs - Ings were more liberal than on some days when the receipts have bean much larger , but with heavy consignments direct to pack ers. The market as a whols was In satis factory condition as regards values and any changes that may have taken place were OH the side of better prices. There were between eight and ten loads of cornfed steers umaiiK the offerings and the market was reasonably active so that everything changed hands early. There have been so few fat cattle here for some time back , and at th ( same time prices have been rather uneven , so that It Is not always un easy matter to make exact com parisons. For that reason there Is a wldo difference of opinion among sellers , soms calling the market steady and others lOc higher. The truth Is that both were right , the market was strong to lOc higher. Ono thing they all agrco on Is that fat cattle are selling a * high or higher than any tlmo this season , the decline of last Tuesday having been all made up. Mo'rnover the market can safely be reported as 23c higher than the low day last week. Some pretty good cornfcds brought $5.10 this morning und other very fair cattle sold at $4.75 < Jf5.00. Cows and heifers were In good demand and brought steady to strong prices , the supply blng foon exhausted. Bulls and stags were steady and the same was true of veal calves. ' ' There were a few stockers and feeders In the yards and the market on good feed ers was strong and active. Just at present the demand seems to be for feeders , cattle with some weight , whllo light stockera art not going as well as they did a short tlmo ago. Representative sales : BEKP STEERS. 39 bulls 1113 2 70 HOGS The receipts of hoes were small , as uiual on a Monday , though somewhat larger than last week. The market was In good shape and most everything1 sold In KooA season. The prices paid were strong to 5c higher , but , as the proportion of lltrht mixed and common loads was some what larger than usual , the unles do not show the full strencth of the market. The llsht mixed loads sold largely at $3.5003. ( > 2Vi , as against $3.453.50 on Saturday. The heavier mixed loads went at $3 SSH'SS.SG ' , whlla the long string Hold at $3.0 at the close of lost week. The top was $3.60 , which was paid for pretty deoent heavy weights. While the trade could hardly be characterized ns active , owing to the de termination of sellers to get all the market would stand , everything was disposed of In good season. It will bo noted from the table of average j > rlcen at head of column that the week opens with values 7 > , c higher than they wcro a week ago , but close to 5c lower than they were on Monday two weeks ago.
