CHICAGO , Jan. 13.-Hcavy liquidation by
local speculators exerted a bearish Influence
In wheat today nnd nn tarly rise of iu was

Unexpected strength nt Liverpool , whcro
the market was quoted rsd ; higher notwith
standing the weakness here yesterday ,
Blurted wheat strong. This advance , which
was wholly Independent of nny known con
ditions , made shorts somewhat nervous , und
Ir.sK-iid of May whent being pressed for
tale at 704c , ns It was yesterday afternoon ,
tlicro wcro buyers anxious to gut It nt from
71U0"lc. Local professionals , who almost
to a man have sold wheat short for a week ,
placed llttlu confidence lit the opening rally
und In accordance with their views sold
more nt the ndvnncu. On ti further rise to
71'M)714o ) ! during thu next half hour they
fold again , und In the next half hour hud
the satisfaction of a decline to 71c. The
Hellers , other than these who were short ,
wcro not numerous during the decline re
ferred to , apart from thoss who had the
protection ot culls for the- day at from 71 %
} llc , und the market was quick to react
or. any moderate demand. Receipts at Chicago
cage were 101 cars , of which 14 were graded
contract. Minneapolis ana IJninth imported
GOT curs , ngalnst 412 for the same day last
week und 3iJl a year ago. The nggregnte of
western primary receipts was 674uuO bu > hcls ,
compared with SSG.OW bushels lust year
Now York wired early In the day that the
foreign demand for wheat and corn had Im
proved , nnd there was u good nmount re
ported disposed of nt Knribus City for direct
export by way of gulf ports. This held the
murkct fairly steady until renewed reports
from Argentine , claiming that the weather
wns nil that could be desired , and that the
exportable Mirphip was being enlarged ,
started longs selling on a more elaborate
Hcule. The persistence of the bears was
finally rewarded by a further decline , May
getting down to 75HO about half an hour be-
lore the close. The market was prevented
from a further decline by New York re
porting 75 boatloads being disposed of for
export , and May closed at 7fr > 4C , buyers.
Continued wet weather nnd the whent
rally strengthened corn nt the start. Heavy
receipts were against the price , however ,
nnd us the mnrkJt was given llttlo support
free selling ngalnst calls soon caused a
feeling of depression to net In. Receipts
hero were C6 ! ) cars , and at western primary
markets 1.0S2.000 bushels. May opened .lo
higher at 37'Wi37 c , held steady at 37c ,
then vlumpcd off to 37c nnd closed at 37'ic ,
buyers.
A good cash demand , light receipts nnd
speculative buying helped oats. The prices
were not maintained , however , as the mar
ket cased off In sympathy with corn. Re
ceipts , 131 cars. May began > /4c up nt 2S0 >
2SKC , declined to 27-ic , then firmed up to
27c at the close.
Further taking of profit * by recent bulls
In provisions caused unother slight decline
In prices- . The murkct was burdened
throughout the session by a poor shipping
demand for meats and lower prices for hogs
at the yards. May pork opened 2'4c lower
nt $10.15 , declined to $10.05 nnd closed at
$10.05010.0714. The range In lard und ribs
was Inconsequential.

NEW YORK , Jan. 13.-Stocks again made-
further progress upward today , nnd In some
cases the advances were considerable.
Transactions In stocks wcro over 1,000,000
shares , making the third million-share day
this week , whllo on the other two days
trading was hut little short of the million-
share mark. Transactions so far this week
have exceeded those of any similar period
In the exchange's history. London , in the
t-nrly trading , was a purchaser , but sub
sequently the preponderance of arbitrary
dealings were Bales. There was an hour's
delay In transmission of cobles and this
largely restricted the foreign transactions.
Commission houses and traders were both
purchasers in the general list. Interest fro-
fluently fluctuated from one stock to an
other , nnd when any stock started upward
a , following continued the rise. Reduction
In the floating supply In the prime , dividend
paying stocks and their attendant higher
level led to renewed Interest In the lower
priced stocks. There wns a large demand
for the standard stocks , the grangers nnd
New York Central lending. Uurllngton ,
Rock Island nnd St. Paul made the best
prices In years. Burlington made an ex
treme gain of 2 % points on expectation that
the December statement would lx ? very
favorable. This statement , however , Is not
due for two weeks yet. Among the low
priced stocks which were In keen request
were the Pacifies and Southern railway ,
which advanced 1 and '
I'/fc points , respect
ively , for the preferred and common.
There was but little doing In Pennsylvania ,
which ended In a slight loss. Renewed talk
of a possible betterment In the coal trade
rendered the anthracite coalers buoyant.
Reading first preferred nnd Jersey Central
being especially conspicuous. The greatest
rise of the day was made by New York
Air Brake , with 10 points. The confident
assertion that Brooklyn Transit had ac
quired control of the Nassau Electric rail
way resulted In on extreme , gain of 6i
points for that stock , most of which It re
tained. Manhattan , on further reports re
garding electrical equipment , advanced over
2 points. Sugar rose 3 points on the re
port that a new trust was to be formed ,
taking In that company and a number of
the Independent refineries , but a denial of
the number as far as It concerned some of
thn Interests mentioned resulted In n par
tial reaction. In the afternoon the specu
lative leaders became dull for awhile , but
n. resumption of enormous purchases In the
Pacifies was accompanied by an Increase
of business In the real of the list. Profit-
taking toward the end rendered some of
the stocks decidedly weak , while generally
a good tone prevailed. I3ond prices gen
erally moved upward with some usually
neglected shares figuring prominently In
the market. Total sales $4,650,000. United
States new 4s , coupon , advanced % per
cent , and the new 4s , registered , the 3s
and the old 4s , coupon , U per cent In thu
bid nrlce.
The Commercial Advertiser's London
financial cablegram says : Settlement nnd
telegraphic Interruptions retarded busluess
hero today. The tone was firm. Paris was
almost entirely shut off. Americans dull ,
whllo profit taking proceeded with fair
activity. New York quotations were de
layed until near the close , when thei mar
ket was strengthened and became lively.
There was active bidding for Southern
Railway securities , nnd the general feeling
of cheerfulness pervaded the market. Cop
pers were good. Tlntos touched 33 % . Ana
condas opened at 7-1G to end In March.
The amount taken by th , Bank was 131-
000 of gold In bars at 77s lOd.

A man from an
Broadway hotel , relates the Now York Sun ,
ana the clerk meant well In tils efforts to
be gracious and landed the stock inquiry as
to the probable stay of the western arrival.
"Maybe two weeks ; maybe a month ; may
stay until spring , " was the reply.
The clerk rubbed down the blotter over
the signature until the friction burned the
ends of his flngera and then asked , "Ameri
can or European ? "
"Breakfast on the American , dinner on
the European and supper which ever way I
want. "
"As you please. No harm , I hope. Orders ,
you know. " said the clerk , trying to keep
on his feet. And ttien this , "Room witb
bath ? "
"Room bo hanged ! Say. young fellow , I
want a whole soot how many rooms In
one of them soots ? "
"Certainly. We have suites for two or
three , or moro as you wish. "
"What's a four-soot worth ? "
"Depends upon how high you wish to go ,
sir , and whether you want the suite by tbo
day , week or month. "
"Well , I don't want to go up more than
one stairway. I want It on ttio floor light
over the office hero and not too far from the
saloon. And , as I said when I came In , I
don't know how long I'll etay. You can
charge mo up with four day's worth and If
I don't want to stay that long you can keep
the change. If I stay a mouth wo can make
a dicker of gome kind that'll be eatlsfactory.
What time do you have supper ? "
"You moan tea ? "
"No. I mean supper. I want to live here
as I llvo In Iowa , where we eat three square
meals a day. "
"Certainly , certainly , sir. Any hour you
wish. Meals are served In the cafe at all
hours. "
"Where's the dining room ? "
The clerk was getting agitated. Ho said
something and asked It the guest wished to
go to his room ,
"Soot , hang you , Boot ! I said soot. Four
of 'em. No ; I don't want to go to my soot
until I've had supper. "
"All right , sir. Supper Is now ready In
the dining room , floor above , or in the cafe
on this floor. Any baggage to go up ? "
"I left two trunks on t'other eltlo of the
river and two more'll bo In some time this
week. Maybe my wife and two glrls'll be
In next week. Depends on how I like It. "
"Yes , sir. Hope you'll enjoy the city , sir.
Must bo quite a relief to you hardy sons of
the soil to leave your ploughshares and an
things nnd come to the city for a few days. "
The Iowa man let out a laugh which
nearly upset the bust on tbo safe In the
ofllco.
"Soil ? " ho said , with another ringing
laugh. "Soil , my son , did you say hardy
son of soil ? Why , my son , are you still
laboring under the old Bryan hallucination
that a farmer Is a downtrodden man ? Do I
look like one ? You chaps that live In three
rooms In a city are the downtrodden. Soil
bo hanged ! Say , when I left homo May corn
was 39 % cents and was still climbing.
Ploughshare ! Where's the telegraft office ?
Quesa I'll telegraft the boys to take the
ploughshare out ot the ground before It
makes millionaires out of the whole family.

CATTLE All told there were thirty-six
loads of cnttle reported in the yards this
morning , of which number seven were
dressed beef steers from Kansas City con
signed direct to Cudahy and one load to
the Omaha , leaving only twenty-eight loads
on sale. Of the cattle offered for sale there
were about three load * of cornfed steers ,
ten or fifteen loads of cows and heifers ,
and the balance made up of stock cattle ,
feeders , odds and ends.
The few corn cattle sold at prices that
looked a little stionger than the prices paid
two days ago , showing that the market has
Improved somewhat , the gain being duo to
the. very light receipts. The cattle here
wore half-fat stuff ranging from $1.10 up to
$ i.OO for a pretty decent bunch of steers.
Even-thing was sold early.
Cows and heifers brought steady prices
and the receipts were generally disposed of
In a very short time. Sellers were well
pleased with the prices paid , the only
trouble being that there was not enough
to sell. Veal calves brought steady prices ,
pretty fair ones going at $6.50 , the same as
yesterday. Bulls and stags also brought
steady prices. One very choice fat Here
ford bull , ns good as could bo made ,
brought $4.00.
There were a few stockers and feeders In
the yards , but the market was without new
feature of Importance , While th ; small
number of cattle on sale would naturally
lead to better prices , the demand was so
light that the market was no more than
steady at the decline noted yesterday nnd
the day before. There was some little In
quiry lor choice stuff , and some dealers
professed to believe that the right kind of
stuff would have sold well. Most of the
stock cattle coming are rather on the com
mon order , though there are some pretty
fair bunches among the offerings. Repre

HOGS The bears had the best of It In the
hog trade today. There were pretty liberal
rec lpts nnd lower prices at all market
points. The trade opened a big 5c lower , erIn
In some cases as much us lOc lower , then
It seemed to ease off , but finally rallied and
closed about like It opined , or a little better
than the extreme low point. It was rather
tlow and draggy , but largely because sellers
v.-ero backward about making all the con
cessions that buvers wanted and ware In
clined to hold on for firmer prices than were
bid. Still they kept letting go nnd soon
after the middle of the- forenoon the pens
wsro practically cleared. Light and Ilcht
mixed loads sold generally at $1 V > fi3 02H ,
with now and then n very good load nt J3 53.
while yesterday the name kind brought $3.tO

for the most part went at V1.55 , ns against
} 3 GO for the long string yesterday. A few
of th better mixed loads fold up to $1.57',4
nnd prime heavy brought M.COf3 G5. the top
yesterday having been only J3.G7'f. Con
sidering the reports received from other sellIng -
Ing prints , the market here was by no means
In bad shape.
Todav's decline , as will be noted from the
table of average prices , put the market back
to where It was on WetnpFday | , the gain of
yesterday being Just about wiped out. Still ,
with the exception of yesterday , the hogs

The market Is now 12' ' c higher than It wus

SHEEP Today's receipts of sheep were
ths largest of any day since November 21 ,
eighteen cars being reported received. The
market was In fair condition considering
the condition ofastern markets , nnd the
trade was fairly active , so that about
everything on sale changed hands early In
the morning. The prices paid were steady
to lOo or 15c lower. That Is something
that just happened to please buyers , and
for which they had some Hiieclal use sold
as wull as yesterday or the day before ,
whllo others had to sell lower. Some good
fed ewes sold nt $3.45 , the same kind hav
ing brought $ V-0 two days ago , but It was
generally conceded that they wild high the
other day. Some other calfR In the same
wav showed more or less loss In price.
Pretty fair western lambs brought $4.75 ,
nlco light yearlings $1.23 , and big heavy
western yearlings $1.90. Heavy western
wethers sold at $1.75 , and lighter weights
brought $ . ! .95 , which will give some Idea of
the way the stuff sold.
