10 THE OMAHA DATI/Y BEE : FRIDAY , JA UAHT 13 , 189H. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL IRoporU of a Heavy Orop In Argentina Give Wheat a Backset. MAY OPTION CLOSES WITH A SMALL LOSS Corn nml Onn , Hovrevor , Arc n Simile HlKlier , Hut All MUCH of 1'ro- VtHlllll * SlUMV Ue- ClItlCM , CHICAGO. Jan. 12.-Hcport8 of a heavy .crop of wheat ot good quality In Argentine broke the confidence of holders of wheat to- tiny and robbed the market of > ,4c gain made earlier In Ulio session. May closed with \\c \ Joss ; corn and oats left off a shade higher ; pork declined Cc and lard and ribs * 24c ! each. There was enough bullish foiling among itrcders carried over from yesterday to start Wheat strong , although the general situa tion before business began suggested n downward course. Liverpool cables came only Vid higher and the Price Current ppoke of the prospects for winter wheat more en couragingly. One point of the early news concerning domestic receipts was Interpre ted favorably to the bulls. Northwest re ceipts were quite- moderate 112 cars , against 441 for the same day last week and 332 for .the corresponding day last year , and Chicago cage received 14s cars , ot which only twenty-live graded contract. Hay opened n. shade lower at 70071c , and as the market licgan to show strength shorts took fright and covered. AM there , was little for sale , competition soon help.d the price and Tklny advanced to 71' , c. A private message from n leading local trader , who Is abroad , re ported Russians cancelling rye sales and declared that France was a buyer of wheat. 'J'hls had a bullish effect and as a New York syndicate which was reported long about C.OOO.OOO bunhuls bought on every llttlo dip , the prlco held fttadlly within He of the top the greater portion of the session. The ag- Eregate of tnu western 'primary market re ceipts was 648,000 bushels , nearly double that for the same day last year. The clear- onccs of whfat and Hour nt the Atlantic ecahoard , which acted as a stimulant to de clining prices yesterday , had u depressing effect today , ap only 401,000 bushels were re ported handled. Reports received late In the day said that the Argentine wheat crop would be of largo proportions and the grain of good quality. As the expectation of a deficit In that quarter has been one of the fliistalnlng features hero of late , this piece of news had a weakening effect and May declined to 70ic , buyers , the closing price. Damp weather and bullish news from the country concerning the demand for feeding nml reduced stocks In first hands strength ened rgrn. May opened a shade higher at 37',4537- ! . and as buying ordero were quite numerous the price during the llrst hour nnd a half was forced slowly but pr- Klstcntly up to 37c. Receipts were 714 cars. Kxport clearances were small 226,000 bush- elf but the demand hero from the east was Kcod and some sales for shipment were re ported. Railroad cars also were less scarce , although shippers still complained of being unable to procure all they wanted. When wheat In the last hour began to droop , corn followed , getting very heavy near the end. Selling orders began pouring Into the' pit nnd May sagged to 3714Q37UC and closed at Light offerings nnd small receipt ? 131 cars strengthened oats. There was a good export Inquiry nnd a few speculative orders were sufllclent to send prices upward. May opened a shade lower at 27027c and ndvanced to 2Sc. whore It held steady during the greater portion of the session. Near the end , however , oata yielded with the other grains and May sagged off to 27 % ® 27&c and closed at 27yt027o. / A light run of hogs nnd a good export do- mnnd for meat products started provisions strong. The market was called upon to absorb serb n good deal of long property , but as commission houses bought freely prices were well maintained until wheat and corn began to show weakness. Then provisions liecamo heuvy nnd the early gain was lost. IMay pork opened a shade higher at $10.22V4 GI10.23 , advanced to $ I0.27V4 , then sold off to J10.15 and closed nt $10.174. May lard began unchanged at $5.80 , sold at $3.S2V4. weakened to $3.73 and closed at $3.7714. May rlbn Btarted unchanged at $5.12H. rose to S3.15 , declined to $3.07i/.05.10 and left oft nt $5.10. The market , as u whole , was In a good deal the same condition It was yesterday. Only a , few loads of corn-fed steers were to be found among the. offerings and none that were choice so that there was not very- much upon which to form an estimate of the market. The buyers evidently wanted a few cattle , and they bought practically everything in sight. A few pretty fair half- fat cattle sold at prices that looked high and lead some to report the market ns stronger , however , It takes more than one or two sales to make a market , and to call it a good , titeady market , would , perhaps , come nearer the truth. The feeling Is evi dently a little better , and rattle are selling better than the low sales of Tuesday , when the receipts were liberal. Cows and heifers sold In about yester day's notches , the trade being quotable as a good steady mark. > t. The offerings for the most part were all taken In good sea son , end the trade soon came to an end for the want of further supplies to sell. Bulls , stilus , etc. , also brought steady prices , and the market was without feature of Impor tance to report aa regards any kind of butchers' stock. Good veal calves brought the samp old prlcesithat have prevailed all the week. , While there was no marked change of any kind In the market on killers , there was a moat decided change on stock cattle. The country has stopped off short buying , owing possibly to a feeling that prices had been pushed upward rather too rapidly , and the result is a decided slump in the market , as was noted yesterday. Today the market was still very slow and weak , and If any thing , lower. It Is safe to say that little stackers , yearlings and calves , arc anywhere - where from 20 cents to 30 cents lower than on Monday , and If they have been fed corn and are a little on the fleshy order , they are 251Z40C lower. Besides being lower they are. slow , though the decline ought to bring In some buyers. Representative sales : BEKP STBERS. No. Av. Pr. No. Av. Pr. No. Av. Today Sioux City contributed eight double decks , Kansas City five doubles and St. JosJph two. Hie packers reported the Kansas City hcgs which were assorted light , costing only J3.3S. while light hogs sold here the bame day at $3.50fj3.53. The St. Joseph how were also light and were reported as costing a. little more than the KunsuH City hogs , but way lower than the same kind bought on th ; Omaha market the same day. The market opened at this point with hogs , selling 5c higher this morning , though the trade was not overly active at the ad vance. Sellers as a rule were pricing their holdings prttty high and buyers were a lit tle backward about mealing their demands. Later on after the more urgent orders had Inen llllcd. the market eased off a little from the early strength , out still closed In fair shape. Buyers evidently want the hoes and they effected a clearance In good The 'trade developed largely Into a COc market , as will bo noted from the sales below , as against a t5c market yesterday. .Light and light mixed hogs sold all the way from $3.50 for rather trashy stuff up to J3.60 for good. Heavy mixed loads sold largely at $3.60 , with porno rough loads at J3.57U , the same kind selling largely at S3.55 yestJ-rday. Good , heavy hogs sold at 3.fi2'A03.C7',4. while the top yesterday was it'will be noted that today's market touched the highest point of the month to date and the highest of any day since Octo- btr 21. It will also bo noted that the mar ket today was the highest for the 12th day of January since 1S93. Representative sales : No. Av. Sh. Pr. No. Av. Sh. Pr. 103 1S2 40(350 G !
