llrlil .Stock Thronn HIT Ciiiiifn llrenU
In I'rlcen nnil Mneli Activity.
NEW YORK , Jnn , G.-Pcrslstent bear
pressure ; today caused much stock held for
a rise to be thrown over , resulting In a con
siderable | break In the specialties and a do-
cllno < of about 1 point In many of the rail
way stocks.
The market was broad and unusually nc
tlvo during the liquidating process , London
was a seller on balance. The variations In
the early quotations here were small , but
nn unsettled feeling goon set In on evidence ,
that many of the specialties which Imvo
recently been market leaders showed lack
of support. There wcro temporary rallies ,
one at about midday , bringing prices back
to yesterday's clo. lng llgurea. Chicago ap
peared to bo a moderate seller , while. Wash
ington houses seemed purchasers. At one
time or another pronounced strength end
material advances were shown by Colorado
Southern , Plttsburg , Cincinnati , Chicago &
St. Ixjuls , Southern Pacltlc , Mobile- & Ohio ,
Western Union , Colorado Fuel and Iron ,
Rubber , Tobacco , Sugar. Chicago CJas , New
York Air llrnko nnd Manhattan , although
the advance In the. e stocks was partly
eliminated , while In the case of Manhattan
and Chicago Gas they declined below yes
terday's close In the heavy liquidation of
the last hour. Wheeling & Lake Erie and
Ontario > t Western wre also strong spots.
The weakness of the spwlaltles , Including
New York Air Drake , which lost an early
rise of G points , and Urooklyn Transit ,
which declined 56-S ; Federal Steel and Chicago
cage Gns , each receding 2 points , was a
feature In the late decline. A disquieting
feature also nf the late trade was a sharp
advance In call money , which Immediately
dropped back , however , to normal llgures
on the appearance of a considerable supply.
AVestcrn Union's strength was nccompanl.d
by gossip that nn agreement hail been made
with the Postal Telegraph company regardIng -
Ing rates. Talk about the possibility of a
rival rellnery clo'lng down because of the
unprofitableness of present business was
simultaneous with a rise of 3 points In
Sugar.
Considerable Irregularity prevailed In the
bond market , speculative Issues favoring a
lower level In sympathy with the. course of
stock prices. Total sales , $5,000,000 ; United
States 2s , registered , and the 6s , coupon , ad
vanced > 't nnd the 3s nnd
5s. registered , 1-S :
the old 4 , registered , declined 1-S In the bid
price.
The Commercial Advertiser's London
financial cablegram says ; The markets
hero were dull this morning , but brisker In
the afternoon In sympathy with a better
tone in Paris. Hpanlfh 4s spurted to IS'.ii
Anacondas reached 67-8 bid , with large op
tion dealings. Calls to end In January were
U ; middle of February. 5-ltl , and February
2S , 3-8. Copper rose 15 shillings ; Americans
uero bullish early , but In the middle of the
day the continual demand caused a sharp
rise. Louisville < fe Nashville and Wabasli
preferred wcro favorites. The close was
llrm.

CATTLE-Somethlng like thirty-five loads
of cattle were reported In the yards and of
Hint number 11 vo were to packers. When
U Is considered that these cnttlo were of
all kinds It will be readily understood that
there was hardly enough of any kind to
make very much of a test of the market.
The market , ns a whole , was In good shape
for the sellers and values IIP a rule were
strong , so that practically everything sold
at prices that were entirely satisfactory to
shippers.
There.vas only one bunch of good cattle
In the yards. They were natives nnd sold
very readily at $ > .30 , which looked like a ,
strong price. Other pretty decent short-
fed cattle brought $3 , but the most of the
steers In the yards were only warmed up
stuff , .lust the kind that no buyer want ; ?
or will buy unless forced to It by the
scarcity of better cattle. The market on
warmed up cattle Is always iinsalisfactory.
Sometimes they bring more than expected.
because of a shortage of other and better
cattle , but many times when the buyers
are so llxcd that they can they are neg-
lected. . and sell In a way not at all pleasing
to holders.
Desirable cows and lielfers brought good
steady to rtrong prices ) and bulls , stags ,
etc. , were just about steady. The demand
was very fair and the offerings for the most
part changed hand" In good season and at
prices entirely satisfactory to the sellers.
Few stoekers and feeders were to be
found In the yards and they brought good
steady prices. Some western calves sold
at $ llS5. Represi utntlve sales :

HOGS Todays Iiog market was about
2'ic higher on heavy and butcher weights i
and active at the advance so that
practically everything on sale changed [ j ; I
hands at an early hour. A few prime heavy .
brought $3.55 , good heavy , $3.50 ; good heavy
mixed loads generally , $3.I7' , < > .
Light hogs did not show much Improve '
ment , as the low priceat which jmrkers 1
are able to secure assorted light at Kansas
flty tends to keep the market down on
that kind , and shippers must bear In mind
that light hogs no longer command a
premium In this market over heavy hogs.
Prime light nnd butcher weight hogs sold
for the most part at $3.17' . with a few
loads nt $3.50. Fair to medium lights and
light mixed sold largely at $3.45 , with I
trashy mixed loads still lower.
Today's advance carries the market to
the high point of the we-k to diit" . and to
the highest point reached tdnco the close
of last week. It seemed rather strangp to
have an advance on the tup of the break
In the provision market , but the light re
ceipts consequent upon the low hog market
thn early part of the week evldi ntly
stimulated free buying. There were no
very large runs reported at any of the
markets. Kansas City reported 13.WO head ;
St. Louis , 7,500 head ; St. Joseph , 3,5 < r ( ) head.
The receipts at this point were also light
as will be noted from the table above , and
of the number In there were four double
decks of the cheap Kansas f'lty hogs
shipped direct to u packer. Representative
