COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Oold Ware Predictions Send Wheat Up on Quick Notice , MAY GAINS SEVEN-EIGHTHS BEFORE CLOSE Corn nnd Oat * Follow Snlt Upward Lnril AUvnnrrii Two mid n Hull Conln mid Pork lifeline * . CHICAGO , Jnn. 4. Heavy export cloar- nnces , diminishing receipts nnd predictions of a cold wave caused a stinrp advance today - day In wheat. May closed with a Kaln of 7-8c. Corn advanced 3-Sc and outs Vtc. Pork lost 2i4c. hard advanced 2 ! c. Itlbs arc unchanged. The Liverpool wheat market was the chief inlluence here at the start. Cables cumo Id lower for futures. Such apparent eagerness abroad to emphasize the weakness In this market caused the Belling out of a heavy line of long wheat here. May opened a fraction lower with sellers at from 70io down to 70Vic. So much was for sale that the price was forced down to 70Sc ! before intending buyers could shout bids. The At- Juntlu port clearances , however , began to liuvc a bullish effect when Philadelphia rc- jiorted 3M.OOO l > u. shipped for export. When other seaboard cities swelled the total ex ports for twenty-four hours to over 1,100,000 bu. , the feeling of speculators found expres sion In a quick advance to 71 1-Sc. Kansas City wired live days' receipts were not sulll- ulent for local milling requirements and Minneapolis reported such , urgency In UIB demand for today's offerings of cash wheat that the price was advanced to a slight premium over the May delivery. Chicago receipts were 205 cars , of which 10 were Kraded contract. Minneapolis and Duluth reported 584 cam received , as compared with 333 last year. The general response to In quiries concerning the future country move ment of wheat In the northwest was that It was llksly to be still smaller In the near future. Atlantic port clearances finally re ported In full aggregated 300,000 bu. Urad- ntroat's report of changes for the week for the world's visible supply showed nn In crease of only 377,000 bu. , compared with five times more than that a year ago. Reports of a cold wave from the north , which It was claimed would cause severe damage to the winter wheat , hod a strengthening In lluence. The market near the end became very bullish. Shorts covered freely and there was heavy buying for the long ac count , which resulted In advancing May to 714C. That was above call price , and realiz ing on privileges caused a slight reaction Hoar the end , May closing at Tl&S" ? ! G-Sc. Wet weather , which was considered likely to curtail the receipts , strengthened corn. There was also a good export demand. 1'rlces sagged a trllle early on scattered Helling from the country , but when the prices got around the 37',6C mark the old time bulls took a hand and a quick rally followed. Receipts were liberal , 1,075 cars. May opened a fraction higher at 37(4637 ( 3-8c , Hold sparingly nt 37 l-8c , gradually rose to 375-Sc , then reacted to 37V4Q376-8C at the dare. Oats ruled active and higher. The ad vance , was duo to a good cash demand , mod- crate receipts , unfavorable weather and the advance In other grains. Receipts vrero 310 cars. May opened up a fraction at 2714 ® 27 5-Rc , weakened to 27 3-827t c , advanced to 7 7-8c. and closed at 27c. A disappointingly heavy Increase. In the Blocks of hog products for December de pressed provisions early. At the resulting decline , however , commission houses had numerous buyers , and packers who were free sellers turned buyers , the consequence being a recovery of practically all the de cline. May pork opened 7H101/4c lower at $10.30 and advanced to J10.45. May lard be gan lOc down at $3.75 and Improved to fo.87'/4. May ribs started lOc lower at $5.05 and rose to $5.15. Stocks were reac tionary In the forenoon , but forged strongly upward In the afternoon , led by high priced specialties | , Including Brooklyn Transit , Sugar and Tobacco. The opening was Irregular with a tend ency both here nnd In London to take proilts and prices reacted moderately after the Initial trading. Professional traders sought diligently to reach stop-loss orders. Many shares eased off considerably , but n number of stocks showed marked resist ance , notably Brooklyn Transit , Pullman , Plttsburg , Cincinnati , Chicago & St. Louis and Great Northern prercrred. St. Paul maintained a point advance on Its remark- nblo statement for the fourth week In De cember , showing an Increase of nearly $252.- 000 In gross earnings. A better tone de- eloped in the afternoon. Brooklyn Transit made a gain of 8 points on Its showing of an Increase of $664,657 In Us gross earnings for the year. Thpro were Insistent rumors of a pending deal which Insiders would not discuss , but there were Intimations that the control of surface and elevated llncg In Brooklyn might come Into the hands o the company. Plttsburg , Cincinnati , Chicago & St. Louis advanced 3 points on confident buying , which , It was conjectured , was duo to a desire of the parent company ( Penn sylvania ) to form a closer union with Its western lines. While there were large gains In many cases and the closing was strong , the advance In standard shares was gen erally moderate. The rlso In wheat stimu lated Interest In many of the western rail road shares. The advance of 5 points In American Tobacco was unaccompanied by any new developments In the property. There were large purchases by Interests Identified with the company and the move ment was thought to be manipulation against the short Interest which has been recently created by the formation of rival concerns. The Reading stocks were pressed for sale In the early hours and declined sharply. These shares failed to respond to the subsequent general show of strength. The bond market lapsed Into dullness to day , but there Is no abatement of the recent - cent pronounced strongtfi. Total sales , $3- 333,000. United States 2s , registered , de clined Vt per cent and the 3s nnd new 4s , registered , 1-8 per cent In the bid price. The Commercial Advertiser's London financial cablegram says : The markets here were less a.ctlve nnd duller today. Ameri cans opened buoyant on New York's recep tion of the 1'hlllpplno news , but soon be came languid and dwindled until the close , especially Louisville & Nasnvlllo and Cen tral Pacific , although New York bought St. Paul. Aside from that there were probably not to exceed fifteen loads of cornfed beeves In the yards. The market as a whole wad not much changed from yesterday , and was generally of a satisfactory character. The demand for desirable kinds of corn- fed steers was quite active nnd local pack- cm cleaned up the most of them In a short time. Some good fat yearlings sold at J5.40 , showing that anything really desirable Is wanted , and at peed prices. Other kinds sold In about the same notches as yester day. The packers , as noted for some days back , do not take very kindly to the warmed-up cattle , and It U hard work to unload them sometimes , especially If they happen to be on the common order. Feeder buyers nro commencing to take some of the warmed-up cattle , and helps out quite ma terially In some cases. Cows and heifers suld at about steady prices , but the feeling on the medium kind has been weak for some days back , and the tendency lower. At the present time canners are selling largely at $3.2532.75 , fair to medium cows at $2.9i > S13.33 , good cows at $3.40i3.75 , und choice cows and heifers nt $3.755/4.00. Occasionally something extra choice brine ? a little more than the last named figure. Bulls , stags , etc. , sold at yesterday's prices. Of the hogs re ported In there were four double decks to Armour from Sioux City and three doubles to Hammond , six doubles to the Omaha nnd three doubles to Cudahy from Kansas City. All the news of the moinlntr was of the kind that would tend to break down the market. In the llrst place wcro the re ports from other markets us well ns from the provision market. Chicago reported 40.- OflO boss received , Kansan City , 16,000 head : St. Louis. 12,000 head , and St. Joseph , 7,000 head , with prices lower and In some cases slow nt the decline. Another fact that that tended to make packers bearish was that their hogs shipped from Kansas City were choice assorted light and cost In that market yesterday only $3.33. Straight loads of light sold hero yesterday nt $ J.CO with out any sorting. One of the largest pack ers operating on the market reported hlu Chicago drove ns costing yesterday $3.G1 , whllo the average priro paid for all the hogs on this market was $3.57. or a dif ference of only "c In favor of Chicago. So far as could bo learned the cheapest drove bought on this market yesterday cost $3.5:1 : , while one of the big droves bought on the Kansas City market was reported as costIng - Ing only J3.51. The facts are mention ns showing the feeling exlstlng'among buyers and as containing the reason for tholnarket being as It was. The market at this point opened just about lOc lower than yesterday's market. The sales ranged from $3.40 to 3.52' . Some good loads of both light and heavy t-old up to $3.47' < ! i(3.50 ( , and Homo good butcher weights at $3.32U. The great bulk of the heavy and mixed loads went at $3.42 ! iQ3.l5 , It being hard work at any tlmo of day tn get more than $3.13 for anything , UH that seemed to bo about the limit that the heavy buyers were willing to touch. While the market was at no tlmo very active the hogs ) kept selling nnd In the end the yards were pretty well cleared. Representative sales : No. Av. Sh. Pr. No. Av. SJi. Pr. If anything , was somewhat better , though the market could not be quoted any more than steady. The condition of the trade might be best expressed by calling It a good , steady and active market. The buyers seemed to want a few muttons , both sheep and lambs , and they bought up the most of the offerings In good season. A bunch of California year lings , driven In , sold at $4. Two cars of Clark's Wyoming yearlings , black faces , on the native order , brought $4.10. Some good fat western wethers sold at $3.92',4 and fair ish western lambs at $4.62 4. While buyers seemed to take hold a little better , shippers must understand that the demand for mut ton in nil the markets of the country Is still far from brisk nnd not be lead Into too frco shipments at the present time.
