One morning a gciitlcmnn called upon

behalf of a mutual friend in want of
money , relates the Argonaut. "Well , " said
Jerrold , "bow much does Smith want this
time ? " "Why , just four and two naughts

well , " answered Jerrold , "put mo down for
ono of the naughts this time. "
"Hobsnn ought to have heard Colonel
Gordon McCabe's story of the duke of Wel
lington , " said Mr. W. M. Prossley of Vir
ginia to a Washington Post man.
"On ono occasion 'the duke , then getting
far advanced In years and rather feeble , waa
waiting to cross a street crowded with
heavy vehicles. A stalwart young man. approached
preached with lifted hat , tendered his serv
ices as escort , and conducted the gallant old
warrior In safety to the other side. Then
bowing extremely low ho said :
" 'Your Grace , this Is the proudest mo
ment of my Tlfe. In years to come I shall
tell my children , and they shair tell their
children's children , that I had the honor to
eervo the hero of Waterloo nnd the con
queror of Napoleon. ' ,
"With a gfanco that showed intense dis
gust , the venerable hero lie was the genu
ine article replied : 'Youn ? man , don't
make a d n fool of yourself. ' This , with the
profanity omitted , Is what Hobson might say
to the oiculatory dames and maids that h
encounters. "
It was said of Oliver Wendeir Holmes that
some of his beet jokes were made at times
when there was nobody to appreciate them
save a chance listener.
Ono such fortunate listener tells in Youth's
Companion of a reply which she , sitting In a
street car , heard Doctor Holmes makes to a
complaining writer of little wit and lest
talent.
"I've worked with all my heart on that
book , " said the young man , who had been
i ' treating the doctor to a long account of a
recent collection of poetry which ho bad
edited. "I've used my beat taste and judg
ment and research , and I feel confident that
nobody could have done the thing better or
more thoroughly than I have. And what re
ward do I get ? Harsh criticisms for my
omission of a few popular posts , and a paltry
hundred dollars ? "
"A hundred dollars ! " echoed the autocrat
of the breakfast table , wearily. "Why , I
wouldn't have written that book for a thou
sand dollars , .I'm sure. "
The collector of poetry smiled with gratifi
cation , but the listener turned to regard a
passing dray , leat her face should betray
her.
