CHICAGO , Dec. 21.-Corn overshadowed
everything else on 'Change today , both In
trcngth and activity. Continued heavy
cash and export demand drove shorts to
cover and resulted In an advance of 1 3-8c.
The strength of corn Influenced all other
markets. Wheat closed Hiftl 3-Sc higher.
Oatn advanced 3-Sc. Provisions closed 2V4 ®
Cc higher.
For two hours 'following the opening In
wheat the market was as dull as It could
possibly b without remaining at an actual
tandstlll. Trading Is always dull around
( he holidays , but today for the period men
tioned it was ridiculously imall and con
fined almost entirely to a small crowd of
calpers. The opening was weak and lower.
Liverpool ( showed declines ranging from
Kid toid and Paris also reported a de
cline.
The weather in Argentine was reported to
liavo greatly Improved , while raliu In
California continued , giving promise of a
very heavy crop. Northwest receipts were
heavy , Minneapolis and Duluth reporting
819 cars , compared with 716 last week and
472 a year ago. Chicago receipts were 195
cars , thirteen of contract grade. In the
holiday condition of the market this sort of
news did not perceptibly Increase the soilIng -
Ing pressure , but It restrained the buying
demand. May opened % c lower at 66Ji4J >
6 7-Sc. The market held at about that
price for a short time , then slowly but
urcly developed strength and activity.
Corn was the big factor. That market got
Into new high ground and the sharp ndr
vance rather frightened wheat shorts , who
came. Into the market In gradually Increas
ing numbers. To strengthen the bull situa
tion Paris reported an advance In wheat
equal to 1814c a bushel. Clearances from
Atlantic ports were large 992,000 bushels.
The market became very active after noon.
Bhorts found considerable difficulty In cov
ering anything but very small lots and in
the hast hour they bid prices up with a
rapidity that was refreshing to traders with
wheat for sale. The strength to the mar
ket showed It had brought investment buy
ers In and trading late In the session was
very broad. Primary receipts was 1,169,000
bushels. The seaboard reported twenty-five
load * taken for export. May advanced to
68 3-Sc ihortly before the close and that
price was asked as the bell sounded.
Corn opened rather weak and slightly
lower , due to weak cables and the poor
quality of corn receipts , but soon became
strong and during the. latter part of the
cession was remarkably active and firm.
The cash business was hampered by ecarc-
Ity of cars , but was active nevertheless
and the export demand was again excellent.
Shippers were Marge buyers against sales
of cosh. This started shorts to covering ,
but corn was scarce until prices had been
bid up sharply. Leading bull interests also
bought aggressively. Receipts were 550 cars.
Way ranged from 35 l-8c to 38 6-8036c and
closed 1 3-8c higher at 36 6-S < 3389ic.
Oats was rather slow but strong. The ad
vance In corn was the main factor , canning
scattered covering by shorU all day. Offer
ings were limited at first , but plenty of oat
was for sale at the top. Receipts were 2S6
cars. Shippers were good buyers. May
ranged from 26 6-8c to 27c and closed 3-Sa
higher at 27c.
Provisions were decidedly dull compared
with wheat and corn. The market was
rather wobbly at first , due to heavy foreign
markets and frco selling by packers. The
strength of the grain markets later brought
plenty of buyers and In the latter part of
the session the market was firm , prices ad
vancing a little. At the close May pork
was 60 higher at $9.72 % . May lard 2V4HJ5C
higher at $5.32@5.36 and May ribs 6c higher
ftt $ I.S5.
Estimated receipts for Thursday : Wheat ,
166 cars ; corn , 467 cars ; oats , 2G6 cars ; hogs ,
87,000 head.
Leading futures ranged as follows ;

OPERATIONS IN STOCKS AND BONDS.
Fractional Gain * In Railway Stock *
nnd Market I * Strong.
NEW YORK , Dec. 21.-The stock market
was strong most of the day , particularly
In the late trading. Fractional gains were
general In the railways , wihllo the advance
In a number of specialties reached consid
erable proportions. A curious exception to
the general advance was noted In stocks ,
where dividends have Just been declared ,
namely New York Central , Southern pre
ferred and Atchlson preferred. In some
quarters , largo dividends had been expected
and In the cose of Southern preferred and
Atchlson preferred a statement had been
looked forward to that they could bo put
on a regular dividend basis , instead of
disbursements from time to time as the
earnings warranted. A considerable
crease In Its quarterly surplus was re
sponsible for Now York Central's rise- from
the extreme low point. The efforts of Lon
don to cover short lines In Americans gave
tone to the local market early. Most stocks
unaffected by special developments or for
eign quotations were freely offered by trad
ers , but this caused little more than a
period of hesitancy and a shading in rail
way quotations.
Rumors that the Chicago & Alton had
been secured In the Interest of the Union
Pacific and Baltimore & Ohio resulted In a
sharp rise In all the sacurltUo mentioned.
Federal Steel stocks were bought confi
dently by the same parties who have re
cently be n large purchasers , at the same
time they emphatically denied rumors that
Federal Steel was about to absorb another
large concern. The southwestern railroads
were very prominent In today' * activity
and strength.
The bond market showed Irregularity in
spots , profit-taking' being evident in Atchl
son adjustments. Heavy purchases of
Texas Pacific 28 were made late in the
day , which carried them above 49. The
general market , notwithstanding the hesi
tancy of some issues , displayed a very
healthful undertone. Total sales , $5,040.000.
United States old 4s , registered , advanced
1-8 per cent in the bid price.
The Commercial Advertiser's London
financial cablegram says : The markets
here were dull this morning , but a brisker
business was done later in sympathy with
Americans , which opened good and then 1
bounded upward , Baltimore & Ohio and 1
Central Paclflc leading. New York caused
ft small setback afterward , but noon bought
Union Paclflc , causing a resumption of the
rlso. American sales began as the market
closed , causing a flat finish. There has
been big buying here with the Idea of
laying In stock for the new year. The now
French loan Is said to be practically ar
ranged. Gold was bid for at 78s by Ger
mans. Money Is easing.

CATTLE Receipts of cattle were light , as
will be noted from the table above , and
smaller even than yesterday. Moreover , of
the cattle hero there were a dozen loads
consigned direct to packers so that ths
actual offerings of all kinds were not much
over thirty loads. The market as a whole
was strong and active and practically
everything In the yards changed hands
early in the morning.
While there were very few beet cattle
here there were som * pretty good ones
among the number and buyers wer not
long in snapping them all up at strang
prices. A bunch of choice shorthorn * that
had bien on feed a full year or more rold
at $5.5. Other right good cattlts. but that
had not been on feed as long and were not
au well finished brought $5.15. Some good
steers and heifers went at $5.00. This will
give an idea of the way good cattle are
silling. A bunch of pretty fair stuff sold
at $4.85.
Tnar6 were only flvo or six loads of cows
and heifers in the yards , and , as'a buyer
remarked , the man who wanted anything In
that line had to go after It In a hurry. The
market was strong and the offerings
changed hands quickly. Buyers complain
that the cow stuff is selling too high here
as compared with other markets , but there
Is so little coming that they have to pay
the prices. Bulls and other kinds of
butchers' stock also brought good flrm
prices.
Very little was offered In the way of
stock cattle or feeders , but such aa were
to bp had brought good firm price ? . Some
westerns sold at $3.90 , which was more than
the same kind of cattle brought last week

HOGS-Sellers seemed to have pretty
strong Ideas this morning as to the value
of their holdings and as a rule , were asking
prices that were at the very least 6c
higher and In some cases even more than
that. Buyers did not agree entirely with
sellers' views , but they wanted the hogs
and the markt really opened 2i4c higher.
The early sales were largely at $3.30 , as
ngalnst $2.27',4 yesterday. Good light and
llpht mixed loads such as sold largely at
J3.3H4 yesterday went for the most part at
$3.35 today , with some choice light at $3.40.
The market for a time was quits active ut
the advance and a good many strings of
nogs were cut loose early. However , before
tellers were able to entirely unload buyers
began receiving messages from other market
points that were not encouraging. St.
Joseph reported 7,000 hogs , prospects lower ;
St. Louis , 10,000 head , easy ; Kansas City ,
14,000 head , prospects lower , and Chicago ,
33,000 he.id. with 40,000 head on sale. These
were the reports that came to packers , and
under that Inllucnce they seemed to come
to the conclusion that there were no neces
sity for bidding the market up here. Ac
cordingly they sat down , liut It did not
amount to anything as they wanted the
hogs and no buyer could long remain on
the bear side. The result was the hogs
were all sold In good season and very much
Ilka the opening prlcct. A few big heavy
and rough loads sold below $1.30 , but there
were a good many more loads above than
bJlow. as will be noted from the represent
ative sales. It will be noted from the table
of average prices at head of column that
the heirs sold today at the highest point t
touched since Wednesday of last week.

SHEEP-Whlle the arrivals of sheep were
not larg-e , there were more than have been
received for several days back. There
seemed to be a little better feeling on
the market than yesterday , at least buyers
took hold better and acted more as If they
wanted to do business. It would hardly
be policy , however , to call the market any
more steady , as the demand Is still limited
and no great activity Is to be expected
until aftar the holidays. Two loads of
heavy wethers sold at $3.60 and two loads
of the Hershey sheep brought $3.77 % .
