CHICAGO , Dec. 15. Bad crop news * from
Argentina was the motive for nn advance
of lUc In Slay wheat today. Trading late
In the dtiy , not only In wheat , but In other
Kpcculatlvo markets , was the most active
for weeks. Corn and oats advanced Wii
C-Sn and 3-SQ14c respectively. The price
changes In provisions wereunimportant. .
Trade In wildcat started In rather slow ,
though a good deal ot firmness was shown
at the Immediate opening. Liverpool dis
played more steadiness than was expected
after the late show of weakness In yester
day's market here , whllo the receipts at
Minneapolis and Duluth continued to fall
off , the total today being 707 cars , com
pared with 918 lasn week and 524 a year ugo.
Chicago receipts were 172 cars , G of con
tract erade. iiut the firmness disappeared
almost befora trading got fairly started.
1'rlvnto continental cables reported con
stantly Increasing stocks In Russian ports ,
with continued free offerings from Kusuiu.
This ) was ( i source of much weakness here
yesterday and for a short time It had a like
effect today. May opened * A < if3-Kc higher at
( WSfiB 1-Sc. Depressed by the Russian news
the price soon dropped to C5 S-8yC5c. The
market continued rather dull for about an
hour and a half , with the prices hanging
around GB9lc , hut by 11 o'clock trade had
begun to broaden out very materially and
prices to advance with a rapidity that way
somewhat astonishing and displeasing to
bears. The big factor was the condition of
the Argentina crop , which cables reported
very bud. Somu entlmates placed the dam
age an high ns 20 per cent. The llrst
brought nearly all classes of buyers Into
the market. Atlantic port clearances were
heavy enough to be a bull help , the total
being put today at 1,076,000 bushels. There
were prospects for a substantial decrease
In tliu vltdblo supply , which also en
couraged buyers. Exporters were almost
out of the market on account of the car
famine , but the absence of cash business
was hardly noticed by the speculative
crowd. There were many slight reactions
caused by profit-taking , but the market
TVOH llrm to thfl onJ. May advanced to
7 l-8c and closed at ( Jfi 7-8'j } ' < ! 7c.
There was a big trade In corn after wheat
tvent on the rampage. Cables were higher
and receipts were moderate , 4IG cars , but
the market was entirely a sympathetic one ,
following cloBdy the ftuctuatloim on wheat.
Local bull Interests were largo buyers and
there was fair outside buying. May ranged
from 3l'/ic to 35c and closed ftC-Sc higher
at 31 7-SfflKc.
Outs followed wheat and corn. The mar
ket wits rather dull nhno.H up to noon , but
became quite active after that , shorts and
elevator people being good buyers. The
shipping demand was excellent , one llrm
Belling 250,000 bu. for export. Receipts were
3211 cars. May ranged from 2CVif28 ( 3-8c to
20-W2G 7-8c and closed 3-S@ 4e higher at
EG-'Hc.
Provisions vacillated between heavy hog
receipts and strong grain market. A large
business was done. The market was weak
early , all products easing off under free
general selling , but firmed up later as the
grain markets advanced , all the declines
being recovered. There was some realizing
lit times. At the close May pork was EVfcc
higher at J9.C5 , May lard shade lower at
JJ.37',4 nnd May ribs a shade higher at $4.85.
Estimated receipts Friday : Wheat , 125
carp ; corn , 410 cars ; oats , 235 cars ; hogs ,
10,000 head.

CATTLE Today's market was almost
bare of supplies and It seemed rather like
a Saturday's market Instead of a Thura-
day's. Not only were the receipts v ry
light , but of the few cattle here there were
nineteen loads consigned direct to packers
Bo that there was very little on sals. Under
such circumstances It WHS not to b *
wondered at that the market was bare , of
news and gsnerally featureless. Very lltlls
change was to be noted In any direction.
Good cornfed beeves could safely b *
quoted as steady to strong- , but common and
half-fat stuff was slow , ami It i very ap
parent that the only sajtc course for ship
pers is to kcp the unfinished oattle ut
home , as they arc not wanted. As high as
$5.25 was paid for a buncn of good well
llnlshed cattle. Some nice llttlo stuff , not
Very fat , but rood quality , brought (4.79 ,
and the same prloe was paid for blp , coarse ,
but fat steers. Some nudlum weight cattle
not overly good went ut $4.CO. Nqne of these
sales showed quotable ohnnge from yester
day.Tho
The market on cows and belters was at
the best no more than steady , and It would
bo nearer the truth to call It alow , with thft
feeling weak. The supply was so mall ,
however , that a fair teat was not made of
the market. A small bunch of good helfera
brought i3.60 , and some pretty goad cows
J3.50 , and big , heavy cows and heifers
mixed , $3,65. Common cows , wjileh were
hardly more than good canners , sold at
> 2.75'J2.80 , and some common canners at
$2.35.There
There were not enough feeders In sight
to make a test of the market , but It Is safe
to say that they would not have sold any
higher as there Is very little , demand for
cattle of that kind. Representative sales :

HOGS Large receipt * were again the
ruling factor in the hog markets of the
; country , though there was a large falling
off at this point as compared with yester
day. Early reports gave Chicago 50,000
head ; Kansas City , 18.WO hud ; St. Louis ,
S.OuO head ; St. Joseph , 5,000 head , and Sioux
City , 3.000 head. At' some of these points
quite a good many hogs were held over
from yesterday , so that the number on sale
was much larger than the receipts. From
all points came reports of lower prices ,
which had Its Influence upon the market
here , though the receipts at this point
were qulto moderate. Another bear argu
ment which the packers uoed was the fact
that the market here yesterday was very
close to Chicago. For example , thj drove
bought by one of the largest packers in
Chicago yesterday cost J3.37V4. and averaged
214 pounds ; at the same time the average
price of nil the hogs sold hera yesterday
was J3.33. Early metsages to packers from
Chicago reported the bulk of the hogs
selling there , at J3.COft3.35. These points are
mentioned only to show the Influences that
operated to give prices a utlll lower turn
today.
The market at this point opened with
about 160 cars of hogs In sight and one or
two trains reported back. Buyers started
out bidding prices that were generally GW
lOe lower than yesterday , that Is J3.25 for
most everything In the way of heavy or
mixed hogs.
Sellers did not like the bids and held on
hard , making the market slow , so that It
was late bt-foro a clearance was effected.
In the end the hogs sold , but a big DC
lower. Heavy hogs went largely at J3.23.
with loads running to medium weights at
J3.27V4. and good light and light mixed
principally at J3.30. Toward the last the
trarket showed a little more strength , uut
nothing to brag of.
The extreme close was slow and weak , and
It was very difficult to get over J3.23 for
anything.
