Corn Market After
fltronK Opening .
CHICAQO , Dec. 8. Wheat , corn and oats
today joined hands In running down hill ,
the road being greased by the lack of for
eign demand for wheat , by the higher
freight rates and by the prospects of larger
receipts of the coarsi grains. Wheat closed
nt a decline of % o for May and 101 l-8c for
December. Corn declined S-SQ' c , oats Uc
and provisions 2 Q5c.
Wheat opened steady at unchanged prices
for May and a shade higher for December.
Ilvorpool , ut the tlmo trading started here ,
] iad lost a slight opening advance , but
northwestern receipts were considerably
nmaller than last week , although still run
ning over these of last year. This for the
tlmo being held up the liquidation which
became BO prominent , especially In Decem
ber , later In the posslon and gave nn ap
pearance of firmness to the market. May
opening nt C3 B-Sc , was held firm for a few
moments at C3 D-Sij65c. December opened
nt C4'/ic. Minneapolis and Duluth receipt * ,
were S)18 ) cars , compared with 1,368 last week
nnd 815 a year ago. Chicago receipts were
142 cars , seven of contract grade. North
west markets showed steadiness , but New
York developed weakness aoon after the
opening here and thia was taken az > an in
dication of discouraging advices from
abroad. That this supposition was correct
was apparently shown by the vsry
moderate export demand reported later.
Lanes got discouraged nnd soon there was
plenty of wheat for sale from every direc
tion. December suffered the most , liquida
tion In that option taking it to a discount
of 2 cents under May nt one time. The sell
ing of December at times was very heavy.
Atlantic experts of wheat and Hour were
large. 1,270,000 bushels , nnd this fact
nteadlcd the market after May had declined
to 631-MJ63HO and December to 636-Sc. But
there wcro plenty of other bearish Influ
ences , not the least being the weakness
shown by coarse grains , and after the noon
hour the market turned weak again , ror-
elcn crop reports were all favoraolc t.nd
winter wheat In' this country waj reported
In promising condition. Foreign markets
tiere. genarally weak at the close. The ex
port sales were placed at the seaboard at
from twenty to thirty loads and the cash
demand hero was slow. In the last hour
of trading a great deal of wheat was sold
on stop loss orders nnd buying was very
scattered toward the. close. May declined
to 647-8o and closed at that price. De
cember declined to 63c and closed at o3 l-8c.
Corn showed a little strength at the start ,
continued light receipts during favorable
ehlpplng weather having a bullish effect.
But the market very soon turned weak and
remained so to the close. The recent agree
ment to restore eastbound rates tended to
depress prices. The lightness of the cash
demand was alHo a bearish factor. During
the latter part of the session selling be
came very heavy and general , leading bulls
being prominent In ths liquidation. Coun
try advices stated that new corn would
Boon move more freely. Receipts were 2o3
cars. May ranged from 336-8(3345-80 ( and
closed 3-SftHc lower nt 33c.
Oats were weak and lower. The amount
of business done was small and nothing
of Importance developed , the weakness be
ing apparently altogether In lympAthy with
corn. The cash market was steady and
100,000 bushsls were sold hero for shipment
cast. Receipts were 30G cars. May ranged
from 254fi2o ( 7-Sc to 26'/ic and closed Vic
lower at 237-8c.
Provisions had another heavy run of hogs
to contend with , but held remarkably
Btcndy notwithstanding. The market was
strong during the morning , there being
good local support , while outside buying
orders were much more numerous. Realiz
ing and more liberal selling by packers
caused prices to decline later , but the mar
ket at no tlmo showed weaknesp. At the
closj May pork was 2'/4c lower .at $9.40 , May
lard Kc lower at J5.22& nnd May ribs 2V4o
lower at $4.72V& .
Estimated receipts for Friday : Wheat , 145
corn ; oats , 310 cars ; corn , 300 cars ; hogs ,
37,000 head.
Leading futures ranged as follows :

OPERATIONS IN STOCKS AND BONDS.
Quotation * Rcnpond to Influence * to
Advance on London Report * .
NEW YORK , Dec. S.-Quotatlons in the
stock market rose the greater part of the
day , but in the late * dealings lost part of
the early advance , closing easy with slight
gains in most stocks.
The Initial tendency Tas hesitating and
timid , perhaps sympathetically with the. ir-
repular tone of London , which was a mod
erate Roller of Norfolk * Western and
Loulsvlllo & Nashville. The grangers shook
off their recent lethargy and gave confi
dence to the rest of the list. A strong
foreign situation , with Its probable effect
on valura as Interpreted In n widely pub
lished optimistic statement of an operator

not without sontlmental cltect. Reports of
Improvement In both th < > hatd and soft

the property becoming fifnernlly known.
The MMsuurl rt-r'.fic'H recent cancelling of
Its floating Indebtedness was assigned as a
reason for Its rise' . The heavy business or
the Paclflcs in the last hour was not largely
responsible , together with realizations In
other properties , for the recession In values
before the close. The ensy conditions of
the money market furnish abundant evi
dences of the vast amount of capital Beck-

were on a very extensive scale and consid

CATTIiE Today's receipts of cattle were
much lighter than yesterday and of the
number received ther $ were sixteen loads
consigned direct to packers , so that the
actual offerings on the market were small.
The market as a whale was in very fair
condition that Is , everything In the yardi
sold early and at just about steady prices ,
buyers evidently wanting all the cattle that
were here.
There wore only ten or a dozen loads of
fat cattle in when the trade Opened ,
which was hardly enough to make a teat
of the market. The demand was good on
the part of local packers and everything
sold In good season at just about the same
prices as yesterday. A bunch of very greed
Nebraska fed branded cattle sold at J5.20.
Another bunch of fifty-six head of good
yearlings , ten of them heifers , sold to a
packer at $5.15. Soma very fat , but big
and coarse , cattle brought $4.90. These
prloea will Rive an Idea of the kind of
cattle that are bringing the good prices.
The warmed up cattle are bringing any
where , from $1.40 down. Pretty fair killers
are selling at $4.40 and what would be
called in the country pretty good cattle
are selling at $4.65@4.S5. While the prices
are high In comparison to other markets ,
the demand at this point is PO much larger
than the supply that buyers a.re < obliged
to bid up for what they get and even then
cannot secure enough cattle here to keep
their houses running , so that they ara
forced to make up the deficiency and at
the same time cheapen up their droves by
shipping In cattla from Kansas City.
Something Ilka ten or a dozen toads of
cows and heifers were on sale today and
the market was strong and actlv * on good
kinds , so that the earjy arrivals changed
hands very readily. A little while before
midday twenty cars of Ogallala cows ar
rived , so that the total receipts of oows
for the day were large. Pulls and iitags
were just about steady. Veal calvas wcro
lower , good stuff going at $6.0036.75 , as
against $7 for the boat yesterday.
There were not many stockera or feeders
here , but there * w re a great plenty for the
demand. Sellers who had that kind at
cattle yesterday thought the market was
steady at the dec-lino , but those who did
not try the mnrkn yesterday though it
was way lower today. It Is safe to say
that the market la 16c lower for the week
on the genqral run of stock and feeding
cattle. Representative sales :

HOGS The market opened this morning
where It loft off yesterday , that is strong
as compared with yesterday's general mar
ket. Some of the buyers did not get as
many hogs' yesterday as they needed to
till orders , and they were after them this
morning early. Under the Influence of
the very good buying demand the market
was active and everything In the pens
changed hands early. The market rather
Increased in strength toward the close , nnd
the later trains were bought up at the
unloading chutes and at higher prices.
Packing hogs went largely at J3.27V4. with
good heavy and medium weights at 13.30
and good light and light mixed principally
at J3.S2H4f3.35. Yesterday more hogs sold
below J3.27V4 than above , but today the re
verse was true. There were more loads
that brought J3.27W and above , nnd the
average price , as will be noted from the
table of averages above , was a little
higher.
Receipts so far this weak have averaged
larger than for previous weeks , and at
the same time there has been a targe * Tun
of hog * ut other markets , which has been
responsible for some of the loss In values.
At the same time the market today was a
few cents higher than last week and higher
than the market was one year ago at this
time. Representative sales :

SHEEP There Is not much to b2 said
about the market today. The demand
seemed to be just about as good as usual
nnd the market was without material
change in any direction. The most of the
desirable muttons sold nt prices that were
satisfactory. California yearlings and
sheep mixed brought $3.753.80. ( ? and Cali
fornia lamba sold at $4.40. Buyers nnd sell
ers' seemed to differ as to values In nonu
cases BO that it was rather late before a
clearance was effected.
