It would require a great amount of re-
Bcarch and a very close study of existing
conditions to discover any matt rial change
In th business situation as compared with
a week ago. Trade In practically all de
partments has moved along well worn chan
nels without Incident or feature of Impor
tance. The closing of the exposition brought
about certain changes and buslncsi men
ttpocdlly adjusted their affairs to the al-
tired conditions , and since then there hns
been simply the regular round of buying
nnd selling. In a general way retail trade
may be sal'd to be as good as usual at this
ncuRon of the year , with the volume of sales
fully up to expectation * . It will soon b !
time for the holiday trade to make Itself
felt , hut until then no change of .nny Im
portance Is anticipated. Down In th6 whole
sale district everything Is moving along In
a satisfactory way. Jobbers are as busy
as usual at this uason of the year. *
Advance Saddenlr.
There was very little change last week
as regards the volume of business trans
acted by wholesale grocers. The demand
continues actl\c for ull class s of goods
and especially for those lines that are most
popular duilng the holidays. The market
was more steady than usual , the most Im
portant change being the rather sudden ad
vance on all lln s of sugars. A rise of 1-bc
took place the llrst of the week and about
the middle of the week prices went up an
other 1-Sc. The market for raw stocks Is
also considerably hlgner and Indications
are said to b : favorable for still higher
quotation. * .
The cheese market Is about the same as1
it wou a week ago. but October stocks are
reported as being well cleaned up and hold
ers are asking a good , round premium on
VoutK ? Amcr.cas because of this reported
scarcity. Quotations on farinaceous goods
are the same as a week ago , with the ex
ception of oatmeal , which advanced lOc per
| y barrel. The market on canned goods Is
also very firm , hut there were no quotable
changes except In the case of string beans
and oysters , which are from 2 c to Cc per
dozen higher.
There were no very startling developments
last week In the wholesale hardware trade.
The demand Is about the fame ns It has
been for tome tlrne past , which ts saying
that jobbers nre doing a nice business. The
pleasant weather , of course , li somewhat
retarding the movement of winter goods ,
but nil things consld'red , trade conditions
I. are entire ! fatlsfactory. As far as known ,
. price ? are the same as a week ago , with
the general tone of th ? market firm.
Mo t ProiperonB Year.
This Is hardly the busy season with dry
ffoods Jobbers but considering the time of
year they are having a good trade. Now
that the bulk of the year's business Is over
Jobbers are able to make comparisons , and
thoy'sny without hesitation thrtt they have
never experienced a more successful year
than this. Traveling m-n are out with
uprlng goods and reports coming from every
u action of the country between hero and
the Pr-clde Indicate even n bigger trade for
next year. Dealers seem to be more willing
ta give their orders at an early date this
year , which goes to show that they are en
joying a good patronage and feel sure of
their future trade. The market ts flrm nnd
steady on nearly all lines. There nre , of
course , some unimportant fluctuations from
time to time , but nothing that Is worth
mentioning.
There Is not much to be said regarding the
trade In boots and shojs. as little Is being
done , comparatively speaking , at the pres
ent tlmo. The usual number of orders for
odds and ends are being received , but prac
tically all the Important shipments are
over. Traveling men continue to send In
favorable reports from all quarters , whlrh
seem to point to an unusually heavy de
mand during .the coming'year.
Trade In rubbers Is also light , because of
the pleasant weather , but Jobbers say there
Is no doubt but what there will bo an ac
tive demand for all kinds of rubber goods
as soon as stormy weather sets In. Bo far
this fall the volume of business has gone
far ahead of what any one anticipated , so
the general Impression Is that business will
be good throughout the year.
There Is little change reported In the de
mand for lumber In spite of the fat t that
the weather and condition of the roads hnv
both been favorable for building purposes.
Trade for sometime has been n dlsappolnt-
/ ment to all local dealers , and now It Is so
late In the year that scarcMy anyone Is
looking for any Improvement before the
oprlng business opens up. Traveling men
who hnve recently made trips out Into this
and surrounding states report business In a
r'tall way as being dull In nearly all sec
tions. The country merchants who call on
local Jobbers nro also reporting a light de
mand , so It Is not strange the wholesale
trade to not heavy. Retail trade here tn the
city Is also quiet , but In South Omaha thcr-
Is more bulldlne being done nun for several
years past , so that branch of the business Is
entirely satisfactory.
Prult and Produce
The volume of business transacted by
commission men last week was only fair.
Th majority of them report no great
amount of Thanksgiving trade as yet , but
they are a41 looking for n good run of busi
ness this coming week. The m.uktt on
most lines was fairly tteady last week , but
few changes should bo mentioned. In
tropical fruits lemons hav- taken a drop.
California fancy stock being quoted nt J4.00
tf4.50. nnd choice Jl.75 4.00. It Is thought
there will be considerable demand for
Itmons as well as for orange during the
coming week. Several cars of oranges ar ?
expected to arrive In the next day or so.
There will be at least one car of California
navels , which will be the first to arrive
this season , and also several cars from
Mexico ,
Apples wcro In fairly good request last
week , western selling for J3.25&3CO , and
Now Yorks for J3.65W3.75. Thers wus also
quite ft call for cranberries. Hell & Bugles
are quoted at J7.50 and Jerseys at JO.00.
Malagu grapes arc now on the market
and are held at J7.0038.00. New Vork ratnw-
bas are also hero and are selling at 16o uer
bniket.
Nuts nre also growing In popularity , nnd
some advances are reported. Almonds espe
cially are scarce , because of the failure ol
the California crop. They nre now quot iljj
at icync. Filberts are selling for lie , which
Is hlghnr than they have been for some
time. Chestnuts , on the other hand , are i
quoted at SQOc.
Figs nt the prsscnt time are exceedingly
rcarre and correspondingly high. No Im
ported llgs nre to be had and California
uro quoted nt Jl.6001,75.
The butter and egg markets nre the same
ns reported a week ago , Kuelpts of poul
try nro by no means excessive , but com
mission men are In hopes shfppcrs will not
de'ny much longer , as It Is difficult to
handle poultry that arrives after Tuesday. ,
H-ns. live , are selling at 4Hc , and drrsaeJ. ;
ElMfCc. Spring chickens , live , will bring
about EU < ( t6c. nnd dressed. CVifiTc Turkeys
nre quoted at OJilOc for the live ones , and
for the dressed. 10tJ12Vic. There l not much
lornl demand for game , but there Is n nady
Hale for It In eastern markets. Prairie
chickens are held at 15.00 , and quail J1.25 ®
l.SS. There Is a fair request for rabbits ,
jacks going at Jl.EO nnd cottontails at SOjJ90c.

NEW YORK Nov. 19 The mnrket had
the burden of several unfavorable factors

At the opening of the week the sharp fall
In surplus cash and surplus reserve ehown
by Saturday's bank statement wa * a
shadow on thw speculative mind. The known
stringent conditions of the Berlin money
it.arket and the measures tnken for pro-1
tccttng at other financial centers made It
doubtful whether relief could be had
tJiomptly by ( rold Imports In cn o of a local
squeeze , or without sharp competition In
discount rates , In spite of the heavy out
standing balance to the candidates of tlili
country of the world's market. It la highly
significant that the etuler condition of
money in London has been brought about
partly by a resumption of the holding back
of sterling exchange bills , coming forward
to New York fur grain and cotton and with
money In New York distinctively working
toward an easier basis ns the w k ad
vanced even In face of enormous clearing
house operation * .
There was also some uneasiness early In
the week over the belief that a rupture of
peace negotiations at Paris and a pos lble
resumption of hostilities nlth Spain were
Imminent. With the relief from their early
misgivings prices rebounded , the very re
markable movement In Atehlson preferred
loading the market throughout. This ad
vance Is based on the argument that much
of the recent heavy outlay for expenses
has gone toward Improvements nnd better
ments which will prove permanent nnd
whlrh will make possible economics nnd
substantial Increases In net earnings. The
argument has extended beyond Atehlson
and even to the low earning Trunk lines ,
where new equipment Includes steel freight
cars of n capacity of 19,000 pounds , tine
reason assigned for the weakness of North-
crn Pacific also has been the low ratio of
Its operating expenses , which have aroused
fears In some quarters of a stripping of
Northern Pacific ban chiefly suffered ,
however , from the belief that projected 1 ;
new lines In the northwest foreshadow the !
breaking up of the entente cordlale , which 1
. hn existed among railroads In that coun-
, tn . The liquidation In Northern Pacific has '
reha en Influence In checking the general 1
advance In the latter part of the week.
i Thcfc has been a large business In bonds
during the week , though by no means up
to last week's high rfrnrrt. The mnrket
has shown the same Irregularity ns that

was In 1SS2. the time of the flnnnclnl crisis
In Paris. The present rise In the rate Is
due to the denlre to attract large amounts
of pold quickly. As previously told In
these dispatches , German bills to mature
In tha next fortnight are exceptionally }
heavy. Some failures are looked for. but i
nothing rcnlly serious or far-reaching Is i
expected , the position being that Germany
has engaged In no mad speculation , but In
active , sound enterprise In all parts of the
world , only requiring more cash to finance
It thnn It possesses. Gold today was at

NEW YORK. Nov. 19 The week hns been
remarkable In the print cloth market as
having seen larger sales of regular cloths
and other grades now described as "com-
mtttce goods" than any week for several
months. The Advisor } ' committee of the
manufacturers give out no figures , but It
is probable that sales have amounted to
about 400,009 pieces , perhaps more. It la
Bald that regulars have been cold at 2 17-16
cents for November and December delivery
and that goods are easily obtainable at
this price. In staple cottons , locally , there
have been continued large sales of export
goods in brown cottons. The demand shows
no signs of abatement. In bleached cot
tons the market Is more active since the
recent reductions. Bales , however , have
not been up to the expectations of manu-
facturers' agtnts or commission men. Other
staple cotton goods are unchanged , ooars *
colored cottons arc quiet and featureless.

CATTLE Arrivals today were small and
there was hardly enough of anything In the
yards to make n test of the market. Among
thf offerings there wcro a few loads of
cornfed en t tip , some of them Rood enough
to brlnK $3 and J5.05. Such cnttl ! a ? were
offered buyers took , paying abuut the same
prices ns prevailed yesterday. Practically
everything changed hands In good season.
The market on fat cattle has been In vsry
fair condition all this week and this fait
stands out very apparent when comparisons
arc made with other markets. Without any
dcubt this has been the best market on
th river , and buyers go even farther and
Bay that their cattle are costing right up
to Chicago prlfcs. The reason for the mar
ket being In such favorable condition for
the selling Interests la to be found In the
fact that receipts at this point have bten
on an average very light , while there has
been nn active demand from local packers.
The result hns bwn that cattle , If fat and
-affable , were good sellers at prices that
were at the very least steady , with the
gneral tendency of the market stranger.
Cows and heifers were also good sellers
nil tht week and values were well main
tained. Arrivals were small , which , taken
In connection with a good steady demand ,
made It easy for sellers to obtain fully
steady or even e-trong prices. During the
early part of the wcsk thcro wns a good
demand for feeder cowa , which helped the
market.
Veal calves were scarce all the week and
In { rood demand at firm prices. Bulls were
good sellers during the early part of the
.week , but toward the last there seemed to
bo n let up In the demand so that prices
at the clcwe of the week were lower.
tn the feedir division the situation has
not been so favorable. Last week the mar
ket dropped down to a point where buyers
felt that the cattle were worth th money
and orders began arriving freely from the
country. The effect of this , together with
the active speculative demand , was to send
prices up rapidly. The present week opened
with ! values high and with prospects bril
liant for the sellers. The result , however ,
was not pleasing , as there came the natural
reaction the country stopped buying short-
off and trade became very dull. The market
sagged of Its own weight and could tuloly
be quoted 15$25c lower for the week. Fortu
nately for selling Interests the receipts were
moderate or the bottom would have dropped
out entirely. The week closes with a fair
clearance. Representative- :

HOGS This has been a week of large
hog receipts , the total being the largest
for any week In several months. Todays
receipts wcro abgut an average Saturday's
run.
run.Tho
The market opened with a few of the
best loads selling at Ji,3003.S3 , and same
good light at $3.37'A. The heaviest pa kcrs.
however , held back with a very apparent
determination to pound the mnrket. They
wcro bidding generally J3.2503.27V4 and
were ns Indifferent nnd Independent as
buyers can be when It Is the last day of tin
week nnd when they do not feel the need
of supplies. Sellers were not prepared to
make any such concession and fought
strongly against the bcur tactics of the
buyers. The result wus that buyers nnd
sellers were n long tlmo In coming together
on a trading basis. When they did It wns
on the basis of a SJilOc decline from yes
terday's general market , It was very late
before anything like a clearance was ef
fected.
The reason for today's decline wns to be
found In the fact that this market has been
higher thnn other markets all the week ,
as ha been pointed out from day to day ,
and packers were determined to get It
down , no as to bring It In line with other
markets.
This has been the low week of the month
so far In the hog market. The week opened
with a el I Klit falling off In values , dropped
7Vie on Tuesdny recovered about 3o on
Wednesday and Thursday , only to go still
lower at the end of the week. The week
closed with the market ISc lower thnn It
was at the close of the previous week and
at the lowest point touched since the lat
ter part of December , 1S37. Representative

SHEEP There were only a few sheep
here and not much to make a test of tha
market. One thing Is certain nnd that Is
thut values nre wny lower. Fortunately
receipts nt this point hnve been very light
nnd In cnnicquotu-o prices hnvo been h tier
maintained here than nt other selling polnti
still the mnrket Is nil of 2oc lower. That
looks small besides the reported declines of
60ft75a nt Chicago , where It has been
practically Impossible during the Inst two or
three days to sell even desirable stuff owing
to the glut. . .
The Chicago Drovers' Journal says that
the ncciniulntlon of sheep nt that point
for several dnys past reminds ono of the
pnnlrkv markets of ' ! ) ! nnd ' 93. Sheen nnd
Innibs have been selling relatively high and
the usual demoralizing features of fall
markets hnve been absent mill ! lately.
The facts nro that the channels of trade
hnvo been completely choked with dressed
mutton , the price of which In the runt has
tnken ft severe tumble. Arrivals of sheep
nt eastern mnrkets hnve been large nml so
It Is not surprising that there should be
chnngo In the situation at Chicago. Th
Drovers' Journal nlno adds Hint If styeep
misers nre Imprudent enough to flood the
mnrket they may have occasion to bo sorry
The'above Is a good representation of the
facts ns regards eastern markets nnd It Is
therefore not to bo wondered nt thnt tha
mnrket here Is lower , In fact , had receipts
been larger nt this point the decline would
probably hnvo been much greater , but ns
It Is shippers to Pouth Omaha have escaped
without much hnrtn.
