THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : FRIDAY , NOVEMBER 18 , 1898. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL ti Strong Up Until Witbin Half tn Hour of the OloM. SCARE BY SHORTS PUSHES UP DECEMBER Corn and Oat * Are Both Strong niul BIiow Advances , While 1'rn- Tlnloni Clone Slinde , iL . Lower. t CrnCAGO. Nov. 17. Wheat today was strong up to within half an hour oC the clone , when It turned weak anil closed at a trifling decline. The advance was largely In the nature of a scare among December pliorts. but the- local nature ot the strength wu ultimately Impressed on traders. Corn and oat a were strong and cloned 1-SftUo higher. Provisions closed a shade under yesterday's flnal prices. Opening trades In wheat showed slight changes either way from yesterday's clos ing prices. May starting a shade lower at tGc , and December l-8c higher at eS-K ® M 7-Sa The market at once developed con siderable firmness. December again took the lead In this respect , although the. vol ume of trading wan greater In May , It be ing difficult at times to secure December , u.i few operators cared to put out fresh Hhort lines. The general demand for both May and December , coupled with strength nhown by Liverpool , and yesterday's largo export business , alarmed the shorta , and for half an hour or more th market was active. May advanced during this tlmo to fcl 3-8o and December to 67Ui367 3-8c. Lon don reports more- Inquiry for off coast and on passage cargoes , which had Its effect on the strained local situation. Some re- notion then followed. The advances brought out considerable wheat showing rood profits. It was all quickly taken , but rirlces dropped to G c for May and 67c for December. Northwest receipts today wore henvy , Minneapolis and Duluth reporting 1,110 caw , compared with 1,025 last week nnd 918 a year ago. Chicago receipts were 1H1 earn. 10 of contract grade. Total pri mary receipts were 1,445.000 bu. Atlantic port clearances of wheat and flour nmount to 040,000 bu. Milwaukee reported that Armour was preparing to ship 700,000 bu. northern spring wheat from that point to Chicago. During the middle of the nea- Blon the market wan nervous and prices moved up and down rnpldly. December shorts were evidently still apprehensive of trouble on account of the comparatively small Btockn and the freedom with which wheat IH going out of thft country , and that option became so profoundly bullish that May caught some of the same spirit. Bofor * 12:3U : December had advanced to C7' , c , and May to 60 3-8TiCOV4c. In the last forty-five minutes' trading , however , the market experienced a decided reversal Outside markets rw a rule failed to respond to the advance here. Realizing also be came heavy , more * wheat being offered than the market could rapidly absorb nnd yrlces in consequence dropped rapidly. The market was weak toward the close. De cember closed at SSliQGOB-Sc , and May at CS 7-So. Corn was active and strong , but did not maintain beat prices. Country advices were bullish , and the Price Current claimed the recent government crop report unre liable and Inconsistent. Buying was heavy until late In the session , but the closing weakness of wheat affected prices some what. Receipts were 221 cars. May ranged from 335-8(1 to 34c , and closed l-S&/ic hlcher at S3 5-8033- . Oats were firm und higher and a good general trade was done. Outsiders were In the market In Increased numbers. Cash demand wan again excellent. Shorta were large buyeis. Toward the close the mar ket weakened materially und nearly all the advance was lost. Recplpts wen * 224 cars. May ranged from 26 l-Sfo-CSWc to 25 5-S < 325ic , and closed l-8c higher at 253-Sc , Trade In provisions was small. The mar ket In the main was steady , though having interval ! of weakness , duo partly to the bad hog market. Prices were Influenced by the fluctuating In grain. At the close January pork was 2t4c lower at $8.90 , Jan uary lard a shade lower at J4.90ft4.92Vi and January ribs a shade lower at 34.52 % . OPERATION'S IN STOCKS AND OOND9 , Ontnldc Public Continue * to Show aa Intercut In Sccnrltlcn. NEW YORK. Nov. 17. The results of to day's stock market operations were rather Inconclusive , except Insofar as they showed a continued lively Interest on the part of tha outsldo public in securities of all grades. So far as prices are concerned net changes are rather mixed , though the ma jority lire on the side of gains , and thoto in some cases amount to 1 per cent or over. The early period of tie | market shewed the heavy offerings to realize which are at nil times usual In the upward course of a real bull market. But even whllo prices sagged nt some points with tha effort to absorb the offerings , other stocks were mounting upward maintain ing thn undertone of firmness. The notable movement In Atchlnon preferred wan con tinued from the outset , at which time run ning purchases carried the price tip 5-8 per cent. The gain was subsequently ex tended to I'i per rpnt , and the. net gain Is almost a point. There was a heavy du- niand early for Denver preferred , which had be n marked up before iho opening here In London. This stock rose an ex treme 2 point * , and Norfolk & Western preferred I'i polntH. Balllmore & Ohio , Pacific Mall and Internallonal Paper gave tone nlno to the early market , as did an upward bound of S3i points In Metropolitan Street Railroad. Early weakness In To bacco and the reaction In Chicago & Alton from its recent advance had an unsettling effect in the first hour. In the second hour , however , the grangers were taken In hand , nnd Burlington and Rock Island were pushed to the highest prices of the yea * . Borne of the low priced and lately dormant stocks were also brought Into the movement and advanced to a higher lovol. Thcso Included Denver & Rio Grande , St. Louis & Southwestern pre ferred , American Spirits , Chicago & East ern Illinois , Minnesota & St. Louts and SfAndard Distributing. There were con- spiouous advances also In New York Cen tral , Pennsylvania and Canada Southern. St. Paul & Omaha preferred { .old at 170 , an advance of C points , and the highest prlco on record. The late reaction was Induced by the persistent weakness of the Northern Pacific , nnd the uneasiness thus caused In the minds of holders by rumors of discord and a prospective outbreak of hostilities In the northwestern railroads' world. The rommon stock fell to 40"/i and the perferred to 75. Support was ap parently entirely withdrawn from these stocks and heavy blocks were thrown on the market. The aggressive buying of Pee ple's Gas up lo 107H In the late dealings rallied the market nnd made a linn clos ing In Ftplto of the late weakness In Dela ware & Hudson and Sugar. The local money market showed no further harden ing tendency today and the firmness of for eign exchnngo Indicates a resumption of the holding back of bills. The level of the London money market , which declined ap preciably today , Is now BO near that of New York that a stringency In the local money market could find relief in a gold import movement. The bond market showed a recurrence of Its recent strength , yesterday's declines being In part retrieved. Tolal sales t4.040.000. Untied Slales new 4s , coupon , nnd the Cs , coupon , declined U per cent , and the new 4s , registered , 1-S per cent In the bid prlo * . The Evening Post's London financial ca blegram says : Stocks In this market were lifeless today , except Americans , which were Animated on support from New York , from Germany , and by a professional clique here. There was no public buying and the contlnenlal demand wa chiefly for Baltimore & Ohio. Atchlson preferred , Den ver & Bio Grande preferred and Southern Railway preferred. Late In the day Pans and Berlin showed a disposition to sell The professional Interest In Americans In creases here and many jobbers are migrat ing from the Kaffir to the American mar ket. The Kaffir market was no woefully stagnant that a migration Bomewhoro was a necessity from a professional point nt view. Grand Trunk , after a period of dull ness , was strong in the street on Montreal clique buying , The following are the closing quotations of th leading stocks on the New York market today : Atchlaon IC'tl do Pfd . COTTON MARKET. Liverpool Caulc * Indicate a Steadier Undertone. NEW YORK , Nov. 17. The bull faction had the better start In today's cotton mar ket , but made practically no effort to se euro a material advance. Both the spot and the future markets at Liverpool dis played A steadier undertone than antlcl patcd. Private cables reported almost fe verish activity In dry goods circles abroad. Parties In the south telegraphed that ex porters and domestic spinners were having a hard tims in securing the quantities do blred of spot cotton at last prices , owing tea a withdrawal of holders from the markets. Fall River advices Indicated a growing de mand for certain kinds of manufactured goods , yesterday's sales reaching 100,000 pieces. The more active months moved up 2 to 4 points on the llrst call , but soon lost the gain under soiling pressure from the south and abroad. During the balance of the early sutmlon liquidations were narrow nnd lacked particular slgnltlcance. Late In the day there wan a slight rally on demand from the smaller shorts , but at no time was the trading active. The close was steady at a not gain of 1 to 4 points. Spot , dull : middling. 53-Sc. Less than half of the cattle were killers , a large portion of the receipts being made up of stockers and feeders. Th general market might be ? noted as fairly good on killers , but bad on ceding stock. About fourteen loads of cornfed cattle were reported among the fresh receipts , and , while some of the buyers held back and bid lower prices , there was a good buying demand on the part ot other pack ers , so that about everything sold In good season. The prices paid i were not much different from yesterday.- ! ' Some pretty good steers sold at $5.00 , and there were several loads at $4.90 , with some rough cattle as low as $4.40 and $4.45. There were no gross westerns good enough for kill ers , to make a test of the market on that kind of stuff. ' There were some nineteen loads of cows and heifers among the offerings of cattle , which was liberal considering the total i iDer of cattle In the r.ens. The demand was good and'the market active at firm prices , everything changing hands at an early hour. Bulls and stags sold at firm prices. If good , and the same might DC said of veal calves , quite a number of the latter selling ut $6.60. In the stockcr and fttder division the situation was not lo the liking ot sellers. Feeding cattle have not been coming In very fast , but at the same time the de mand Is dull and speculators find It slow work disposing of purchases. This mornIng - Ing speculators were all talking weak and were in no mood to pay very good prices , while the market lacked the support ot country buyers. The result was the market was slow on all kinds and fully 15c lower than Tuesday ; If the cattle happened to been the commonlsh order , era a Httlo undesirable. It was very hard work to unload. In the first place the receipts were the largest of the month to date and the largest of any day since September 15. Of the number re ported In , however , there were some twenty cars consigned direct to packers , still the actual offerings on the market were not much larger than usual. The demand keeps In excess of the receipts all the tlmo so that the market N In a very healthy con dition. Another fact that will bo noted from tables referred to Is that the average price today was the highest slnco Monday und that hogs are now selling In just about the s.inio notches as n year ago , but n. lit tle higher than two years ago. and about the same as three years ugo at this time. Repre sentatives of packing houses were slow about putting In an appearance and the market was a drag from start to finish on all grades. The buyers would take them , but they wanted them lower , In fact lower In most cares than sellers were willing to accept , which made the trade still more of a drag. The cause for this condition of the market was to be found In the very unfavorable situation In eastern markets. As an example of ths condition of eastern markets , here Is what the Chicago Drovers' Journal ha ? to say of the Chicago market yesterday : "With over 20,000 sheep yester day and about 25,000 today , the market was In a badly demoralized condition. Packers claim to have lost money on recent pur chases and seemed determined to recoup today by getting their sheep and lambs at a big reduction. Eastern markets were bad , both for dressed mutton and sheep , hence the calamity today. Packers were so coldly Indifferent tint up to noon nothing was done. Business was at a standstill , for not even bids were made. It would require the serv ices of a prophet to tell how much lower the market would be. " With reports like this coming from Chicago It was not to bo wondered at that the market here was slow and lower. Operators however , appear to believe that the decline Is duo to a tempo rary glut and that there must come a re action when the oversupply In the markets of the country Is cleared up.
