NEW YORK , Nov. IG.-Apparontly tin watchers who liavo been waiting for thi reaction in the market to buy stocks main up their minds that this morning's decllni was the most that could be looked for un der the circumstances and they according ! ] came into the market , In great force urn before the end of the day had wiped , ou the earliest losses almost entirely and cs tabllshcd a higher runco of values that yesterday throughout. Although net gain ! are In nearly all cases confined to frac tions , the extreme rise from the low It the majority of active stocks amounted U 1 per cent or over and the close was actlvi and strong ut the top. Morning losse ; were not made without resistance , notablj Atchlson preferred and Union Pacific. Chi cngo & Northwestern and Omaha aim showed strength before the break , but tin heavy offerings of Northern Pacific stock ! proved too heavy a burden , especially ai London continued disposed to realize It the International securities. The Northeri Paclllcs fell over a point below last nigh and the whole list receded below las night's level. There was some stop losi orders uncovered on the way down , bu orders In commission houses to buy wen encountered In an Increasing amount am the sharp advance In the Northwester ; stocks and Omaha , ranging from li to 3- % turned the whole market upward. The nd vance for the rest of the day was not nn tlrely uninterrupted , but the marke ( strength of International Paper , Sugar , Pa cine Mail. Baltimore & Ohio and a fev other stocks and the enormous demand foi 'Atchlson preferred kept the bull spirit It the ascendancy and encouraged operation ! on the short side. The selling for Londot account also changed to a buying clemani at the lower level. These were for the most part simply arbitrage operation ! based on the disparity between Londoi and New York prices. The session of thi Paris peace conference and the fixing of i date for a future meeting afforded semi relief from apprehensions of a rupturi which have prevailed in London. The fac of the Berlin bourse being closed served t ( check recent large selling of American ie curltles which have come from that quarter tor on account of money stringency. It the local money market , although sterllni exchange held steady and New York ex change at Chicago fell to par , while thi currency movement on balance contlnue < away from New York , the rate for cal money eastd off a fraction toward thi close of the day and the demand for timi money was less active. There are evidence ! of decreased anxiety over the effect of thi Berlin money situation In other llnancla centers. There was a. falling oft In actlvlt ; in. the bond market and heaviness in semi cases in sympathy with stocks , thougl the tone Improved before the close. Tola sales , $4,375.000. United States new 4s coupon , declined 1-8 in the bid price. The Evening Post's London financial ca blegram says : Mr. Chamberlain's speed at Manchester yesterday checked buslnesi In the stock markets here today and thi tone was dull. Americans were heavy they lacked the support of Berlin today it being a holiday in that market. Purii also refrained from buying. Speculation t Slow With Price TendlntC Downward. NEW YORK , Nov. ' 1C. Speculation In col ton futures was again slow today , and flu < tuatlons usually narrow , with a gencrc tendency downward. For a time around th opening trading was jnodcrately active , bti with the exception of early orders and ever Ing up of accounts by some of the less cor ildent room operators , business dwindle down to a scattered scalping trade. Unde bearish reports from the Liverpool futur market , indicating that the crop movemen for the day would bo a heavy one , und spurt of selling ( chiefly foreign ) prices wen off 1 to 2 points on the first call nnd subsc fluently 2 to 3 points further. The declln was then arrested by the appearance o limited buying orders , and for the rest o the day the scopd of fluctuations was enl a matter of 2 points. Notwithstanding th successes of yesterday and lower level re ported today even the more stalwart bear hesitated to pound tlu market , the restrain ing Influence being reports and rumors tha u largo business was doing in spot cotto throughout the south at a shade bette priors. A largi proportion of the receipts consisted of kill ers , with only a moderate sprinkling o feeding and stock cattle. The market on all kinds of killing cattl was fairly active and fully steady , so tha the yards were cleared In good season That was true of cornfed steers as well a : cows , heifers and rough stock. Buyer representing local packing houses all ap penred to have liberal orders , and then were none too many cattle here to till thi requirements. Cornfed. steers sold Inrgclj at $4.55 4.80. the bulk of the offerings belnj of the quality to fall within that range Ihero were , however , some cattle gooc enough to bring $1.90 5.00 , but there win nothing to compare with the $5.20 cattle o yesterday. Cow stuff sold the same at yesterday , that Is , nil the way from $2.5 < to $3.50 , according to quality. The fresh receipts of stackers and feed era WHS not so very largo today , but then were qulto a good many cuttle in the handi of speculators , so that the total suppU was quite liberal after all. Yesterdaj speculators experienced a light country tie mand , and again this morning there die not appear to be many outside buyers It the yards. Accordingly , speculative buylnt was of a very cautious character , nnd thi market was not only slow but lower from the luck of a good buying demand. Hold crs found It very difficult in unloading especially if the cattle were not partlculatb desirable. It was almost Impossible to gel a buyer to look at common cattle. Th ( result was that it was very late- before anything like a clearance was effected. II would appear that the reports of the stlfl advance in the market sent out into th < country has discouraged buyers from com ing in at u time when the country demanc was none too brisk at the best , and thai the market is in consequence experiencing a natural reaction. Other markets reported a' break In values on mutton grades * but owing to the very good demand and moderate offerings the trade at this point opened active and fully steady. Mexican yearlings , which have been selling for some little time back at $4.45 and $4,55 , brought $4.45 today. Good western wethers brought $1.25 , which was fully steady. As an example of what really cholco stuff will bring , some fancy natlvo lambs sold at $5.75 , ewes out of the same lot nt $4.25 nnd wethers at $4.75. Th3 market on stackers and feeders was In a condition far from satisfactory to the sellers. A good many of the offerings con sisted of old ewes and for that kind there did not seem to be any demand to speak of. Even on pretty fair stuff the trade was slow and sellers found It hard work to un- Icnd holdings. The market closed mean on all kinds. The United State * ug Wampatuck has sailed for Newport. mder orders to tow the disabled cruiser Juffalo to the Brooklyn navy yard. An officer > f the yard inferred from the action of the lepartmcnt that the ship was Injured et ernally. He thought , and several other ifllcers agreed with him. that something vas the matter with the sea valves. Ho ; xp1atncd that the vessel , if InjuVcd Intor- lally , would probably be towed to the Bos on navy yard and repaired there. The 'act that it is to be taken to the Brooklyn iavy yard was considered as evidence that t was to be dry docked. When the Buffalo lallcd it was lying very low in the water. U junkers were full of coal and a largo quan- ity of stores for Admiral Dewoy'g squadron. t will have to discharge a large part of Itn : argo before it can be floated Into the dock.
