DAWSON A GREAT DOG TOWN.
How a Canine of the Hull Variety
Wax Initiated.
Dawson is the greatest dog town on earth
and the canines know their worth. Tha
miner can do little without" them in winter ,
relates the Seattle Post , and Is more willing
to feed them well through the summer lor
their services during the cold winters. Con
sequently the Eskimo Is extremely well kept
and has great pride. This the well-nurtured
pups that have been taken gold hunting
know to their sorrow. Every one has suf
fered a scvero.drubbing almost Immediately
on arrival nnd were lucky to get off with
ono. After that the native dogs , with an air
of toleration , allow them to live.
Civilized canines by the hundred eub-
mltted to this Initiation and Buffered In
alienee. It was only a few weeks ago that
a mllk-whlto bulldog was Imported into the
famous camp and did a little Initiating on
his own account. When Al Bartlett , the
speedy packer and rich mlno owner , was In
New York he got hold of n Bowery produc
tion that was a wonder. The beast was milk
while with great red eyes and massive Jaws
which had won him more than ono hard
fight.
After landing from a little up-river
steamer Bartlett started up the water front
with the ugly bulldog close at his heels.
Down the street came an old Eskimo dog ,
fairly -bristling for a fight. Hero was a
chance for a conquest. He had never been
against a bullCog before. The fish-red native
fairly rushed Into the fight , but found the
milk white bulldog more than ready to go to
work. It was a great fight and soon over wl h.
The bulldog , finding he had something easy ,
changed holds a dozen times and with every
change brought out the bright red blood , In
two minutes the native sulked up the street
hardly able to walk. But the bulldog had
not finished yet , for the Dawson doga are full
of resource.
From away up the street came the mem
bers of the clan with the defeated member
trotting along on three legs at their head.
They howled with delight when they caught
sight of their prey. The bulldog made one
grab , catching the wounded leader by the
throat. After that ho could do nothing but
hold on. A dozen dogs grabbed him and
dragged him about as if he had been a bone.
The fight ended as all fights do. The
Eskimo dog which had been looking for
trouble was dead. The bulldog was a de p
crimson nnd most of the dye was furnished
by his own blood. He had the partial UBO
of three legs , one eye was almost closed and
his close-cropped ear was cropped closer
still. Tha bull had made dog history at
DawEOu , but at a terrible cost to himself.
"For Dawson doga are clannish and it
your dog licks ono he's got to lick hU clan , "
as Al Bartlett says In talking about tha
fight.
