Our advices show the certain election of 183
republicans/- more than enough to gl\ >

the Seventh In California ; the Third , Foul-til ,

clear majority and are resting perfectly

"Tho Sixth Iowa , \ > hlch was * In doubt for
a time , has certainly elected Representative
Lacey , republican. In Kentucky we have
elected not only Seltz In the Tenth dis

we have a solid delegation- although It was
not until thla evening that we put Klrk-
patrlck of the Third district In the certain
republican column. In Maryland we con
cede the defeat of Jackson In the First dis
trict and Mclntyro In the Fourth. Minnesota
seta returns a sotld republican delegation ,
Judge Morris having defeated Charles
Towno In' the Sixth district. In Masaachtf-
setts wo concede ( he election of democrats
In the Third , Ninth and Tenth districts.
According to our advices the delegation
from Now York Will stand fifteen republicans
to nineteen democrats. In North Carolina
wo claim the cleoUon of White In the Sec-
bnd district and Llnney In the Eighth , but
wo may he countejl out In both ot them.
In Pennsylvania the delegation stands
twenty republican's , 'seven democrat's and
thrco doubtful ; Texas , -one republican ,
eleven democrats , one doubtful In the
Twelfth district , nnd in West Virginia we
carried the First , Second and Fourth dis
tricts , whllo the opposition carried the
Third.
"From our viewpoint that Is the situation
an It stands tonight. I fuUy believe that
the returns we shall receive tomorrow will
increase the ftgurcc I have made. "
At the headquarters of the democratic
congressional committee confidence Is ex

number of districts It will require the olll-

"It seems certain , " said Secretary Kcrr
to a representative of the Associated Press ,
"that wo have elected 183 members of the
next house , the republicans 163 and that
eleven districts are In doubt. "

Plurality of l-lr UU.
INDIANAPOLIS , Nov. 9. The republicans
have carried Indiana by a mnjorlty of be
tween 15,000 nnd 20,000. Chairman Martin
I of the democratic stale committee , figuring
, tonight upon official and estimated returns
, from all but three of the ninety-two co ntlea ,
I conceded a republican plurality of 14",500.
He says , upon the returns at hand , that the
democrats have made a net gain over the
presidential vote of 1896 of 1,862. Later and
authentic returns , however , may change the
present Indicated result from 2,000 to 3.000.
The republicans claim the state by 20,000.
Tha legislature will be republican and the
j estimate , based upon > the latest returns ,
ehows that In tho. senate the republicans will
have tucnty-olght and the democrats
twenty-two ; In the lower house the repub
licans will hava flfty-alx and the democrats
forty-four. This will give the republicans a
majority of eighteen on Joint ballot and
means the election of a republican to the
United States senate to succeed Mr. Turplo.
The offlclal returns from all over the state
miy change these figures some , but It Is
n result that both parties have practically
agreed Is true.
The vote In Indiana will fall far short of
the vote In 1890 and the returns are coming
In slower than they ever did before In the
history of Indiana elections.
