C1IICACJO. Oct. 27. Disappointingly small export tr-ulo today dissipated nit early hhoxv of strength In wheat. December lft l off at ilecllnc. Corn advanced Uc. xvaw unchanged and pork closed 7',4u lower. Wheat started tame and during the early part of the day had nothing to Htlr It Into more than moderate activity , llow- ovcr , the firmness of the cauli markets In the northxvest and a recovery at Liver pool resulting In 'id ndvanru fur the day Imhucd the crowd hero with u desire for the buying side. They accordingly pursued a bull polloy during the. forenoon , but In a conservative way taking inodrrato quantl- lies on the soft spots. English consols opened D-IG per cent higher and made a further 1-S per runt advance , retaining nil of It ut the rlosc. This peaceful Indication about balanced smaller domestic receipts and the closing firmness of the Liverpool market. It was rnmorrd that Ilfty loads of wheat had been taken at New York for Europe. Hroomhall cabled that the I > anublan countries hud not secured thn Rood wheat crop credited to them rurller In the season , saying It was now acknowl edged to be 20 per cent below an average. i 'hlcago receipts wre 300 cavs , against 1S5 expected. and .Minneapolis and Duluth ri1- ixirtcd 760 cars , compared with W7 the H.imfj day last week and 939 n year ago. Paris reported a d- - rllno In flour of from lOftSoc. The bulls we.ike.ned near the end and bears persisted In Belling on all hard spots. New York telegrams did not come In near the close an they have been doing nC Lite , with . lalms of an Immense export business , but reported only the lltty loadb rumored arly In thn day. All that was capable of being confirmed was twenty-two boatloads of which Bcvniitccn were for Spall. . Uf- cember opened Vic lower at d ! T-Sli t7c ! sell- rs. declined to Gijfi-Sc , rallied to t'Wn 7 5-sc , then dropped buck near the end to near Cii-V. and closed at that bid. Light receipts and continued complaints of the poor condition resulting from the recent damp weather strengthened rorn. Htrong cables were also a consideration , and the foreign demand for corn us re- jiorted from the seaboard , was urgent. Largo Interests favored the buying side n nil prices shoued a good advance the i.-rtatcr part of the day. The weak cloning of thu wheat market , however , caused a weakness In corn tind the advance was nearly all lost. Hei'elplH were 204 cars. OIM3IIATt V < S-l'tlCKsTAMl HOXUS. Tiilinero nnil Simiir the l.cndri' ! * In Point of ArlUltj. NEW YORK , Oct. 27.-Thc stock market showed a continuation of yesterday's strength today and the speculative activity broadened out considerably In addition. There was not quite such u congestion of trading In Tobacco nnd Sugar , although those stocks continued to be the leaders In point of activity. They were traded In nearly nil day at a level below yesterday s close , though each stock advanced slightly above yesterday' * price for a brief lntrviu. The buying of shorts , which caused yes terday's rise In Sugar , left that stock weak again , and thu extreme decline from the high point was " 'J. A rally at th clo e left the net loss 1J1. Tobacco was nmU'r piec'tire on the supposition that the re- K-ntly Incorporated company is destined to be a powerful competitor , and on de nials of accessions to the American com pany of outside plug tobacco roinpnnle.-i. The stock was at inti' time off 2-'i , but clrscd with u small net gain. In railroad securities the continued dull ness nnd hesitation on foreign exchanges were without effect. There was a large de mand for quite an extensive list ot rail- mad storks , the grangers leading with l.retty much all the western and southwest ern roads showing a good tone. The east ern trunk lines continued to las on account of the admittedly bad rate situation In that territory , which nullllles the benellt of the exceptionally largo tonnage which Is being moved. St. Paul was the leader In tlu : railroad list and the movement of the stork wan suppo.aed to foreshadow a good Sep tember statement , duo tomorrow. The gloss increase of that period In earnings Is known to lie well on toward $50ii,000 , and it is surmised that the statement will show a reduction In the recrnt heavy rate ? of expenditures for Improvements charged to operating expenses. Tlie September statement of the Union Paclllc , whllo showing a decrease of over 5llXiO ( In gross earnings , showed operating expenses so largely reduced as to leave an Increase In surplus earnings of $112,531. The delayed movement of cotton now com ing forward and the decrease of yellow fever foreshadow good earnings for south ern and southwestern railroad ? . The easier tone today of sterling exchange was the dltect result of the calmer feeling In Paris. There was a heavy demand for sterling exchange here yesterday for Paris account , which sprang from the same cause which lifted exchange on London In Paris above the gold export point , namely , tin1 pressure to transfer funds front Paris to London. It Is now known also that the recovery In Uritlsh consols was partly due to buying for account of timid Paris capi tal because of domestic disquiet nnd not altogether to the rillef of the Anglo-French tension over Fnshoda. Thiro was a good absorption of railroad bond. " today nnd prices arc generally higher. Total sales $3.4M > , OUO. United State * new 4 ? , coupon , declined 'i ; Unltrd States 4s , registered , 1-8. while the 3s , registered , advanced 1-S in the bid price. The Evening Post's London financial ca- grarn says : "The cheerful tone in the stock markets hero at the close yesterday was maintained today. The rise was mo-it marked In Americans and In Kulllrs. the foirner closing quiet at tno best , chlelly on New York support. The ono small failure nt the settlement today Is of no signifi cance , but the recovery In prices in timely , ns there arc some weak spots. Consols closed under the best nnd should there be any ren wal or political alarms there IP now only a small bear account to support prices. The best Informed operators in tit'1 city do not consider the Fushoda question as settled yet. The very .sharp drop in Paris exchange today is partly attributed to the completion of payments due from French Interests in connection with tin Stock exchange settlement. Russian ex change Is rising nnd sterling exchange at Vienna also advanced today. . . . . tn. . . rtlnri .ire the closing quotations of the leading stocks on the New York market todar : Atchlson 12-Li ilo pM . ta > ; ilo pfc ] SO do 2U pM . ? This morning when the market opened there was less than halt of the day's receipts In the yards , tno balance being still back , with no Indication whether It would reach the yards in time for the day's market or not. For several weeks there has been mor& or less trouble from that cause , but it was expected that the difficulty would soon be remedied. In stead of that the trains are coming still Inter. The railroad companies have now fallen into the habit of letting anything and everything Interfere with the running or stock trains and It will take a good many vigorous | TotJls to got things to running smoothly again. As it is shippers are los ing neavlly bv the delay In getting their stock to market. CATTLE The market opened with only sixty cars of cattle In sight , but witli sixty- eight reported back. As will be observed from the table of receipts at head of column , the Arrivals so far this werk have fallen very much below the record of previous weeks. There were not far from eighteen loads of cornfcd cattle In the yard , which was not enough to Influence values either one way or the other. Still , the fat cattle mar ket at Chicago and Kansas City has been In such bad shape that values here have been going downward steadily. At the present time It Is safe to say that medium kinds of catttlo are all of 25c lower than last week , and in some cases possibly 30c. Buyers seem determined to get the market down at ail points , and the trade is ac cordingly slow and unsatisfactory. AccordIng - Ing to all advices the market here is no worse than at other selling points , In fact , If anything , cnttls are sellllng to better advantage hero than on most any other market. While cornfed cattle show such a heavy djcllno for thn week grnsa cattle art not much different from what they wcro at the beginning of the week , as supplies ol that kind have been email at all selling points , while the demand has been good. The cow market was lower yesterday , and whllo it may have been nearly steady to. day , U certainly was no higher. As hat ben the case with cornffd steers , cows and heifers have been going lower the lasl few days , and the market Is now 15@25c lower than last week. Some fancy yearlings sold today at f3 , but that only shows what really choice stuff will bring , and Is no criterion of tlu market. The general trade on stockers and feeders was very slow again today , will ! prices 13S25c lower than Inst week. During the early part of th ? week speculators held up the market OR well as they were able , as a matter of self-protection , as they all had a good many cattle on hand. As the wteli draws to a. close they arc not likely tc buy as freely and very llttlo life or strength IK to bo exported In the trade. Rcpresfnta- tlve sales : STEERS. No. Av. Pp. No. Av. 1'r. No. Av. SHEEP Today s receipts were small us compared with the large run of yesterday. In fact the total for the week to date shows a considerable falling off ns compared with previous weeks. Advices from other sellIng - Ing points were far from encouraging , as early reports generally Indicated lower values. Still the demand at this point was of very fair proportions , and as tne offer ings of desirable muttons were rather small the market here was fully steady. Some would say that the. market was a llttlo stronger on the ground that some of the same wethers that sold for ? 4.2o yester day brought $1.3(1 ( today. Some pretty fair lambs sold at $5.25 , and all thu desirable killers wore , cleaned up In good season. The market on feeders and stockers WHS without notable change. It is a fact , how ever , that s-onie of the common and trashy stuff that is arriving IB not moving off any too fast , but really desirable feeders are good sellers at fully steady prices.
