CHICAGO. Oct. 21. Though the disap
pearance of the nuropcan war scare was
the ostensible , leading Inllucnco In wheat
today , the notion of the nmrket here Indi
cated that the trade hud been pretty well
wator-loKEed by the enormous iUintllles | !
sold ilurlnc the last few duys. Prices
slumped sharply near tlm end. December
wheat cloned Hlo lower , ccirn lost Ifll 1-Sc ,
nals declined Vjc and pork , lard and ribs
each left off lOc lower.
The disappearance of the European war
rumors and cable advices that the conll-
wntttl markolB were entirely Indifferent to
the excitement raised yesterday caused a
concession in the Inflated prices of wheat
here at the oiKiiilnt ; . English consols had
ilso recovered ycsterduy's decline and
wheat ut Liverpool closed 1 l-XffjMirt lower
than last nl ht. With such an array of
renditions confronting them even the most
radical bulls considered It prudent to at
least wait lor a reaction In prlci-s. The
fact that the northwest receipts amounted
to l.llto carloads , as compared with S52 for
the corresponding day lust year , anil the
total primary market arrivals were liberal ,
lid not Increase the bulls' courageNev -
rthclcss , the seaboard reported export bus-
mess early and had the total up to sev
enty boatloads long before noon. In addi
tion to that there were sales here of 2u/ >
l > u. cash wheat at the lower level of prlccH
and the northwest weather news was dis
quiet Ing on account of the serious damage
to the crop In Manitoba. Export cleartngs
Irotn the Atlantic ports were co.ua ! to oill-
000 bu. and Chicago receipts only amounted
10 237 cars , uga.nst 2I7 for the same day
last week. Primary receipts were 1.3S5.0UO
bu . against 1,0)1,000 ) bu. a year ago , and the
third was counting on an Increase of 1,500.-
i/oo / bu. for the week In the visible supply.
There was a good general trade and It was
under those conditions that December
wheat , which opened 'UTflc lower at GTiif
CTUc , rinsed bctwtv-n CC 7-Sc to C7'4c during
thn forenoon , with the price most of the
time at G7'.iC. ' As the session ticarcd the
rlosp It was evident that the offerings of
thf last two days were more than the mar
ket could absorb and December sold oft to
KG B-Sc and closed at tti'ie. May kept pre
cisely Ic premium and closed at C7)4c. ; )
Hotter weather , lower cables and a dis
appearance of the , Nile Incident counted
ugalnst corn at the start. There was gen
erous selling of long corn by large Inter
ests and despite heavy covering by shorrx
there was quite a backset In prices. Kau
nas City told of liberal acceptances of
round lots of cash corn there by foreign
buyers , but that was Ignored entirely and
prices were hammered down and the mar
ket closed weak near the bottom. Decem
ber opened H&o-kc | Ower at 32ft32lic , du-
llneO to 31V4c and closed at aUVJjJl 5-8c ,
HOllfS.
Oats weakened with the other grain mar
kets and on Inlluentlal sell.ng both to take
prollts and for thu short account. May bo-
Kan 1-SJHic lower at 24Vi < ft24 3-3c , declined
to 23 7-Sc , then rallied to 2lc , thn closing
llrrure.
Large receipts of hogs everywhere , the
weakness In grains and liberal sales by
Kngllsh houses , especially of lard , un
favorably affected provisions. Neverthe
less the market absorbed the offerings bet
ter than was the case In the grains and
the price did not suffer so badly. A weak
turn In the grain market at the close sent
the provision market down to the lowest
ilguro of the session. January pork
opened W2c down at J9.20 , advanced to J9.30 ,
then dropped to $ D.22Vi. buyers , at the
ilosoj January lard began 5c lower at
.12'/- and held steady at that figure ; Jan
uary ribs started EC oft at ? 4.S2Vj and sold
off to J1.771 * , buyers , at the close *

NE\V YOIIK , Oct. 21.-Th motor nerve of
the world's miukets was touched today by
the reported orders of the Government of
France to Major Marchaml to retlro from
Fashoda. There was a prompt recovery In
government securities In London nnd Paris
and Incorporate stocks at all foreign mar-
KOl.H.
1'or the same reason there was a weakenIng -
Ing n the wheat markets of the world. In
cluding Liverpool , New York , Chicago an.l
San From Iseo. This checked yesterday s
advance In the stock market. IJut when It
became evident later In the day that there
was good Huppart In Ihe wheat market from
a continued heavy demand for export , In
spite of the subsldenco of the war scnro
and of the continued heavy receipts at the
primary po.nls , there sprang up the dema id
for railroad stocks , which showed Itself
more contldent nnd urgent than anything
that has been seen In the stock market for
several days. Naturally thuru was a de
mand for the stocks of grain-carrying
roads. 'I he strenglh was manifest ivot only
In Ihe granger group proper , but UFO In
Iho Pailtlcs , Including Northern , Union and
AU-hlson. The prefeired sto k of the latter
road was next lo St. Paul , the leader ot the
railroads In point of activity and was llrm
throughout the day. The absorption of the.
stock In the late dealings was on a very
large scale. The dullm ss and heaviness of
the stocks of Ihe great eastern trunk lines
was In slrong contrast , although , according
to a quulid utterance of the chairman of
the New York Central directors , many
companies cannot get cars enough to cairy
the freight coming forward , but are cutting
rates and making contracts ahead nt fig
ures below the rale schedule. It is In line
with this view to find the gross earnings of
the Central for September quarter falling
nearly $9Gnooo below those for the corresponding
spending quarter lost year whlto the bal
ance available for dividend Is 155-100 per
cenl , compared with 170-100 per cent last
year.
The strength of western , southwestern
and southern stocks was quite general ,
Louisville lending Ihe taller group with an
extreme rls < > of a point. Tln > movement of
the Industrial specialties was relatively
much less Important than of late. Tobacco
advanced an extreme 3 points , but met
heavy sales. Sugar was raided below 111 ,
but met the resisting point , and Manhattan ,
though It weakened early on published ut
terances tending to discredit reporls ot
early tleclrl al equipment. Inter rose over a
point. Slerllng exchange advanced lurlhcr
today , In response to the stiffness of foreign
money markets , while the clearing political
prospects did not relieve the situation , but
the local money market continued easy.
The gain of the New York bunks from
gold Imports , from the aiibtrcasury and by
reason of the marked decrease In the move
ment of currency to the Interior , Is esti
mated to be not far from $10000,000 for the
week. How far the reserve requirements
hiivu been expanded through enlarged de
posits by reason of loans made on sterling
exchange cannot be closely estimated , but
it may run as high as $15,000.000.
The bond market broadened and Improved
In the course of Ihe day and shows gains
generally. Tolal pales , $2niO,000. United
States 2s registered advanced Vb and the Oa
registered doi lined U In the bid price.
The Evening Post's London financial
cablegram says : There was a general re
covery In the stock market here today on
the more cheerful views regarding the
Fushoda question and the steadiness of the
Paris bourse. The best prices were not
maintained , however , and the close was
somewhat dull. Americans were distinctly
the firmest market , arbitrage houses being
short of slock , but the New York selling
llnally caused a dull close , The New \orlc

NEW YOnK , Oct. 21. There was a cen
tering of Interesl today In the dry goods
market in print cloth situation. Tno news
from Fall River of the completion of the
agreement for lhr > curtailment of output and
trustees for the sale of the surplus s'tocks of
Ihe mills has added stability to the general
market for < otton coon's. There was a g'-u-
erally better feeling In quarters where
slaple goods were handled. Uuyers In Ihe
market today were nol prepared lo be more
liberal In their offers than they have been
heretofore. In Jobbing stores the business
passing was of about an nveragu character.
There wan little Interest manifested by buy
ers In a local market and the mall orders
were light. Silks were strong us a result of
the auction bale of yesterday , where better
p-lces prevailed than were expeoled by semi !
operators. Heports from F.ill Illver ar
xuch as tend to make the markets stronger.
There are plenty of blrls for extras at -
cents , and so far manufacturers are ready
sellers at thai quotation.

CATTLE The receipts were Hit. nil , nut ,
, 'as ' has been the case all the wsek with
| the trains , many of lliern were lule in
j arriving and il was sllll later when the
1 cattle were In the yards , so that the market
, was dslayed and the forenoon was well ad-
vanceil before very much business was
transacted ,
The market on killing cattle , both corn-
fed and grassers , was just about .ile.nly
wllh yesterday. The supply , however , of
I cornfeds was very much lighter , but tlicru
I was one bunch good enough to brliiK J5.U5.
The market on cornfed cuttle Is a little
stronger than last week , and on good kinds
at least lOc higher. Grass beef cattle have
I be n In good demand and moderate supply
i nil the week and values on desirable kinds
have been fully maintained.
The market on cows and heifers - > \as a
little slow today and buyers were late In
getting down to business. There has not
been much change In Ihe cow market this
week , still the decline on fodder * naturally
causes a falling off In the d > mand for cows
for that purpose and the lack of competi
tion from lhat source docs not help matters
any. Yesterday nil but the most dislrablo
kind ? were weak , and the same condition
fciemed to prevail today.
The yards wore crammed full of feeders
again today. In addition to the fresh
arrivals there were over 3,0(0 stale cattle
In the yanls , the most of them stackers nnd
feeders. The market was very slow and
weak , as sptculators were Blow about un-
dlng to their holdings with the week so
1 near an end. It was not only a qntptlon
| of low prices , but It was the question of
I selling them it all that most preplexed
I holders. The fancy grnd'S of cattle are
'possibly ' not over lOfilac lower , but the
'general run of feeding cattle are all of
25c lower than last week , and common
kinds are anywhere from 23c lo 35c lower
limn a we-k ago. This decline Is not due
to excessive receipt1 , but to thn condition
of th. weather. While the feed lots are
under water and the wcath T threatening
farmers do not feel like coming to market
to buy feeders. With thu farmers staying
at homti the cattle have be n allowed to
accumulate In the yards , with the result
that price ? have broken badly. Some
shrewd buyers are coming In and getting
ehfap fe = dlng und stock cattle , and the
only wonder Is that more people desiring
1 cattle have not come In since the market
has been reported as being lower for
1 several days. Representative

SHEEP At tnc opening of the market
this morning there were only four fresh
loads Iu the yards , which lookt-d small , as
compared with the large rtcclpts of
pru.Mous days. The. market did not show-
any very great change , ns compared with
yesterday , valuen being just about steady
and the demand zood.
The market has hern In good condition
all this week. Owing to the small sup
ply of mutton Fheep the tendency of tile
market hns been upward , and It Is safe to
say that values are 10 15c higher thnn a
week ago on the beat grades. Mutlon
lambs were lower during the early part
of the week , but there is now a little more
firmness manifest In the. market , and a
right peed bunch of lambs today would
probably have brought as much as a weak
"Good feeders nnd lambs have been In
active demand all the week , In spite of th
unfavorable weather , which has undoubt
edly kept many would-be buyers away
from the yards , and values have been woil
maintained , At the same time there have
been n srood many common little lambs
that were not desirable , and a coed many
old and thin ewes that were rather hard
to sell. For that reason the feeding stock
hns not beun kept an well cleared up an
during mont weeks this fall , but for the
mofet part It has been only the trash that
has been carried over from day to day.
