Reports of serious dumago to thu wheat crop In Argentina. j > ut the bears In full retreat today ami induced such general covering of the short Hales provlously made that prices \\tsie Hdvanccd sharply. Oeefrnlicr closed half a j cent higher , corn gained 'i S-Sc , oatw nro 1 up 'tic , pork left oft 2'io higher , und Jnrd j und ribs gained Co each. An tidvanco of H/13-3d / at Liverpool over night , the. icported concentration of a. Jargs body of Russian troops at i'ekln , in dddttlon to reports from Now York that there wcro 42 boatloads engaged for ' .x- lie t , stirred up tha market for wheat and made a strong and lively affair of It. Thu Htormy weather In the northwest was tin i uddltlomtl Inlluenee. It soon developed , ) iowovcr , that In tha face of this Informa tion the people were selling. Then came a denial of Urn export business ut the sea board and th ro were reports also that irho exporting llrms wore undeniably tnk- Jng prollts on long wheat. The actual ex port clearings were not up to the usual Jilgh total and the primary market receipts Indicated that a big export business could be supplied and leave it surplus here be- nldes. Though thu bulls reinforced their early battle with reports of large. Hour nalcs In the. northwest und told of a snow Hlorm In North Dakota , trade was Inclined to wait until noon to see what thu Increano In the vlnlhlc would be. The early sulen caused a decline of S-Sftl&u. llradstreet'8 report Indicated an lucreasu Hlnco two weeks ago of 4,737 , ( X ) bu. In the world's visible supply , which was ubout 40 per cent of the amount expected and caused a rally ofj'Uftc. ' . The total vflmary receipts at the principal western markets amounted to 1 , 19,000 bu. Re- jjorta of serious frost damage to wheat Jn Argentina , gave the nmrkst Hear the close cnilto a littlestrength. . Tliero wn a considerable , short Interest and the shorts were rather uneasy about standing out over thtf Jubilee tomorrow. The shorts bought wheat with such freedom that le- cembor was advanced to C3o and closed lit 6S5-8i26ric , buyers. The strength developed by corn at the utart was duo largely to a sharp advance nt Liverpool. The storms also proved to rhock arrivals und gave the bulls a chance ito operate wtlh courage. There was con- Hldorablo professional buying ut the out- nt , but It was mot with offerings by scat tered holders and by brokers and commls- nlon firms which presumably represented pluvntor Interests. That , together with thn docllno In wheat , caused a reaction and ihe torly high points were not fully main tained. The estimate of only 450 cars acted ns an offsetting Inlluonce. December be- . Ban unchanged at 3P.4fr3ir.-8 , advanced to K1HS317-8o and closed at 3lB-Sy31c , buy- tors. There wag quite a largo trade In oats nt higher prices. The demand was urgent at the beginning , but later in the day nulte a few of the early buyers turned nellors and caused the market to lose jiearly all of the advance. There was an active cash demand , however , and prices wore near the top at the end. Receipts , K30 cars. May started l-8o up at 23jifo > SS7-Sc , rose to 2lc and reacted to 237-Sc und closed at 237-SS24c. Provisions opened nrm in sympathy with grains , despite an easier hog market and large receipts here and elsewhere. l-aler In the session , when grains began to rally nnd when It became , known that there was a largo demand for cash ribs , there n-as a rally In the whole Hat. January pork opcntd unchanged at $9.1iV4. rose to 13.20 , sold off to $9.12',4 , then recovered to 9.20. the closing llgures. The range. In lard and rlbB was lnconsenuentl.il. Market .SliiKiinnt nml SliiKKl li I.lmlteil lliiylnu. NEW YORK. Oct. IS.-Prlccs of stocks drifted Elugnlshly and to all appearances aimlessly all through today's session. The almost stagnant condition of the market was scarcely relieved by a single feature. Even the "trust" stocks fell into neglect after a long period of erratic fluctuations. Tobacco was ruzcd down at the opening on the explicit announcement that the much talked of plug tobacco combination had once more fallen. There were Injected Into the dullest portion of the day's trading two BiiccssKlve transactions of 12.500 shares and 0.000 shares , respectively , of Tobacco preferred at 113 , "sellers 30. This repre sented u transaction of over $2WJOOUO and was supposed to nhow the disposal of the company's treasury stock , application for the listing of which was made yesterday. The common stock was rather feverish for a tlmo after thin sale , but settled down into steadiness nnd neglect. There was an up turn In Sugar also during the day , which was explained by the news that certain grades of soft sugars had been advanced In prices. IkMllr.liiff BUbscquently wiped out practically all the advance. The railroad list held generally flrm throughout the early part of the day , but subsequently cased olt In sympathy with Sugar and the Northern Pncitics. The dally attack on the coalers lacked vim and the dctllno only reached a point In Now Jersey Central. The tralllc statement of St. Paul for the second week in October , showing nn Increase over last year's earnings of nearly $140,000. IK undoubtedly a pretty fair Indica tion of what IB going on in the grain-carry- ing rondu. All reports agree that it is dif ficult to secure enough cars to meet the demand for the freight movement , both east and westbound. The speculative public ap parently views these developments with apathy. The apathy existed today In nil the sjcurlty markets of the world , tha pause In London being attributed to wait ing for more settled political conditions and the completion of liquidation in Berlin. The process of accumulating exchange hero is going on from day to day and the banks continue to gain cash from ths aubtroasury. The final allotment of government 3 < < from Washington makes It probable that goX'ern- mcnt deposits In national bnnks will soon approach the $100,000,000 mark , after which the dcllclt In the revenues Is expected to steadily diminish their account. Bonds were dull but Ilrmly held today. Total sales , $1.343,000. United States old 4s. registered , advanced 1-8 per cent ; tlnlte l States old 4s. coupon , and the Cs , H PT < cent in the bid price. The Evenlnjr Post s London financial ca blegram says : Tim stock markets * hero wore Idlein tone. There was no notewor thy change. Paris continues to buy South African shares , which Is the best answer to the political reports. That market is also buying copper shares , the prices of the rrctal continuing to advance. Gold Is be ing bought in this market for America through Paris In small amountsand ths fact supports the discount rate * . A good many cattle , however , were on the road from the west which were not af fected by the storm any more than that the trains , many of them , camn in late. In addltlo'n to the fresh receipts , there were -1,000 cattle carried over , BO that the supply In the yards was the largast In a good many days. Taking everything into consideration the ircneral market was by no means In such bud shape. There was a peed demahtl on the part of local packers for beef steers , which sold at Jim about steady prices. That is , corn- f jl cattle sold at yesterday's prices , which were a little lower than last week. The cornftd cattle on sale were not very nu merous nor very good , BO that suUs did not make much of a showing ofi paper. Ornis wcKterns rood nough for beef wcro fully steady with U. t week nnd Just about ay nigh u they liiva been any time. Ono good bunch brought J4.CO. There wore also a few Texan * hare , which sold at just about the sftrto prices ns were paid last week. Cow stuff was in fnlr rcouent at the same prlcoa current yesterday , the demand being good in proportion to the offerings , which were far from large- . The most of tha cattle ncre were stack ers and feeders , and as there was very little country demand the general market was not overly qctlvo. Still a good many cattle changed hands , local speculators taking hold quite well. The market was no worse than yesterday. The general run of feeders can safely be called icyzoc lower than last week , and anything on the commonUh order would probably be 2tic lower. Choice or fancy cuttle as a mat ter of course would show less decline , hut they were all of KyjlSe lower. Repre sentative fidle * : 8TEER& . No. Av. Pr. Yesterday thl was the highest market on the river , and the drove bought by ono of thn largest packers In Chicago cost ] e loss than the average price paid for all the hogs at this point. South Omaha buyers In consequence were feeling that their hogs were coutlng them too much , HO that when Chicago reported the market as Rtlll lower today they were all ready to take off something here. However , the receipts were too light and the demand too good to admit of there being much of u. decline and tha hogs Fold only 2Utl"5c lower than yesterday. A few loads of rough heavy hoi < s went at J3.C5. and a few good light loads nt $1.70 , with the Ions string at I3.C71. . .
