I 1 10 THE OMAHA DALLY 33EE : TJIUKSDAY , SEPTEM15ETI ii2 , 1S98. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Wheat Opens Up Strong and Active , but the Pinny Does Not Lash DECLINE IN SEPTEMBER AND DECEMBER Out * Arc Strong Under Covering ! > ) ' Short * nnd Advanced tt-S of a Cent I'rovUlnnn Dull mid CHICAGO , Sept. 21. Wheat was strong today at the opening and weak at the clo&e. Heavy outsldo buy leg and largo export sales wcro suatalnlng influences , but realizing by proforelonal local holders proved too much for the trarkct to stand up under. BccJin- ber closed at 1-Sc decline nnd September 3-8c lower. Corn was easy , but lost only n small fraction. Oata wcro strong under covering by shorts and advanced l-SQS-Sc. Provisions were dull and weak , closing 2'i : to lOc lower. Wheat was strong at the opening. De cember closed yesterday at C3 3-Sc , started today at 63 3-8G3Ac ! and advanced In a very few minutes to 03 G-SS&Ii'Uc. ' A slight reaction then took place , the price dropping to 63liG3 3-8c , hut the market almcst Im mediately turned strong again and before uelllng became heavy enough to affect prices December had advanced to 63 7-8c. Sep tember , though Inactive , was nlso very strong , opening % c higher at C7c and ad vancing to C7 , c. The main fcaturo of the strength was the huavy buying of a promi nent Ht. Louis speculator , his purcnascs dur ing tbo first hour's trading being estimated nt 1,500,000 bushels. The character of the news was rather oucouraglng to buyers. Jillnncapolla and Duluth receipts wcro IU2 cars , against 018 cars last week and 813 cars a year ago. Chicago receipts were - \ cars. Liverpool cables showed strength In that market and a strong continental demand for wheat wns reported with prlc-js higher. Duluth reported cash wheat In good demand nnd % o higher. After the firot hour's trnJ- Ing the market began to wsakon. Offerings became heavier and general , nearly all of the local holders who have been buying for several days putting wheat on the marknt. Later Liverpool cables showed some of the advauco ( hero lest. Atlan'.ls port cljirlngs were moderate , 2 5,000 bushoK Corapaiod with yesterday's heavy clearings , this nmount wns not very encouraging. A gradual decline took place , December get ting down -to 63 3-8c. Here another buying Hurry dovclopcd , sending the price back to 03 7-8c , but bidders at that price wcro deluged with offerings and the price quickly broke to 631-Sc. The market lluctuatcd rupldly In a narrow range under actlvo ncalplng , hut did not develop any real strength again until near the close , when the announcement that seventy loads of cash wheat had been sold for export rallied the prlco suddenly to G3'/4c. it dropped again to G3Vic and closed rather nervous ut that llgure. September sold as low as GG 1-Sc nnd closed at 66V4c. Corn was dull and heavy- The market showed strength nt the opening , but later It was largely In sympathy with wheat. There was some changing from September to December. The country reported selling new corn to nrrlvo In November nnd De cember. The leading futures ranged a * follow * : Articles. Opsn. ll\eh. \ Low. SiiRnr Orcnplcn tlio Clilcf Attention in tlio llny'M Oiicrntloim , NI3W YORK , Sept. 21. The course of Sugar today Indicated a long bear turn In that stock has como to nn end for the present. Dealings In this stock continued to absorb a big proportion of the total trans actions. Efforts to hold the money rnto proved unavailing in view of the * disparity between the New York call money rate nnd other markets and call loans on the board fell to 2 per cent. As n result of relief from these. Important reactionary tendencies , the market wns strong nnd re covered qulto generally from yesterday a decline. Uut the strength WHS conllned largely to spots nnd the market Is still In the hands of professionals and rcllccts no outside Interest. There wns still some apprehension that the rally In Sucnr might bo simply the re sult of mnnlpulntlon directed against n largo bear account. The sudden plenitude of money was also looked ut somewhat askance and with some remains the fear that a further Hurry In call money might bo possible. The fact that money has been easy to obtain for several days In nlmost all markets , but not on the Stock Ex change , encourages this feeling. Hut the call money market was unable to with stand the influence of the various agencies which have been Ht work for Its relief. The sub-treasury had another heavy debit bal ance of nearly J2,000,000 ut the clearing house today , reflecting In part the pres entation of checks for the anticipatory payment of the October 1 Interest on gov ernment bonds. Transfers of currency from Now York to the west through the sub-treasury fell to JSO.Ouo today nnd New York exchange In Chicago advanced to only 10 cents discount. There were further en gagements of- gold In London for Import , resulting In a. sharp rise of - per cent to 1 per cent in the money rate and of 3-8 nnd % per cent to 21-S/2U per cent in the discount ruto In that market. The stiffening of the London money rate begot dullness In the stock market there , the heaviness extending to the American group nnd re sulting in some selling for London account here. Except in one or two instances this selling was without much effect. A number of stocks responded sharply to special causes , us for Instance , Manhattan on the return from Europe of the dominant capi tal ; Brooklyn Transit , on talk of the ab sorption of another line ; General Electric , on the belief that It would benefit from the recent combination of electrical Intercuts. Leather preferred , on covering of shorts who misapprehended the meaning of the now leather company announced yester day. The coalers , Cotton Oil , Rubber , New York Air Brake and some other specialties showed conspicuous advances. In the rail road list , outside of Northern Pacific , dealIngs - Ings were not large , but prices In a num ber of cases advanced a point net. Last prices were the best and the market was strong nnd most nctivo at the close. Prices of bonds rallied at the close on nn curly tendency towards decline. Total saltB were $1,600,000. United States 5s declined U and the 3s when issued 1-8 In the bid price. The Evening Post's London llnanclnl cablegram Bays : The stock market here was lifeless and heavy today , the gold movement having demoralized the markets here. The close was a trlllo better owing to the Improvement In Americans , which wcro stimulated by buying from New York. Americans were flat during the early hours on realizations by a. few English bulls , but New York buying this afternoon revealed the fact that there Is very little stock about and prices closed ut the. best. Pacific stocks were chiefly favored. Argen tines were lint. The question of a rise In the Bank of England's discount rate to morrow Is much discussed with opinions about evenly divided. I nm Inclined to think that an Increase In the selling price of gold Is more probable than n rise In the discount rate. Apparently the bank's policy Is first to make the present rate effective by borrowing from the market. The bank today borrowed Into October and No vember. Advices from both Chicago and Kansas City indicated larga receipts and lower markets , but owing to the large demand values were well main tained at this point. The packers all wanted fat cattle this morning and both corufeds nnd grassers were good sellers at prices that were gen erally about th same as wcro paid yester day. In fact there was very little change In the market In any direction , but if any thing It was a llttlo stronger. All the arly arrivals were cleaned up In a very short time. There was nothing hero as good ns the top cattle yesterday , but there were a few loads good enough to bring $5.25. Cows and heifers were In moderate suppl > and the offerings for the most part sold early nnd with no noticeable change ir va\ues. Bulls and rough stock also broughl stcdy prices. The few veal calves bare mel with ready sale , good ones bringing $6.50. Although qulto a good many cattle were carried over by speculators from yeaterdaj the fresh arrivals sold well this morning the market being active and Just aboul steady , some would say strong. The yardf were full of visitors thin morning , there bi-ing n good ninny Iowa feeders among the nurator who had come In to bo present al the pxpnsltlon on lown day and at the same time look In'.o the cattle situation. The receipts as re ported looked large this morning , but they did not pan out so very much on the mar ket. Out of the number counted In there were loi'rtt-en ' loads of feeder * that were sold to arrive and were weighed up her . The sale cannot bo published , but It can be said thai the price was steady and that there Is no material change In values as ro < : irds feeding sheep. The market on fat sheep was not qnlto so satisfactory to the selling Interests In that both Chicago nnd Kansas City were reporting a decline and buyers here seemed td think that they ought to have a llttlo concession from yesterday's prices. Sellers were In no hurry to take off anything and for that reason the market was a llttlo slow to open. Later on they bought the sheep , hut the market on mutton grades was a , llttlo easier. The very excellent demand for ] feeding sheep Is helping to hold up the market on the killing grades as the feeder buyers are taking a good many sheep that otherwise would go to the killers. It was rising.t today that half of the sheep In Chicago were going to the buyers of feed ers so that killers do not have things all their own way by any means , even when there In a large run.
