u THE OMAHA DAILY 3JEE : SATtTHDAY , SEPTEMBER IT , 1SS. { ) COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Wheat's ' Activity Qeta Setback and Com Be comes Very Strong. LIVERPOOL MARKET TAKES UPWARD JUMP Unix Ilrrlliio n nil l'rovllon Ilitlc Homnvliat AV'cak , All C i - nioillllen I , < * nrliiK Off H Trllle IHirer , CHICAGO , Kept. 10. Increased receipts nnd absence of cash demand wau the causa of the setback In wheat. December lost 1/1 C(7-8c. ( Corn wan unchanged. Oala declined 3-Sc. Pork left oft ofc7l4c lower , Inrd 2t/4fj5o nnd ribs Go. Anxious shorts In wheat covered yester day , so that there was no further alarm created when Liverpool , before thu opening In.-re , reported an additional sensational jump of 2 1-Sd for September delivery. If Liverpool December wheat had dunu pro- porllonulely us well us September thu ef fect upon speculative Hentlment In Chicago would doubtless have been different , but it showed a duclinu of Hd , so that the Sep tember strength was concluded to urlso from u mere squeeze on the other side , which hud no significance for any onu out- iildu of the ranks of thu Liverpool shorts. On that account lliu slart hero watflc down for beptembor and liii'.ic ' for December. Ivorth western reeelpts.ere heavy us usual und mere was no ununuc in ine c.iirosimml- ing llghlness of Iho winter wheat receipts. Chicago received lui curs , against 2i& a > uur ugu. und the northwest 1,0)3 , compared wllli l.uU the year bulore. spring unu wlnler wnent receipts ioellii. ui uu vvuat < .ni primary markets were l,3u , Wu bushels , which only exceeded by 4iUouo bushels iho quantity received lliu similar uuy ot tlm liruvlous year. Tlio Atlantic purl exporls uf wlieut und Hour were equal to tJit.uuO bushels. Soon uflcr the opening Dulutli uhowcd ! ic u bushel advance In price ot' ti'ush wheat and some lllllo strength was thereby Imparled lo thu market here , but ) iut long thereafter a decline of le look jiluco lu price of Dululh cash wheat , and that put a damper on bullish Hentlment. Later In the day Minneapolis dropped lc for spot wheat and weakness hero beeamo more pronounced. September opened lu ut G5ic , sold sparingly ut GGc nnd was in clined downward most of the tlmo after that. December .started l-SlMc down at from Klc to G31-Sc , recovered to 031-SM 13Jc ! und from that It gradually declined until about an hour from the close It was down to C21ic. An advance of 15 centimes nt Paris and 50 centimes for American red wheat ( it Antwerp had no effect on this market , which In the lust hour uf Ihe HOS- Blon had apparently become weak lo slay. The absence of demand for cash wheat In nny quantity nt least and reported delivery liero nnd nt Toledo of spot wheat or Sep tember contract created a heavy feeling near the end and caused further declines. September gel down to G3c nnd closed nt CS c , December to B2UC , nnd closed with trading nt 62 3-S$7C2i4c. Corn experience was Just the reverse from yesterday.Ihe demand being strong , while wheat was weak. The fact that th > mar ket did not break with the reaction In wheat was the Incentive for covering. Fair buy ing by commission houses also helped to rstnbllHh a firmer undertone. The demand for visible room was qulto urgent and re united In a shade Improvement In rate of freight. December began unchanged at 29Wc , rose to 2) ) 7-Sc , declined to 29 S-SWVic nnd closed at 291AC buyers. Oats struggled along In the wnkc of corn , nlthouch they did not display ns much strength ns the loader did. There was a fair cash demand and clearances were qulto 1 liberal. Mov onened unchanged lo 1-Sc lower nt 22 < H221-Re , held stendy for n tlmo nt 22 1-Sc , declined to 21 7-8'iT22c ' and llrmed up to 22c buyers nt the close Provisions ruled weak , suffering from a pressure of hoes. Heavy soiling of lard nnd ribs also added to th doollno In prices. December pork opened 10fI12'Ac ' down at J8.3714 , . 'vanood to $8.45. then weakened to $ R.42i/i , . o closing price. Tills had the effect of bringing the morning advance In the prices of stocks lo n standstill. The dull ness that followed Invited operatlonn by Iho bears. Then cenlered their atlacks on Sugar which was feebly supported at any time during Ihe day , though there was one. or two sharp rallies on covering ot shorts. They effected an extreme decline of over flvo points in this slock , and worked a reacllon In Iho whole list , earlier ad vances being entirely wined out with a few excepllons. The decline was effecled on light transactions for most stocks. There was prollt-laklng by room traders , but no resumption of the urgent liquida tion which was characterisllc of Ihe mar ket earlier in the week. Active support was withdrawn , however , and manipula tion to advance , prices was abandoned for the time being. The earlier part of the day saw a very active market and some sharp advances , the Pacifies and the Indus trials maintaining their leadership. To bacco niadci a new high record at 152V4 , as did New York Air Brake nt 104. The grangers were In good demand , but there was no apparent effort to advance prices. There was a slightly higher range for call loans at the board today , but the ippreh'jnt'on of stock operators was rather of the. sentimental effect of a probable lurther ci-cteaso In Ihe surplus reserve which will bo shown by lomorrow's bank slalement and Inability to get money for use. The decline In the surplus In Ihe treasury is duo to Ihu facl lhat last week's statement was based on falling averages , so that last week's operations will be partly reflected In tomorrow's statement. More over , there had been no such contracllon of loans this week as last to offset the losses In cash , which have continued to a lesser extent on account of subscriptions to the government loan and out-of-town demand for currency. It Is not oxpecled therefore that the statement will show much surplus reserve left , in spite of the- large deposils of government funds which have been made with New York banks during the week. Outside banks show a disposition to send money here to bo loaned nnd especially for the pur chase of mercantile paper. Moreover , about $1,300,000 additional In gold was en gaged in London today for import , KO that no further serious crisis Is expected In the money market. London bought stocks here this morning , but lurned seller after prices had advanced and the engagements of gold for Import had been announced. The bond market was moderately active. and prices were quite firmly held. Total sales , $2,7iO,000. United Stalest 4 , bolh old and new , and Ihe 5s advanced H In the bid price today. Demand for the 3s was much curtailed , and the price ruled at 1033-8 all day.The > The Evening Post's London financial ca blegram says : The stock markets here opened generally buoyant today , but gave way later , and , e xcepl for Americans , prices have not recovered since. The main reason for Iho selback Is Ihe fear of a cabinet crisis in Franco over Ihe Dreyfus Incident , while the sltualion at Fashoda Is ulsc not liked. Americans were good. The strength In New York Induced dull purchases here , but the. chief support was from Ihe. continent. Conlral Paclllc was i again boughl largely by Berlin. It Is be- i llevcd that financiers there wish lo have 1 a say In Ihe reconstruction scheme. Prices advanced sharply after business hours , but closed n fraction under Ihe best. Knf- , firs were good early In Ihe day , but closed I weaker In sympathy with the Paris bourse. New York Is buying gold very strongly and has taken a small amount from the Bank of England today. The market was also Rood and the general situation WHS enllrely satisfactory to everyone except buyers , who were complaining of the small supply of desirable beef cattle , All told , there were only ten or a dozen loads of corn fed steers with a few scattering loads ot weslcrns and some rough Texas. The market on all kinds of desirable beeves was strong and active and the prices paid were entirely to the liking : of sellers. Anything good In the way of corn fed steers Is selling as high us any time. There was nothing fancy here today , but several loads were good enough to bring $5.00 5.15. The supply of cow stuff looked small to day after the big run yesterday and there was hardly enough to go the rounds so that buyers soon cleared the pens. The market did not show any material change , values being Just about steady. A six-load bunch of the Ogaltala cows brought $ ! .G5 , the same price that was paid yesterday , with the only difference that they were sold straight today , while a few were thrown out yesterday nt a less price. The wire edge appears to wear off from the market on heavy feeding cattle and the trade for the last few days has been In clined to drag , with values showing a downward tendency. The prices paid did not slow much change from day to day , but It Is very apparent that valuH are gradually sagging on Hint kind. On the other hand , there has been a revival In the demand for yearlings. A large bunch of aionluna yearlings sold yesterday after noon at $4.CO. Some light weight white faces , rather on the southern order , sold this morning at $4.GO , which would not have brought over $4.25 two weeks ago. Representative sales : STEERS.
