strength In corn was nn Inlluence to wheat

prollt taking by shorts , offerings were
small with the competition sharp and prices
held firm for a time. The enormous receipts
In the northwest were regarded ns din-

reports , an against 1 , : ! 0 for the same tlmo

Low temperatures and reports of killing
frosts In bomo districts strengthened corn
oarly. The fear that the government re
port due this week might not show any
deterioration since August C , however ,
ncted us a partial counterweight to the
general bullish surroundings of the corn pit.
December began 3-VUViC higher at JO.VO

NEW YORK , Sept. 0. Today's stock
market was variable and Irregular at all
times , but was more or less under the con
tinuing Influence of the shrinking surplus
reserves of the bank and the stlffer rates
for money. General speculation was almos-t
at a standstill and tlu- movement of the
market was confined largi ly to special
stocks , the trading being highly profes
sional throughout. The opening was higher
Ic In I sympathy with London. It iiil | > kly be
came evident , however , that no outside In
terest had been enlisted hero and the pro
fessional bears attacked the list In weak
spots , notably Manhattan , People's Gas
und Tobacco , and soon wiped out the
earlier gains. A number of Individual
slocks showed conspicuous strength nil day

nel Is being run on the vein which at prcB-

gold principally. The property gives every
Indication of becoming a mine with the
necessarw development which It , will doubt
less receive In the course of the next year
or two. The Wheel of Fortune Is owned by
a company of Denver men. UurlnE the
summer for about flvo years past a crosscut
tunnel has been In progress , having for
Its objective point tlio main lead of the
property , which Is several feet wldo on the
surface and carries good gold values. This
tunnel Is enld to bu closely approachlne
the objective point. In its course one cross
lead of good dimensions , carrying medium
pold and sliver values , was Intersected.
If the vein which will shortly bo cut comes
up to expectations nt that depth , it la un-

CATTLE Today's trade In cattle can be
summed up In a very lew words good to
choice cattle , both beeves and heavy feed
ers , were just about steady , while all others
WITH slow and lower. The most of the
cattle hero were grass westerns , with
about a dozen or llfteen loads of cornfeds.
Thi110 were a few pretty decent cattle
among the latter , which sold at J5.105i5.lC ,
but the most of the westerns were none too
good. Buyers. In fact , were claiming that
the westerns averaged up the poorest thut
they have In a number of days and that
that was In large part the cause of the
slowness of the market. Another reason
why buyers were not overly aiiNlous for
the rattle was the fact that there was n
Kood Tuesday's run at all leading markets ,
giving the Impression that the week's re
ceipts am liable to be large.
Cow stutt was slow anil lower In
sympathy with the decline on medium
Brades of steers , and It was late before the
market opened and close to midday before
anything llko u clearance was effected.
The country demand for feeders continues
Rood , but the most of the cattle leaving the
yards are going Into Iowa and Missouri ,
while Nebraska Is buying very sparingly.
Huycrs most all want good to choice cattle
! of good weights , which are scarce and con
sequently prices on that kind are held very
I lirm while on others the market is weaic.

lions Tint market opened a little
stronger than yesterday , though the fact
that the hogs were a little tetter had a
good deal to do with the apparent strength.

medium weight loads at $3(77'- ( . Packing
hogs sold principally at J3 fHVTI3.62is. with

Tho'market , as a whole , however , w.ts not
much different frnni yesterday , the. bulk
of the sains for both days being at the

The trade was rather slow , duu in large
part to the reluctance of salesmen to ac-

determination to force thn market up a
