10 THE OMAHA DAILY JJME : SATUJIDAY , AUGUST U7 , J808 , COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Heavy Foreign Harkota Cans * Wheat to Be Depressed After Bnojant Opening. PROVISION MARKET AFFECTED BY FEVER Lard and Itllm Unchnnncd , fork Dnirn Five Centi ) Corn Down an 1 . , Elvlith "lid Outs Unchanged. CHICAGO , Aug. 25. After nearly two hours' elation and buoyancy today wheat became Bogfry nnd depressed on heavy for eign markets nnd liberal receipts of the new crop. September nnd December closed 3-8 < Slc lower each. Corn lost Uc. Oats are unchanged to 1-So higher. Pork Is down Cc ; Jard nnd ribs remain unchanged. The tendency nt the start In wheat was toward weakness , but the market soon turned strong and prices continued to creep tip for nn hour und a half , during which tlmo September rose from 63 6-8 < 8C3 7-8c at the start to G4G-8c. It held firmly within Uc of the price last mentioned for another liulf hour und then In about fifteen minutes It undid all Its previous work by dropping back once more to 63 D-Sft-CS-Tic. The Sep tember future , while showing the widest r.-ingo In vnluon , was not the most lieavlly dealt In. The new business was largely conllncd to December nnd May , In which later deliveries fluctuations were less anc the volumeof trade larger. A good deal was done In the way of buying In short wheat fur September and reselling It for December. The Liverpool market rc- eponded but feebly to the previous day'f rlso here , but Chicago received only 158 curs wheat , against 200 estimated , awl com pared with 252 received the corresponding day the year before. Minneapolis and iu- luth received 511 cnrlouds , against 327 lust year. Although that amount was again heavily In excess of those of the preceding ecason , It was not so largo as to bo cxces- Rlvcly bearish. Wild the present simil Blocks of visible wheat It wan necessary to the September ohorts to prevent them from gettlnc panicky that the news shouli not only be bearish but decidedly so. The primary winter wheat marketH on the other hand all received much less than they dli the corresponding day of the year before the total being S07.000 bu. , against 920,000 bu last year. The continental markets were not much changed , except for August de livery at Paris , where one of the pcrlocllca French corners was In progress. An esti mate of the probable outcome of the spring wheat rrop by statisticians now of 300,000- 000 bu. did much to calm the minds of shorts iind prevent undue confidence on ths par : of bulls , who doubtless did not lese High of Snow's figures , even when prices were taking a climb early. Demand from the ticaboord for nhlpping lota was not very lirlwk , nnd principally for September ship ment. The market ruled very heavy near the end , September getting ilown to 63',4c nnd December declining to 61 > .ic , but they both rallied n fraction just as the bell was tapping. September opened unchanged to 1-Sc lower nt 63 5-8W63 7-8c , advanced to C > 1 6-8c. dropped to C3Uc and closed at G3 3-Sc pcllcrK. December started unchanged to Fi-So down at 615-8SC17-8c , Improved to 62 l-8c , receded to 61'/i and left oft at 01 3-8c A little business was done In corn for ex port , but the tone was heavy for an hour or so , during1 which It was strengthened by the early bullishness of wheat. Sep tember opened unchanged to l-8c higher al from SOftSO l-8c , Improved to 30V4Q30 l-8c anc then worked slowly down to 29 > io and closet with buyers nt that. Trade In oats was only moderately active and pretty well scattered. There was some Inquiry from the seaboard for heavy grain hut the bids were somewhat out of line September began unchanged to 19c , sold tip to 20c and closed nt 1954019 7-8c. Provisions were affected In a small way by talk of yellow fever In Texas. Pork however , was the only one of the three speculative commodities that showed a de- citno worth noting nnd the loss In pork prices was only 6c a bbl. M.-lndlcntlons In the stock market late yesterday that the liqui dation of profits was over for the present and that powerful Interests were prepared to enter on the lone side were evidently confirmed today. Prices were marked up sharply at the opening , but them were sufficient selling orders placed with com mission houses to reduce the cnltin In the grangers and put a stop to the advance. The enormous absorption of the Northern Pacific stocks , however , was unabated nnd the nggresslvo strength shown by Sugar nlso helped the early rise. The continued udvanco of Minnesota Iron nnd strength tn Homo of the Industrial specialties were ftlso sustaining forces. There was evidence of support In Manhattan , thtia nerving to remove uneasiness us to the unsettling effect of that stock. The large outside of ferings to take profits served to materially decrease the buying movement , however , and a period of dullness and firmness Inter vened. It was terminated by the sudden movement In Union Pacific , which rose early above 32 and WOK held thcro for the balance of the day. The preferred Htock was also lifted to 67 nnd the movement ex tended to the gningcrH and southern rail roads. The Northern Paclllc stocks suffered from profit-taking under cover of this di version of speculation , but the advance In the general list was continuous and the market broadened HO as to embrace a large number of dormant stocks. The grangers were all advanced to near the high point on the present movement and St. Paul rose a sharp fraction above It. A late recovery In People's QMS after early depression carrying the price above 107 held the mar ket in the final truiwnotlons In the faro of some active profit-taking and an ad vance In Denver preferred of nearly 2 points helped to the same end. The money market maintained its firmer tone today , call loans ranging from 1 % to 2l,4. Sterling- exchange weakened under the pressure of grain and cotton bills giving assurances that prompt relief may be had for any money stringency. New York banks ave been losing steadily to the sub-trcas- ry on bond operations during the week , ut government deposits with the banks ave been largely increased as the newly iBtributed 3 per cent bonds have be- omo available to the banks as security or government deposits. Uneasiness re- tvrdlng the declining surplus reserve has here fore been largely allayed. Profit taking was In evidence in some of the speculative > ends today , but the standard issued were mainly flrm. Total sales , $4.770,000. Govern ment bonds were unchanged. The Evening Post's London financial cablegram Bays : Stocks were quiet here to- ay , except Americans , which were nctlvo nd strong. They opened quiet , but soon ccnme buoyant on buying of Northern 'aclfle and Union Pacific from Berlin. St. > aul also advanced sharply on belated oars buying , the only sellers being arbl- rage houses where fulr margins existed. * Jew York also absorbed stock readily , rloes closed at the best nnd arbitrage ealers expressed confidence of a further Iso in spite of such factors as a fall In wheat. Canada Pacific 'Was sold from Ber- in but it subsequently rallied with Amerl- ans. There was a further rise In Argen- Incs and Brazils. About 500,000 rrived today from the Cape. The principal uyers were RUSH la and Japan , but I learn rom a good quarter that New York Is .Iso buying moderately. Spanish exchange n London Is easier and consequently Spain a again buying silver. A preliminary re port , issued by the Indian currency com mission , containing evidence of cxportH , xcltes much attention. H is believed in the > cst Informed quarters here that the gold tandard experiment will bo tried. The re newed upward tendency In the .London money market comes In response to the firmer tone of New York money rates and ho Increase In American bills offered here or future delivery. New York Dry Good * Market. NEW YORK , Aug. 26. The dry goods market shows no radical Improvement , Stora trading seemn to show little { rain. In woolen and worsted goods the week has shown poor results. In cotton goods there are few features to the trading except those which are noted in connection with thei print cloth market. It Is stated that 90.000 pieces of sheets and early futures have been sold within the last two days. Extras are still quoted at ' 'c. Staple cot tons show no gain of moment in any grade. Blankets and flunneU perhaps show as good results as nny divfelon. Printed cot tons are quiet In all departments. Ging hams continue to sell far ahead of the sea son at well sustained prices. Left over 650 Total 2,464 8,013 2,132 CATTLE The feeling In the fat cattle mar ket was a little better than yesterday and desirable cornfed cattle were at least steady to strong. The buyers acted more as it they wanted the cattle than they did yes terday , due possibly to the fact that the supply was far from large. Some good medium weight but well fattened corn cattle sold up to 95.20 , with fair but well fattened lots going at about 16.00. There was quite a string of western beef steers among the offerings and they changed hands in good Reason nt Just about steady prices. Some big , coarslsh westerns sold at )4.35. which Is about where that kind of cattle has been landing right along. Only about ten or a dozen loads of cows nnd heifers were on sule nnd the market on that kind was unchanged. They were practically all westerns , with quite a wide r.ingo In quality. Considerable interest centers in the stocker and feeder trade just at present , which as the season advances Is becoming of more Importance every day. The break In the market for that kind of cattle this week has attracted especial attention. To day tne fresh arrivals were not large , most of the westerns here being good enough for killers , and the market did not show much change as compared with yes terday. Still the market on yearlings , If anything , was lower and it Is safe to call It JW/40c lower than it was a week ago. Some would call the break even larger than that. A buyer remarked this morning that he was offered yearlings at $4.15 that he would have paid 14.65 for at the high time last week. While yearlings are so much lower , good heavy feeders weighing ; 1,000 to 1,100 pounds are very little. If any , lower. Good cattle of that description are selling right around $4.30.
