NKW YORK , Aug. 2.1 There was noth
ing In the general situation either In the
political or the business world to account
| for a reaction In stocks today. The market
[ j
ket , was simply overbought nnd was sub
jected to a process of testing , which ,
JI whether designed to do so or not , Inevit
ably ! readjusts prices to the true basis of
value. Yesterday's heavy profit taking on
the part of some of the powerful Interests
who had been bulng stocks In the eonll-
dencu that they would advance In prices
led 1 the way naturally to today's movement ,
1I 1t It became uvldent at the opening that
the strong support for the holders had
been withdrawn. In thu grangers even the
outside , bu > lng , which has so eagerly ab
sorbed those stocks for some time past ,
showed a marked diminution. There weru
oven selling orders In the commission
houses 1 for outside ncount , thus showing
thai ii large part of the recent public In-
teresl has been for speculative account.
Hut tint outtddo speculative public failed
to show the iiggrenslvu conlldenco In Its
holdings recently manifested by the power
ful bull clique. Neither had II the com
bined l resources at Its command to eomu In
and I ! support stocks on the declining market.
The weakness of the hands Into which
largo 1 amounts of the grangers had fallen
v , as mndu evident by the he ivy stop loss
orders : which vvcro uncovered by the decline
of ei 114 to l\ per cent In the grangers at mid
day. Hut the torrent of offerings at tha
low 1 point fell to Interests that wore wait
ing and willing and which effected a sub
stantial rally on comparatively light trans
actions. : The railroad list generally moved
In I sympathy with the grangers , the break
In 1t 1 them putting an end for the time being
1C thu strong upward movement which had
Het In Home of the low priced southern and
western railroad shares. The early weak
ness was accentuated by the perslstonl sag
ging of .Manhattan , which has fallen about
. " . points on the day. Brooklyn Trnnsll was
also under severe pressure nnd Consolidated
Ons and some of the other specialties suf
fered I for support.
The early weakness of People's Gas and
subsceiucnt strength probably reflected the
passing phases of e-fforts to adjust .1 busi
ness dispute Metropolitan Street Railway
rose at gno time 7 points without any news
to account for the movement. The Interna
tional piper stocks , Rio Grande Western ,
, West Chicago , Northwestern , Chicago Ter-
j I initial preferred and a number of other
Htocks gave evidence of special strength In
the t face of the general tendency of the
market. I There was a very marked falling
off In activity after the midday shaking
out suggestive of n pausing to take breath.
'I he day's net declines aio mostly small ,
but the greater pirt of the daj's business
vvafl done at pi Ices materially lower than
, jesterday's closing. Thu disposition to tiiKo
profits ] WOH also manifested In the bond

United States new 4s and the old Is , reg

The Evening Post's London financial ca

nulel today , bill llrm on the whole , Invest-
menl stocks being particularly strong.
Atnerleans were good early , but the close

Yorlc Dry ( iooiln Market.
YORK , Aug. 23 The dry goods
market shows slight gains from day to day.
Although there are many buyers in town
the bulk of the buslni\ss passing is the re
sult of mall orders. These orders are gen
erally for seasonable specialties rather than
staple goods , and results show that the
size of these has Increased. The store ttad-
Ing Is mulnly In thu jobbing houses and Is
confined to somewhat conservative limits.
The most cncomaging feature of the mar
ket Is the trading In pi int cloths and their
situation. The mills which have shut down
for two weeks and those which are to shut
down for var > lng periods between now and
October 1 will relieve the market of a con
siderable amount of stock now held In man
ufacturers' hands. Extras are much tlrmer
on account of this Hlds for sixty-four
seitmres at 2c- are not so qulcklv considered
as they wero. Contracts are hard to ob
tain at this price. Odd goods are in good
shape. There Is some strengthening no
ticed In the market for wide sheetings , but
this Is not stiinclcnt to Influence prices.
Export goods are * | n steady request , with
fair shipments reported. Coaise colored
cottons are quiet and featureless. Printed
cottons show no change.
Wool Mnrlict.

terial change In the mirkct here this week ,
the tone of values being quite llrm , with
thn volume of trade * , verv light. The trans-

off , but prices are steadily maintained.
Australian wools moved quickly , but con

CATTLLI Moderate rccc'p * of cattle for
a Tuesday , and a good , active market was
the general situation In the cattle division
this morning. The buyers of all kinds of
tattle appeared anxious for supplies nnd
Ihe yards were pracllcally cleared at an
early hour.
There VMIS nothing very choice In the way
of corn fed beeves and the besl here could
nol bo culled much more than pretty fair
stuff. All told , there were perhaps twentj-
llve to lhlrlllve loads of corn caltle , many
of Ihem on Ihe commonlsh order. The best
catlle here sold as high as $3 20 , Ihero being
nothing choice lo put a lop on Ihe market ,
and the common to medium grades sold nt
$470 490 , principally. The market was ac
tive and steady , as compared with yester
day.
Western grass beef catlle were In very
small hupply and sold readily al firm prices.
Cows and heifers sold slrong to 5Q10c
higher and the market was active al Iho
advance. Some corn fed heifers sold nl
$435t < 450 , and good grassers $175ft1K ! )
Hverj thing changed hands al an early
hour.
A very conslder.iblo proportion of all the
catlle hero were slockors and feeders The
market on that kind of eatllo was without
material change. Yesterday Iwenly-one
cars were shipped oul Into the country and
supplies In hands of speculators pretty
well cleaned up so that regular buyers
were nil wanting eatllo Ihls morning. The
result was that the market opened quite
active and the most of the offerings
( .hanged hands In a short time. Some later
arrivals did not meet with quite such a
good reception nnd as has been the rule
for some tlmo undesirable or common cat-
llo were ncglecled to some extent. Repre

SHEEP There were fifteen cars of sheet
rcporteil In the vards today , the largest run
since Thursday , last week. Aside from
three loads of feeders the supply consisted
entirely of mutton grades and mostly west
erns.
Dutlng the last week Chicago has been
gradually dropping down while the market
here has held up under the Influence of the
very light receipts. On account of the more
liberal run today It was onlv natural to ex
pect an easier market and values hero
could be quoted about lOo lower.
The Southworth Wjomlng wethers sole
at $110. which was SOc higher thin the
same sheep sold for three or four weeks
ago , but tin- sheep hero today were the tall-
end and lighter. Two loads of South
Dakota wethers brought $420 , but there
has been nothing like them here of late
with which to make comparisons The
Hershev sheep sold * , esterdny at $430 , nnd
today another shipment of the same lot
went at $4 20.
Feeding sheep were in as good demand as
usual and the Inquiries are considerably In
excess of the receipts. Representative
