In uhlch nro to bo found upwards of forty species of vntunhlo html woodi. Tliu lumber Industry , like , luilecd , most of ( the Island's resources , has been neglected ; under SpauUh rule. These great foresta nro practically unexplored. They have ccr- tnlnly never been surveyed by rxpcrti , though they will bo mlnw of wealth for the llrst lumbeimanlio exploits their con tents. As for the export * ot wood , about $220,000 a year , they represent a small frac tion of the possible product. The wood = which comes to market In largest quantity 1 from Cuba Is cedar , which is wonderfully abundant in I'lnnr del Hlo and the east. , - ' Hut the trade In cedar Is badly managed. ' What with bad packing and general flhUt- lessness , more than half the wood Is lost * or useless before It reaches this country. "Other woods * hlch wo have been In tbo habit of Retting fr ° i" Cuba are mahogany I . and lignum vltne , both very plentiful. The | common mahogany of the Island la the best there Is and sells in this country nud Ku- ropa at from $110 to $1SO per 1,000 feet. Another kind called figured or blrdscyei fetches from $400 to $ COO per 1,000 feet. U has been known , Indeed , to soil as high as $ .1,250. , The Cuban lignum vltao , the finest known , Is much in demand , bringing fiom $25 to $10 a ton , the extra quality $43. And thcro are many other woods \Uilch uould bo valuable- only brought to market. 'Tor example , Cuba contains thirty-two species of palm , including the Yarez palm , whoso leaves are used for the manufacture of hats and baskets. The articles eo inado are exported in considerable quantity to Europe , where they fetch good price * . The fiber , if not so pllablo ns that of the Pan ama bats , Is more durable. The bark of another palm , the palma real , ia used for boards. The boards are very hard and with stand moisture far bolter than the best yellow pine. Tbo palma real Is almost the only material used by the small farmers in building their houses. They employ the bark boards for the walls nnd the leaves foi roofing. I | "Tho Cuban ebony should have n largs i sale some day. The ncana , of which there are two varieties , ia used In the island for rafters. It Is very durable and will last for many years oven If exposed to woU Tuo Bablna clmarona resembles cedar , but U moro solid. It Is easily worked. Ths roblo bianco and roblo nmarllle ) are alse easily worked. They are used for window nnd door frames and for carriage and ship- \ building. Frou its durability the latter Is , known as eternal wood. The Jlqul Is ex tremely hard and Is especially suitable for ' posts on account of its durability. The ! quobra hacha has the same qualities. The raudlllo Is a peculiarly beautiful cabinet wood. The calmltlllo Is elastic and very strong nnd is used for rafters , carriage shafts nnd barrel hoops. Theguaina do costa is also stroug and elastic , and in ad dition it is practically waterproof. The yaya , maboa and cucro make coed rafters ; ( while the jagua is suitable for gunstocks ' and the cuya for posts , particularly under water. 'The Jlgue has great resisting properties , as has the majngua , as well as durability. Flora the bark of the latter ropes can be made as good almost as tl'.Oso ot manlla hemp. They used to be used all over the Island , but they are very dear owing to their being made by hand. "As proof of tbo usefulness of Cuban forest trees it may bo said that a bouse can bo built without tbo use of a single call and' ' strong enough to stand up against any wind. The ( beams and rafters ares Jled to gether with several species of liana , which are found in abundance in the woods. Another ] other interesting product of the , Cuban for est Is the water vine. It grows from two % and a hilf to three Inches in diameter and when cut yields a largo quantity of pure , fresh water. There are also considerable quantities of dye woods , while the supply of copal , rosin and turpentine in the foresta ot Plnar del Rio is simply unlimited. "The chief difficulty with which the Cuban lumber Industry has had to contend hitherto is lack of transportation facilities. Yet this is a difficulty which should bo easily got over , for the shape of the island is such that no point is far distant from the coast , while the latter has sheltered Inlets every few miles. The transportation of the wooel ought to bo a very email matter , If you re member that it is considered profitable in the United States to convoy lumber many hundreds of miles to the nearest river. But I have no doubt that this will bo all rectified once the Spaniards are out. " The Kind of Hire ] . Detroit Journal : The party with the long hair and starving family , not to mention lessor aymptoms of the literary bent , was less Bcrvile than usual. "How about my poem ? " he brusquely de manded "She's a bird , " replied the conductor of tbo magazine. "Whet kind of a bird ? " persisted the man of letters , thoroughly aroused. And the other , saying nothing , merely in dicated with a gesture , the pigeon-hols ' above his desk , The Yearn and the Year * . , Detroit Journal : She manifestly bad as pirations ; anyway her husband's waistcoat was held together with brass pant-b'utlons. "I have given the best years of my life to literature , " she exclaimed , bitterly , "and look at the miserable reward I get ! " . "Better glvo them to something else next time , " ho suggested , not unkindly. When a woman takes tlmo by tha fore lock , that settles it ; for tlmo wouleL of course rather turn back in its flight ? han become altogether bald. Her Chicago Post : Ho was dreaming about the bobtail ( lush ho had tried to fill curlier in the evening. "Oh , for another club ! " he cried in his sleep. Then it was that she shook him and woke him up. "It wouldn't do you any good , " she said. "I've taken the precaution to put the axe within reach on my sldo of the bed.
