xceptlon that the early strength of slocks
vas not fully recovered at tiny time sub-

In the grangers the opening prices wera

This level was helped by the marketing up

penliiK high for liquidation of protlts. The.
ommlsslon houses were known to have u

ono of the group was somewhat heavy for

The Pacific stocks also showed evidence

allied on the showing of an increase offer
for the second week In August of
16,544. There was heavy buying of Atchl-
on preferred during the day and Louisville
& Nashville advanced over a point near
he close on reports of a protect for a
teamshlp line to Havana. There were
lumcroiiR extraordinary price movements
n special stocks , Minnesota Iron covering
x range of II points and Illinois Steel about
points in efforts to adjust proportion of
aluatton on the consolidated. Interna-
lonal paper stock was up 11 points and
Consolidated Gas had a break of About 10
mints. Cotton Oil advanced Wt and the
ireferred S 1-S and Rubber preferred gained
al Imost 3 points and lost It all , There were
xtreme movements and there were subsc-
luent ractlons and recoveries which re-
luccd them Manhattan was consistently
weak and People's Qns was razed dev n 2
joints bv the boars , but afterward fully
recovered. The rallioad list generally held
steady and flrm In spite of the unsettled
nlluences of weak specialties and proflt-
aklng of the grangers , many stocks showi
ng gains ranging up to a point or over.
Sterling exchange showed a further de
cline on the diminished offerlnaa of stocks
bv London in this market. The break In
whcit ' had n some-what unsettling effect
'n the stock market , but the large increase
n primary receipts makes for the benefit
of tlio railroads The boml market was
active today and showed higher prices.

The Evening Post's London flnancta
cablegram sa > s : The stock markets here
opened good today nftcr Saturday's holi
day , the feature being a resumption of the
boom In Americans Initiated by Now York
The mipport of Americans hern Is stll
small and mainly professional , but the con
tingent buyers nnd Berlin continues to sup
port Northern Pacific common. It Is gen
erally urged here that the boom In Amer
icans is being started at the wromr mo
ment ; that Is to nay , the public Is apathetic
nnd away on summer holldajs , nnd thai
on their return they will tlnd prices too
high for them. The reverse , however. Is
quite as likely as the English public Invari
ably join In a speculation at the last mo
ment and when prices arc top heavy. After
a temporary relapse , prices for Americans
closed strong , St. Paul leading Erie pre
ferred was bought hero Brazils were bet
ter , but Argentines were easier. Do Beers
mines were flat. A contlnuanco of easy
money rates on the continent makes the
London discount mnrkot u shade easier to
day , but It Is noticeable that larger
amounts of American bills arc offered for
forward delivery.

The mall brines moat of these orders , as

Is little movement of consequence. Staple

lack of heavy trading of the sort which
makes an appreciable difference In the

satisfactory. Extras are llrht and stronger ,

CATTLE Today's receipts of cattle were
somewhat disappointing , as It was the
smallest run for n Monday slnco August 1.
Added to that was the still further fact
that the proportion of beef was small ,
while the demand was fully as largo a *
usual. As a result of the light receipts
und very good demand the market was
artlve and fully steady , or even strong , In
aplto of the fact that Chicago and other
markets vvcro reported lower.
All told there were onlv four or five loads
of * native beef steers In the yards. They
sold largely at $510' 535 , which was fully
Uv ! good as the market at the close of last
week.
The most of the cattle here were westerns
and there wore something like twenty-six
loads sultnblo for the killers. The market
was very active and buyers were anxious
BO that everything changed hands early at
good , strong prices. The western steers
sold mostly at ( i 40JH 65. There were about
thirteen loadb of Texas steers on sale ,
which brough t mostly $4 30.
Cows und heifers , especially the medium
to common kinds , sold loner last week , as
noted at the time , but toward the last
of the week the feeder buyers turned their
attention toward that kind of stuff and
braced up the fat cattle buyers a little.
The result was the killers were better buy
ers and they paid a little stronger prices
today than at the close of last week. All
told there 3re probably about twenty
loads of cow * and heifers , about half of
them coed enough for killers , and they
were not lone In changing hands. Feed
ing cows also sold well and the supply
vvns early exhausted.
Feeders were active and good kinds were
steady. Holders of common stuff com
plained that buyers were Inclined to neglect
them apd that prices were , If anything ,
Darkly up to last week's standard. Repre

the day was $370 , while on Saturday the
long string brought $3 75. The tables at
the head of column will show the receipts
today un slightly larger than a week ago
and n very little smaller than two weeks
ago. It was Just a fair average run for a
Monday. It will bo noticed from the table
of average prices that today's decline
leaves the market a shade lower than It
was nt the opening of last week , but at
