York Commercial.
St st stl" said Prlvato Wllhelm P.
Vollmar of the Eighth Infantry , who wnt
shot through the femoral artery In the
bnltlo of San Juan , "I remember marching
with the other boys up the road. Some of
is wcro whistling , others were Joking or
nskltiK questions , when suddenly I hoard
potuethlng llko n what shall 1 call U7 llko
nn InsecUpasa by inc. It seemed to bo buz-
SltiK or whlsprrltiK. 'St st stl' It was say-
ItiR , or FOtncthltiK like It. Of course , I
< now what U mount , nnd It gave me the
chills. I'd been expecting It nil along , nud
I thought 1 wouldn't care n bit. Hut when
that first 'st st stl' cnmo It struck mo
cold. Afterward 1 got BO used to these bul
lets that I didn't mind them. They whizzed
all around mo and still I did not care a
button. "
When the question was put to Prlvato
Darby , Company I ) , Thirteenth Infantry ,
who was shot through both lungs whllo
charging up the hill nt Sail Juan , ho said ,
with n smllo of Intelligence , ns though ho
had been Interested In the subject himself
aud given It somu consideration :
" 'PJiR-l'iB-pugl' but sometimes Its HKo
p\vow-p\Now-pwo\v ! ' It nil depends what
kind of n bullet and how It scoots through
the air , I think. "
William Young of Company F. Sixth In
fantry , who was Bounded In the right leg
In the Bnmo engagement , and whoso face
uud beard glonm dark amidst the lighter
complexions of his neighbors , was sum the
sound made by u Mauser bullet was "Uz-
dz-dzl"
"I can Just hear It rlnlng all around ino , "
ho said with the air of.no trying to recall
a dear moment In hla life. "H wns before
Santiago on July 11 , Wo were only a few
liundrcd feet from the Spaniards and the flro
was too terrible for anything. The full
strength of our reglmout was 450 and about
ono-thlrd of that number fell In that hall
of bullets. 'Dz-dz-dsst' they went. "
Privates McCue , Oscar Uaucum , Henry
Brett , Walter Buck , Frank Mauulng and Joe
Sullivan , all of whom are down with wouuds
received whllo fighting the Spaniards In
Cuba , agreed with the others , oneof them
adding philosophically that It was hard to
define exactly how a llylug bullet eouuded ,
since It Is no humau being aud its voice can
no inoro be Imitated by inau than the lan
guage of birds.
Fred Shockley , colored , of Troop D , Tenth
cavalry , however , thought the question the
easiest thing In the world to answer.
"How do a bullet sound ? " ho asked , na
ho raised his bandaged head with nn nlr
which seemed to say , "You might ns well
auk mo the color of the grass , " nnd then
enld In the most mnttor of course way :
"Like a trolley. "
Shockley wns shot through the head near
Santiago do Cuba on July 2. The bullet
cnmo out over his left temple , entered the
shoulder nnd pierced Its way out through
the breast. The wounds are healing well
and he Is rapidly approaching complete re
covery. ,
"I stood flr < ! from C In thd mornln' till 3
In the afternoon , " ho said. "It was a rcg-
ula' hall , an' I thought I don' ncba bo bit.
Why ? 'Causo I stood It BO long on' dcy
couldn't strike me. " *
"So you felt sure that you could not be
hit ? " was asked.
"Indeed I did , " Shockloy answered , with
pome resentment , his eyes glowing beneath
his snow-wblto bandages.
"But finally you wcro hit , wcro you not ? "
"Suro I wns , but I didn't feel It. Thcjr
picked mo up half-dead like. It was this
way. I wns layln' down to shoot an' raised
my head an' un" nn' dnt's nil , snh. "
Asked how It feels to bo ufrntd of death ,
Shockley said In 1ho Bamo matter of course
manner In which ho had answered the
question as to the sound of a bullet :
"Don1 be afraid o' drain , sir. "
"But didn't you think you might ho
killed ? Didn't you try to Imagine how It
feels to be dead ? "
"When a fella' be dead he don' feel nothln *
nohow ; so It ain't no use thlnkln' , " bo con
cluded , triumphantly.
Private Darby , the man who had been shot
through both lungs , said in answer to the
same question :
"You get a kind of 'I-don't-caro' feeling
and you don't care n. damn. You get recon
ciled to It. How did I feel before I got recon
ciled to H ? I was nfrald , No , it wns not
llko any other fear I'd ever felt 'before. ' It
was something different. It was like uirt-
I'll bo hanged If I can explain It. "
Previous to the war Darby was stationed
on Governor's Island and a short tlmo before
he left for the south ho was. a member of
the company of soldiers who gave military
performances In Madison Square Garden. He
Is n crack athlete and a eharpshootcr , and
soldiering was n pleasant occupation with
him. and so ho wont to the front willingly ,
ho says , and held himself In readiness to
kill and bo killed. While ho was speaking
ono ot the occupants of the neighboring
beds said to the other : :
"I was not afraid of death a bit. "
"I was llko hell , " remarked the other.
Prlvato Young told of oyoung recruit who
was so green that ho did not know how to
use the sight of his rlllc.
"Ho was an Ohio boy , " ho said , "only 1R
years old , but a pluckier fellow I never saw ,
Onco. as wo stood firing ho came up to mo.
'Say , ' says ho , ' I can't get my d d sight
fixed. I don't know If I shoot ever the hill
or under it. ' And ho was as cool as a cu \
cumber. "
The woundtxl men all laughed , and , elated
with the success of his story , Young went
on to tell them how his company was com
manded to retreat whllo ho was so excited
firing at the enemy that ho did not hear or
see anything.
"All at once I found that I was all alone
nnd near the Spaniards. Talk about being
afraid of death ! If I did not drop for
fcnr I was somebody else , not myself. My ,
how I ran ! When I reached my company
and all danger was over , for the time , at
least , I was more afraid than over , H
strikes me that after a battle a fellow is
inoro afraid than whllo he is right In' It.
Then ho Is too excited. "
"I guess you'ro right , " said one of
Young's wounded listeners.
