The present condition of trade , although not in any wise savoring of a boom , la deemed satisfactory and even above the cv- erago for several years past by both the wholesale and retail business men of Coun cil Bluffs. The prospects , they say , for a largo increase in all lines of business this fall appear very bright , and they are looking - ing for this increase earlier than usual Time reason they gvo ( is that harvesting commenced at an early date and in consequence - quenco time farmers will begin to make their purchases this fall at least a month before the general time. "Crops are good and time farmers of I'ottnwaltamie as a rule will be well fixed and most of them on easy street this fall , and we look for them to buy liberally mind not confine themselves to the bare necessaries , as the have been compelled - pelled to mho for a few years past" is the explanation given by a retailer whose business - ness to n great extent depends , upon his trade among the tillers of the soli , Inquiry among the implement firms and jobbers shows that they are all preparing for an increased business this fall. The spring trade was one of the best for many years , but this fall they are looking for oven better. The farmers , they say , will have "money to burn" and big sales in their different lines arc anticipated. Far several years the farmers in this county as throughout the slate have not been heavy purchasers of farming machinery as they have economized and tried to get along as best they could with what they had. This fall , however , the jobbers expect that the farmers will he purchasing wagons and fall plows and many of them new carriages. Business houses say that collections have held tip remarkably well this summer and that people as a rule seem to have more money. One of the biggest retail grocers In the city said : "The prices of groceries , es- pecialiy flour and sugar , have gone up , but people continue to buy just the sane , Fruit has been plentiful and consequently cheap this year , and the housewives of Council Blulfa are canning more preserves than they have clone for a member of years past , at least I jtmdgo this muot he the case from the immense quantities of sugar we sell. I also find my customers pay their accounts more promptly this year , and this goes to show that existing conditions are certainly more prosperous than they were this time last year. " At other retail and wholesale stores slm- Ilar reports were forthcoming , and the general - eral opinion among business amen of all classes 1n the city is that Council Bluffs can look forward to a most prosperous fall and winter trade this year , \Vnr Age lust Av'nrfetous Concerns. The retail druggists of Council Bluffs have been asked to join a boycott instituted by time Iowa Pharmaceutical society against certain patent medicines , on which the manufacturers and proprietors have raised I the wholesale price in order to cover the war tax. The charge Is made that the manufacturers - ufacturers have seized the opportunity to convert the war lax into a source of rev- cowl to themselves by increasing the cost of the article considerably morn than the tax amounts to. At time recent meeting of the State Pharmaceutical - macoutical society the matter was brought up for action and a set of resolutions were prepared and forwarded to every retail druggist in the state , the most pertinent among diem being time following : Resolved , That we appeal to the fairness of time manufacturers to reconsider tlmoir action in advancing their prices , as a matter - ter of justice to the retail druggists of the United Stales , believing the manufacturer does not fully realize the many burdens imposed upon the fraternity ; yet we will- higly nssuno our just share of all taxes , but decliho to assume those of the menu- lecturer , and we candidly amid firmly agree that to suck mmmtncturers as will not recognize ognize this just claim we will decline to sell , offer for sale or display any article of their manufacture upon which they have advanced their prices to the retailer be. . cause of limo stamp tax , and to carry out the purpose of tlmis resolution the undersigned - signed individually and collectively agree. Time boycott will not be made general until 75 per cent of the retail druggists fa the state agree to refuse to handle such proprietary nod patent medicines on which time price has been raised since the war tax sveut Into effect.
