NEW YORK , July 27.-Nearly all the strength and activity In today's stock roar- ket were coalined to the first hour. At the opening there was a rush to buy as a re- suit of orders placed with commission houses this morning on the announcement that Spain had nt1dresst1 the United States government wIth a request for peace , This earl ) ' demand was ted quito freely by realIzIng - IzIng sales which held irlces back to withIn - In a smni fraction above last nIght and even dragged them below last night's level on active profit tnklng. But these otters to realize were quite confidently and nggres- sively absorbed and time demand will be still Un sflhislIeil , The market was apparently embarked on a sustained upward movement when Sugar hogan to pnnso after an advonce of nearly 2 5)010th , which resulted in dislodging heavy covering orderS.'ery large blocks of the stock , many of them of 1,000 , shares and upwnrds , were taken on tIme advance. flut after touching 141 support seemed to be withdrawn and a steady stream t'ns ioured upon the market for the rest of the day. Several times the price steadied and rallIed slightly , only to make a renewed downward plunge , each successive decline dislodging heavy stop losit orders , The price dropped over 4 poInts from the top and rallied only feebly at the close. The slump was nc- companied by rumors of unloadIng for Inside - side Interests with a view to retirement. Tie demoralizatIon In Sugar Unsettled tIme whole list and put a stop to time up'ard movement for the rest of tIme day. The decline In the general market was desultory nod was not accompanIed by heavy offerIngs. It was very obvious , however - ever , that professional traders realized to a large extent at the opening on the peace news , and they probably viewed with corn- placency the subsequent reaction , offering an opportunity to buy back stocks at a lower level. Declines from tIme best reached a joint or over in most of the promInent stocks and net losses In some cases are as much as a poInt. The announcement during the day of the engagement of a small amount of gold in London for Import had no effect. TIme transaction - action was regarded as of a special character - ter , exchange not yet being considered at tIme gold Import PoInt. Sterling exchange , in fact , rallied per cent in the actual rate today. Conditions in the money market remained unchanged. Railroad bonds continue to be absorbed on a. large scale , recent lsoos of 4 per cent for reorganization purposes being the favorites. Total sales , $5,195,000. There was a continued large demand for new government hs today when issued , very large individual blocks being taken above 104. United States new 4s coupon , nd- vanced 1 per cent ; United tates new 4 , registered , and the old 4s. coupon , pOr cent : the Os , coupon , ! 4 per cent , and the 35 when issued 1-S per cent in the bid price. The Evening l'ost's London ilnanclal Cablegram - blegram sa's : The stock markets here continue stagnant , investment stocks being dull on the rise Ia money rates and the con- tinned foreign drain of gold. At present the gold operations are through Canadian banks , but it is understood that New York is the destination of time metal , SpanIsh 4s rose to 40 on the peace birDs. pects , but closed nearly a point under the best. Gold has been engaged here today for oximort to the tInItod Stnt i.nio tntn , , bo'th from the open market and from the bank. It was the heaviest run of ammy , day so far this month , in fact the heaviest run of any day since Juno 2S. CATTLE-All told there were 137 cars of cattle In thitm yards , but of timat number thmlrty-fotmr l'ere direct to packers. Time total receipts. however , were the largest of any day since July 0. 'rimere were not far from sixty loads of beef on sale , the offerIngs of dry lot cattle beng time largest In a good many days , and there wore ( lUlte a number of good cattle among time offerings. 'rho market as a whole was in very satisfactory slmapo as regards selling interests. Whmlle it was not quite such a hiot market as that of yesterday - day , the trade opened active , with buyers all wanting good cattle. Time offerings changed hands rapidly and at just abottt the same prices as prevailed yesterday. Good cattle soltl at $5.15t1'5.25 , with mnlnish loads at $4.DOl'5.IO. Time less desirable cattle sobS from $4.80 down. A seller summed up the trade in this way : "Time buyers wantel gooj cattle and went after them , but they were In no hurry after the less desirable kinds. " Practically everything clmangcd hands early in the morning. Butchers' stock , such as cows and belfers , sold at good , steady prices and tIme offerings - ings soon chamiged Imaimds. Some dry lot heifers ' sold at $1.50. hulls , stags , etc. , brought' just about steady prices and the market on that kind of stuff was without change. There wore more stockers anti feeders here than for some days past. Among the offerings there was on string of fourteen loads of Oregon cattle , besides quite a spcInklitmg of Nebraskans. Yesterday a few loads of Stock cattle wore shipped out into the country , and , as speculttors have been very light buyers for several days back , time yards were pretty well cleared out. For that reason the demand for stock cattle today , in SPitO of time larger receIpts , seemed to ho better than It has been on a good many days of late and time cattle sold about as well as tlmey would any time this week. The feeling Is stIll weak nni , buyers are cautious. owIng to dry weather. Representative - resentative sales : STEERS. No. Av. Pr. No. As' . Pr. No. A' . ' .
