NEW TOILK , July 2G.-A concatenation
of causes was responsible for the awakening
of the stock market today from the ieth-
argy that has held it for nearly two montht.
The bears hind their Innings early in the
day , assisted by a lower range of prices for
Americans from I.ondon , Later , Northwestern -
western anti its subsidiary road-Omaha-
had a rally and from them the movement
lroadenel and strengthened all through time
railroad list , Strength was also radiated
from it group of bituminous coal roads , in-
clutling Norfolk & Western preferred , Clii-
( 'ago IndIanapolis & Louisville preferred ,
lialtfmoro tc Ohio and \Vheehing and Lake
Erie preferred , The movement in these
stocks served to make rather conspicuous
time quietude of other soft Coal tock which
hIM'S been assigned an importammt place in
the pending Plan for amalgamation of tIme
soft coal Interests.
The activity and strength In Sugar was
also a dominating influence in the market ,
nccomnpanied though It was by all sorts of
sensational rumors and very obviously
manipulated to squeeze the shorts , l'eace
rumors syore renewed in the later ilcalltigs
and the nmmnotmncment of the successtu1
landing of the United States forces itt l'orto
Rico also added to the buoyant tendency of
trailing. But the mOst potent element in
the situation was the growing certainty
that abundance of mone' would continue at
the command of the bitsiness of this cotta-
try. Sterling exchange fell 3c from tIme
posted rates. Demand sterling at $ IS1 % in
within .8c of time level at which recent im-
Iiortntmt gold importations imave been auntIe.
Time trenstmry has received about * 18,000,000
from the bomb Issue , which incitides tile
subscriptions for $500 or less without at-
feeling tile money market ,
The Pa3'inemut of the rest of the subscrip-
thin installments vili be offset by the disbursements -
bursements on war accoumit , thus assuring
the money market against future disturb-
ances. Call money fell to 1 bier cent today.
'rho surplus of Itilo money was very evidemit
in tIme liotitl mnarket , seeking all issues except -
copt the class of gilt-edgqd bonds which
have risen to practically prohibitive Pric's ,
Total sales , $1,305,000. UnIted States old 4s ,
registered , advanced 3 per cent and time
new 3s ( u'hen issued ) declined 1-S tier cent
in the bid lirice.
Time Evening 1'ost' London financial ca-
bbegram says : "The stock markets lucre
continued llfeles today , the stagnation be-
hug Increased by the ( loodwood races. The
settlement shows a good account and is
favored by easy money. Contnuugocs on
Americans were About 2,4 er cent. Thu
general tone of Americans was good , but
investmemit Stocks were hewer on indications -
tions of Possible dearer money. The market -
ket were quiet , but time close was dodd-
edly firm on Now York support. The die-
count market is rising on the fall of Amen-
can exchange. The question of gold experts -
ports to New York is freely discussed , some
People aflbrmlng that gold may go muext
month. Such taik , imowever , is premature. "

ISO two weeks ago and 1117 three weeks ago ,
in other words , the receipts of stock today
Yore very iigllt for the second day of the
week , due to time heavy decrease In cattle
arrivals.
CATTLE-All told , there were ninety-two
cars of cattio reported in the yards , bqt of
that number there were stxtcen cars , which
were consigned direct to a pucker , so that
the actual offerings on the niarket were
'cry small for it ' .k'uesday. it was , in fact
the smallest run of cattie for this tinie Ok
the week in a number of months.
Among the citerings vere several loads of
right good dry lot steers , and quite a num-
her of loads that were not so good. The
bUyers seemed to be vcr' hungry for corn-
fed cattle , and thetrade developed Into a
rsd-hot market on that kind of stuff. The
buyers all went after thic cattle , and they
got them , evemi though they had to put on
56310c. Several bunches of cattle brought
$ S.00635.21 and tile more common and an-
Itnisned cattle $4.6O4.75. Yesterday's adVance -
Vance in railroad rates between lucre and
Chicago was entirely lost sight of , and
buyers took the cattle without any regard
to what It might aoat to ran loom on.
There was nat much here in the way of
grass cattle that was good enough for
beef , but the market on that kind of stut'r
could bo quoted steady.
Good , dry lot cows fluId ileIfet'S were in
active demand and the market was strong.
Some helfers sold at $4.60. Grass cows were

iluils , stags , etc. , were unchanged.
The feeder market was lower and the
emily thing that prevented a decided break
In values was tile fact that there vere
omuly a few on sale. Tue feeling among
bimyers , however , was evidently 'ory weak.
The country demand yesterday was prac-
ticahly nothing , only twelve head selling
out of speculators' hands , and they went
to 1)ieCe Out a load. The continued dry
weather is the dhturbing influence , and so
long 1(13 that continues , over such a. wide.
section of the state , every one is inclined
to keep very close to stuors. Representative
